    The Des Moines Bomb Squad uses this vehicle as an

    "incident command post and a tool box." It replaces several

    small vehicles and trailers. Serves DSM and Region 1. They

    use it for 90-100 calls a year.

    These were split up between hospital, EMS and fire.

    "Thankfully, we have not used them."

    Johnson County (Region 6) Thermal imaging camera 1 10,857$ 10,857$ 2002

    Coralville, Iowa City, North Liberty and Solon all have one of

    these older models, which allow you to detect heat or cold.

    Can be used to find people stuck in burning building or find

    someone in a field. Can even find footprints if recently

    made. Have newer models now that allow you to take

    photos.

    Johnson County Incident command radio interface 2 9,999$ 19,999$ 2003

    Johnson County has four of these, used by Coralville Police,

    ICPD, Johnson County EMS and Iowa City Fire. They were

    used every day in early years to help Johnson County

    agencies communicate with each other. Rarely needed now

    that they have Joint Communications. But would be helpful

    if they went to help out in another part of the state.

    Explosives dog, Aro, went to University of Iowa Police.

    Handler was JT Egli. The dog did not have a long service life

    because of health problems for dog and handler. Retired in

    2008. Use these to sweep Kinnick before each home game,

    among other calls for service.

    Never deployed. Johnson County keeps this in Haz-Mattruck. Would be most useful for biological event, such as

    leak/spill at State Hygienics Lab in Coralvile. \ The suit will

    degrade and need to be replaced.

    This went to Solon, but Swisher and Oxford also have

    Homeland Security-funded Rangers. Used on a regular basis

    for search and rescue, medical evacuation and community

    events like RAGBRAI.

    Linn Urban Search & Rescue (Regio PV environmental gas chromatograph 1 21,204$ 21,204$ 2002

    Never deployed. Linn County Public Health Dept. purchased

    this chromatograph, which is used to separate components

    of a mixture.

    Linn USAR 20' pull-behind trailer for equipment sensitive to temp and humidity 1 24,656$ 24,656$ 2003

    Communications hub for Urban Search and Rescue (USAR)

    team, hosted by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. Take it

    out for calls 3-4 times a year. Stored at rented warehouse,

    separate from CRFD.

    Used for carrying all equipment. "It's like a beefed-up

    Rubbermaid." Still use these, have bought more since.

    Linn USAR Listening device 1 11,482$ 11,482$ 2003

    Never deployed. Delsar seismic listening device used by

    USAR. Technology developed by mining industry to find

    people who are buried. Was taken to Parkersburg, but not

    needed.

    Never deployed. Cutters, spreaders, lifting tools. "Jaws of

    Life." This is a set separate from fire department to be used

    by USAR. Taken to Parkersburg after tornado, but not used.

    Plymouth County (Region 3) 2006 Ford F250 4x4 1 21,319$ 21,319$ 2005

    Used by Plymouth County EMS for hauling trailers,

    generators, lights, as well as transporting people in blizzards

    and floods.

    Decatur County (Region 4) Confined Space Rescue (CSR) Kit 75'. 1 3,560$ 3,560$ 2005

    Never deployed. Put a team together and did training, but

    the group fell apart. "The training money dried up and a

    bunch of guys moved away." County has considered trying

    to resurrect the group, but unlikely can recruit enoughpeople. May sell the gear to Indian Hills Community College.

    State -- ISU Alpha gamma spectrometer 1 80,660$ 80,660$ 2003

    Never deployed. ISU Environmental Health and Sciences

    department bought an alpha spec system and a gamma spec

    system as a back-up to State Hygienic Lab in Coralville. The

    systems are used to identify radioactive material.

    Polk/DMPD (Region 1) Remotec EOD robot for explosive device mitigation Andros F6A 1 154,041$ 154,041$ 2004

    Original robot has recently been upgraded. One of two

    robots for DMPD. Robot deployed in 45-50 calls a year.

    State -- DOT Hand-held explosive detection system 4 19,200$ 76,800$ 2003

    Discontinued use. The Iowa DOT's Office of Motor Vehicle

    Enforcement, which is responsible for inspection of

    commercial motor vehicles, including those carrying

    hazardous materials, utilized them to take vapor/air samples

    from inside semi-trailers and truck cabs to check for traces

    of explosive materials. In addition, the equipment was used

    to test particulate samples taken by swiping suspected

    objects with cotton gloves. The Iowa DOT did not find any

    nonmanifested explosives material during its tests. The Iowa

    DOT has discontinued use of the equipment. While portable

    and sensitive, were not as accurate as expected and couldnot be calibrated correctly over time.

    Webster County (Region 1)

    InVise Live Station scans fingerprints for comparison with state and federal

    databases. Price includes set up and first year of maintenance 1 20,025$ 20,205$ 2003

    Obsolete. Replaced ink fingerprinting post 9/11. But then

    DCI got a grant to buy more advanced scanners for larger

    Iowa counties, including Webster. The newer scanner can

    transmit the prints directly to DCI. The old one is obsolete,

    except for a field situation.

    Winneshiek County (Region 2) Bomb-suppression blanket, Second Chance brand 60"x60" 1 2,479$ 2,479$ 2003

    Never deployed. Decorah Police Department keeps this

    blanket in the special response vehicle. Has been taken to

    scene of bomb scares, but never used to suppress an

    explosive device.

    refrigerator.

    Dissecting Microscope with Digital Camera for on-site detection of trace

    evidence for explosives in deceased bodies 1 6,886$ 6,886$ 2004

    The State Hygienic Lab has this microscope, which comes

    with a table. Item found after contacting Homeland Security,

    Department of Administrative Services, Iowa National

    Guard, State Medical Examiner, and Hygienic Lab. State

    reported 9/2 that the equipment is used regularly.

    This item was inaccurately recorded as a video camera. The

    Des Moines Bomb Squad used this money to buy eight

    bomb suits.

    Delaware County (Region 6) Decontamination showers 9 477$ 4,293$ 2002

    County fire departments got these for use at chemical spills,

    meth labs. Manchester Fire Department required a couple

    of meth lab suspects to shower off before they were taken

    to the hospital because the ambulance would not allow

    them to ride otherwise.

    Crawford County (Region 3) Zumro Shelter System 1 20,602$ 20,602$ 2004

    Crawford County has used this decontamination tent once,

    for a hazardous materials incident inHarrison County. Tent is

    available to any Iowa jurisdiction with mutual aid

    agreements.
