Bronze Tilt-Top StandNew York, Early 20th CenturyA Tiffany & Co. bronze tilt-top stand, circular top relief decorated with signs and symbols of the zodiac, raised on three legs with detailed claw feet, three dragon heads at base with spiral spindle; impressed maker’s mark: Tiffany & Co

Tilt-top tables are created to fold down so that they can take up little space when put away. Because the table top folds to display vertically, makers began to create ornate designs, like Tiffany’s “Zodiac” pattern, on these table tops. Tiffany produced the Zodiac pattern for more than thirty years, during which its design varied and was more commonly used to decorate desk items like paper racks and inkwells. Sobel was born in Poland and attended the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland. She studied among fellow Abstract Constructivists like Wladyslaw Steminski and Stefan Wegner. Sobel then moved to Israel where there was an emerging art scene, and was exhibited in galleries and museums including the Museum of Modern Art at Haifa. In 1956, Sobel moved to New York where she again exhib-ited in major galleries and institutions, including The Jewish Museum, where she was one of the first two women to be featured in a two-person exhibition. John Lear (American, 1910- 2008) is known for his watercolor works depicting country life, military and industrial scenes. The artist was drafted into the United States Army, and painted this series of six watercolor paintings in 1941 while he was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. These paintings were exhibited in the Military Art Shows in Washing-ton, DC, and Chicago in 1942-43.

Matsumi Kanemitsu (American, b. 1922)Set of 5 Untitled Works, Circa 1940sLot of 5 works, comprising three watercolors, an ink drawing, and an oil on canvas. The three watercolors are inscribed “MK” in bottom right corner and are unframed. The ink drawing is inscribed “MK” in lower left corner and is unframed. The oil painting of a horse is unsigned and unframed.

Matsumi Kanemitsu was born in Ohio in 1922 to Japanese parents. In 1925, his parents sent him to a suburb of Hiroshima, Japan, but he returned to the United States in 1940 and enlisted in the Army in 1941. After Pearl Harbor, he was sent to internment camps where he devoted his time to art with materials provided by the American Red Cross. After the war ended, Kanemitsu studied with Fernand Leger in Paris before returning to New York and working amongst abstract painters like Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Willem de Kooning. Kanemitsu eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in a variety of media, from Japanese ink drawings to painting on canvas. The works on offer represent three of Kanemitsu’s mastered techniques, including three watercolors, an ink drawing, and an oil on canvas. Two watercolors depict serene suburban landscapes, while the other depicts a man seated on a couch, pensively looking downward. The oil on canvas shows a horse bounding forward on a swirled ground to heighten the sense of motion. The final piece is an ink drawing of two figures, a man and a woman, and displays the influence of Japanese culture in Kanemitsu’s work. Larry Rivers (American, 1923 - 2002)Washington Calling, Circa 1960sMixed media on paper, matted and framed in plexiglass. Signed “Rivers” middle right side, titled “Washington Calling” and numbered “4834” on the reverse, oil stick and adhesive tape on paper. Frame 18 1/2” x 16 1/2”.

Rivers was born to Ukranian Jewish parents in 1923 in the Bronx. His given name was Yitzak Loiza Grossberg, but after his musical group was introduced at a jazz club as “Larry Rivers and the Mudcats,” he adopted this name instead. Later in life, he met artist Jane Freilicher and began to devote his life to painting. Rivers exhibited at the Marlborough Gallery, and his work is in the collections of major institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum. Rivers’ work often had a political, historical, or sexual aspect, and included controversial or shocking subjects. This multimedia piece represents his political and historical interests through his depiction of Napoleon on French bank notes. American Folk Art Portrait of Mother and Child, Late 18th CenturyPossibly Ralph Earl (American, 1751-1801)

Oil on canvas.

Several factors including the style of the painting, the age of the canvas and the attire and grooming of the subjects have led to an attribution of this work to an American artist, possibly painted in the mid Atlantic region in the late 18th century sometime around the founding of the United States of America. Normally unsigned portraits by American artists of that day were not nearly as fine as this image.

