Selected Antibody for Influenza Virus Influenza A viruses belong to the family Orfhomyxoviridae and have a segmented single-strand negative sense RNA genome (1). They represent one of the three types of influenza virus that infect humans, the other two being Band C. While influenza C is less common and generally milder clinically, influenza B viruses are increasingly being recognized as major contributors to the burden of influenza worldwide (2). Nevertheless, more of the research community's effort has been directed at influenza A, in part because these viruses are capable of causing potentially catastrophic pandemics through both mutation (antigenic drift) and genomic shuffling (antigenic shift). Data suggests that only two subtypes of influenza A have been co-circulating recently. However, there are presently 17 recognized subtypes of influenza A (lurking in animals), in contrast to only two identified lineages of influenza B. These subtypes are based on the hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein, a trimeric molecule situated on the viral surface that binds to sialic acid residues on the host cell and mediates viral entry (3). HA is the primary consideration of influenza vaccine developers who strive to anticipate what form of influenza A will be the next year's primary threat. Selected Antibody for Influenza Virus
