CLOUD ENABLED ENTERPRISE
It’s a big big data world out there
We live in an increasingly information-centric world. Analyst firm IDC predicts that between 2005 and 2020, the digital universe will grow from 130 exabytes to 44,000 exabytes.1 That’s big data.
Gartner defines big data as encompassing the
“Three Vs”:2
Volume: It’s big. For example, an
exabyte is one billion gigabytes, or
1,000 petabytes. Exabytes are very
big—just five exabytes would store all
the words ever spoken by humankind
across all languages.3
Velocity: It’s fast. We’re seeing 500
million tweets a day roll across our
screens. More than 72 hours of video
are upgraded every minute on YouTube.
Variety: There’s a lot of different
data being generated—both structured
and unstructured. This includes
application logs, machine-generated
logs, text files, photos, and videos.

In the face of all this data, businesses need
their enterprise networks to do more. Users
are accessing the network utilizing multiple
devices, employing cloud-based applications,
and uploading more content. Who has the
patience to wait more than a second for
websites to load?
Every extra second of page load time costs Amazon $1.6 billion in annual sales.4
A quarter-of-a-second page load slowdown costs Google eight million searches per day. This delay translates into millions fewer online advertisements served.5
You need to invest in technology that
allows your enterprise network to grow
and adapt along with the ever-evolving—
and escalating—demands of employees,
customers, and partners.

What’s driving big data?
First, mobile data is exploding.
More smartphones, faster
networks, and the growing
popularity of video will cause an
exponential increase in wireless
data consumption by 2021.
Within five years each North American will consume 22GB of data per month on average, primarily on smartphones, a significant rise from the 3.7GB/month average recorded in 2015.6
Second, don’t forget the data being generated by
the Internet of Things (IoT). With the billions of
devices connected to the Internet, your network
needs to be more robust.
Gartner predicts that the market for Internet of Things devices will approach 21 billion connected devices by 2020, up 30% from 2015.7 8

8 http://go.juniper.net/assets/pdfs/Demand/3510595-001-EN.pdf
The need for a secure and high-performing
enterprise network isn’t driven solely by more
devices. You also need to support all of the
subsequent challenges that come with an
increase in mobile device usage. That includes
increasing cloud application adoption,
unpredictable spikes in data traffic, and more.
Managing a growing number of switches
means greater complexity, especially if those
operations are manual.
Performing extensive manual configurations on demand exposes your network to human error, which accounts for as much as 35% of downtime.8

Big data challenges the network
Connectivity. Bandwidth. Latency. Security. A high-performing network is needed now more than ever in the big data world.
According to IDG’s 2016 State of the Network
study, nearly half of businesses (47 percent)
say they sometimes invest in new applications,
services, or technologies only to find out that
their networks don’t have the bandwidth to
support them.9
Today’s employees rely on real-time access to
information to react skillfully to changing business
conditions—or competitors. Customers want split-
second reaction times. Partners want assurances
of security. All these things are dependent on a
robust enterprise network.
As cloud-based applications continue to
proliferate, the enterprise network becomes even
more critical. This is especially true for employees.
Without seamless network connectivity, employee
productivity can drop, impacting the business’s
ability to function properly.
Further challenging the modern enterprise
network is social business, particularly
collaboration that depends on voice, video,
and multimedia applications.

With high requirements around bandwidth
and absolutely no tolerance for latency and
jitter, today’s enterprises can’t compromise on
their networks’ ability to support collaboration
and multimedia.

Three steps to transforming your enterprise campus and branch network
So how do you transform your enterprise campus and branch network to keep up with the big data explosion? Take these three steps.
ANTICIPATE YOUR REQUIREMENTS
You need an open, scalable infrastructure capable
of accommodating your increasing volumes of
data. This means a network that can flexibly scale
and optimize performance while reducing costs.
Juniper Networks® EX Series Ethernet Switches
provide all that. Juniper’s EX Series is designed
for converged enterprise branch offices, campuses,
and data centers, as well as service provider
deployments. They address escalating demands for
high availability, unified communications, mobility,
and virtualization within enterprise networks.

Additionally, automation can help you accelerate
and simplify deployments to multiple locations,
keeping you ahead of the game. With Juniper
Networks Junos® Fusion technology, network
administrators can reduce network complexity
and operational expenses by collapsing underlying
network elements into a single, logical point
of management.
And getting a single-pane-of-glass view to your
network operations allows you to leverage data
to optimize performance, no matter how fast or
how big your network grows. With Junos® Space
Network Director, you can visualize, analyze,
and control the entire enterprise network—data
center and campus, physical and virtual, wired and
wireless—through a single pane of glass.

TAKE OWNERSHIP
You also need to take control of your network
infrastructure from a security perspective.
This security must be both fast and intelligent.
Juniper’s Software-Defined Secure Networks
(SDSN) platform addresses this need with an
open and unified architecture and by extending
security enforcement across the entire network—
down to the switch level.
To achieve this, you first need to implement a
single interface for configuring and managing all
aspects of your network. You can do this with
Junos® Space Security Director.
Then, as a centralized management platform,
Junos Space Security Director allows you to
manage both physical and virtual firewalls
supporting physical, virtual, and hybrid datacenter
infrastructure architectures, and allows you to
create secure networks with a consistent policy
engine, viewed from a single pane of glass.

You can’t just go with the status quo. Today’s
network professionals must be champions of
innovation in this era of big data. They must deliver
anytime, anywhere secure access to data from
the cloud and offer a choice of best-of-breed
services when integrating with leading third-party
technologies—all while strengthening the roadmap
with clear ROI justification.
And, perhaps more importantly, you need to
automate tasks to enable IT professionals to cut
back on basic, repetitive functions and focus on
strategic initiatives. Increasingly, such initiatives
take place not just within IT, but within business
units where digital transformation is essential for
thriving in today’s rapidly changing markets.
Junos Fusion enterprise addresses the need for
simplified campus networks. Based on Juniper’s
innovative fabric architecture, Junos Fusion
Enterprise treats the enterprise campus network