The affluent appearance of the subjects coupled with the fine quality of this painting indicate a hand more gifted and skilled than that of the normal itinerant artist. The monogram on the mother’s bracelet has not been researched. American portraitists of the 17th to early 18th centuries were working in the style of English portraiture. Portraits from this period were often painted in a styl-ized, two dimensional manner to idealize the subject, and objects within the portrait, like jewelry and clothing, were markers of the sitters’ wealth. In this portrait, the woman’s wealth is displayed through her clothing embellished in lace and jewelry, including a monogramed bracelet. Both the woman and child have stylized and idealized faces that are almost expressionless. They woman sits on a lavishly upholstered chair, and the inclusion of flowers could have been used to indicate youth and beauty. Source: Folk Art Museum, New York, N.Y., “Early Portraits.”

Edward Cucuel (American, 1875-1954)Woman in a Blue Dress, first half of 20th CenturyOil on canvas, signed lower left, depicting a woman in a blue dress sitting at a table outside, near the edge of the water, with gilt wood frame.

Edward Cucuel was born in San Francisco in 1875. Cucuel began his studies at age 14 at a local design school and then studied at the Academie Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Cucuel moved between Paris and New York before settling in Munich until the beginning of World War II. He developed his Impressionist style in Germany. This painting is a beautiful example of the artist’s best known subjects, namely woman in sun-soaked landscapes. Cucuel depicts the woman here looking serene and blissful, encompassed by the lavish landscape around her. Allen Stringfellow (American, 1924-2004)“On This Street I”, 1999Collage on board, signed lower right and dated 1999. Framed and bearing a label from Essie Green Galleries, New York.

Allen Stringfellow was born in Illinois in 1923. While his mother and father were a jazz musician and nightclub manager, he was raised by his religious grandmother. Much of his art depicts either religious or jazz themes that reflect his upbringing. Stringfellow attended the Art Institute in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his works have been exhibited in galleries and museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago. This collage is an excellent representation of Stringfellow’s influences, with the “Mt. Tom Lovell (American, 1909-1997)Bulldog and Puppies, 20th CenturyOil on canvas, signed lower right, possibly a commission by Mack Truck for their famous Bulldog logo.

This painting is displays Lovell’s talent for realistically depicting animals. Better known for his Western scenes, Tom Lovell was famous for his illustrations for magazines like Life, The Saturaday Evening Post, and National Geographic. Due to the intense precision in his work, he seldom completed more than twelve oil paintings in a year. Lovell was the first artist to win the Prix de West, the National Academy of Western Art’s highest honor, twice. George Nakashima (Japanese/American, 1905-1990)Walnut Spindle Back Bench, Early 1950sWood. With a straight top rail over 19 spindles and a slab seat.

George Nakashima was a woodworker, furniture maker, architect, and a major figure in 20th century design. Nakashima stud-ied architecture at the University of Washington and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then worked for the Czech architect Antonin Raymond’s firm in Japan. Raymond brought Nakashima to his farm outside New Hope, Pennsylvania in 1943, after sponsoring Nakashima’s release from a wartime internment camp for Americans of Japanese ancestry. In 1945 Nakashima purchased a plot of land in New Hope, where he built his home, as well as a furniture factory. Nakashima designed every piece of furniture his firm produced. Dale ChihulyA Unique ‘Flame’ Blown Glass & Steel Chandelier, 1997Designed by Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) and produced by Chihuly Studio, Seattle, WA, 1997. Red and Gold Chandelier, made of blown glass and forged steel and comprised of 11 Venetian style glass elements. Weighs approximately 250 lbs. Originally commissioned in 1997 by Wall Street investor Michael Palm.

Please note: The winning bidder will be required to have the work installed by an authorized Chihuly studio agent. This glass “chandelier” is unquestionably a work of fine art with its deep red hue and intricate designs. Chihuly embellished each facet of the chandelier with floral details that create an enchanting and organic composition.

The work was a custom commission and is one of very few “chandeliers” to be offered at auction.

“One of very few chandeliers offered at auction”. “Chihuly was born in Tacoma, W.A., in 1941. He enrolled in the first glass program in the country at the University of Wisconsin, and continued at Rhode Island School of Design where he founded and instructed a glass program. Chihuly has received a Fulbright Fellowship, twelve honorary doctorates, and two fellowships from the National En-dowment for the Arts. He has worked in Venice at the Venini glass factory, and co-founded the Glass School in Washington State. Chiuhuly paved the way in glass developments, establishing it as a medium of fine art.
