Philippines – Luzon, Leyte,
Mindanao
Epiphyte that grows in
forests over 1000m
Potted in small bark under
50% shade. Watered three
times a week in summer and
once a fortnight in winter.
Fertilized three weeks with
high nitrogen and one week
of low nitrogen in summer
and nil in winter.

Bulbophyllum propinquum
Dendrobium lichenastrum
Endemic to North East
Queensland – Cairns to
Mackay Epiphyte, lithophyte;
found in rainforests and
humid situations in open
forests; usually above
500m. It prefers dappled
sunlight but will grow in
full sun. Will form huge
colonies.
Grown on cork or
Callistemon in bush house.
Watered daily in summer
and less in winter.
Fertilised with low
nitrogen in summer.

Left - Dendrochilum glumaceum
Dockrillia rigida
Cape York to Russel River. Also
Papua New Guinea.
Epiphyte. Grows on a range of
trees but each species must have
rough bark. Variety of humid
habitats –mangroves, coastal
rainforests, paperbark swamps,
along streams
Cultivation: On slab/bark, good
air, watered copiously in summer,
much less in winter, fertilized
with low nitrogen weekly in
summer, nil in winter, under 50%
shade.

Left - Bulbophyllum trigonosepalum
Bulbophyllum schillerianum
North East Queensland to
Central New South Wales –
Cooktown to Newcastle.
Pendulous epiphyte; grows
on a variety of trees along
streams and watercourses,
near swamps. Likes a moist,
humid, airy habitat. Prefers
a shady site.
Easy to grow on cork or
Callistemon. Water well in
summer and sparingly in
winter. Fertilize with low
nitrogen during warmer
weather. Grown in bush
house in a shady location.
Epidendrum imatophyllum
Widespread from Mexico to
Peru and Brazil, also in
Trinidad
Grows as an erect terrestrial
herb. This lowland species
is associated with ants and
their nests and the ant nests
provide high nitrogen to the
plant.
Cultivation: Warm
conditions with high
nitrogen fertilizer and plenty
of water in the summer and
less in the winter. Good
drainage is preferred.
Cleisostoma simondii
Ascocentrum miniatum
Cattleya forbesii var. aurea
Brazil
Epiphyte mostly; Swampy
coastal areas. In forested
areas it is found along rivers
and streams.
Culture: Warm conditions,
medium bark, god air
movement, water three
times a week in summer and
once weekly in winter.
Fertilize three weeks with
high nitrogen and one week
low nitrogen. Under 50%
shade.
Phalaenopsis rosenstromii
North-east Queensland –
Iron Range to Mount Spec.
Grows in humid places
where there is good air
circulation – near waterfalls,
moist gullies, deep gorges
and sheltered slopes.
Needs warmth, humidity
and good air movement.
Grown over a tray of moist
coconut husk, watered three
times a week in summer and
once a week in winter.
Fertilized with low nitrogen
fertilizer.
Pelatantheria insectifera
North west Himalaya, the
Deccan, North East India,
Nepal, Myanmar
Epiphyte to an altitude of
1000m; grows in broad
leafed evergreen forests on
limestone rocks and bushes
Grown on a mount and hung
high in the orchid house
under 50% shade Watered
daily in summer and much
less in winter. Low nitrogen
fertilizer.
