PREFAZIONE

Susanna Bertuccioli

I am very pleased as well as flattered to present this second volume of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas in the version for solo harp that has been selected, re-vised and meticulously transcribed by Fabrizio Ai-ello. The varied and inimitable universe of Scarlat-ti's genius harpsichord music is, without a doubt, also well represented in these six new sonatas. In this volume, Aiello makes an appropriate selection in order to obtain various levels of technical diffi-culty and leave a greater freedom of fingerings to future interpreters, giving them the opportunity to make wise personal choices. Positive of a favorable reception of this work by the public and critics, I extend my praise to the author for this commendable initiative, which contributes significantly to enhancing the beauty and tradition of an admirable instrument such as the Harp.

Following the enormous success achieved with Otto Sonate, I decided to complement my work of selec-tion, revision and transcription for harp by adding six more harpsicord sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. I am, therefore, delighted to present these Sei Sonate, which embrace different levels of difficulty in order to address a wider circle of harpists. As compared to my previous collection, in this vol-ume I decided to allow the performer to have more freedom in relation to their choice of fingering pat-tern (which we know being strictly personal) and only intervened where I thought a further adjust-ment was needed. The sonatas I selected for this volume (K. 75, K. 111, K. 291, K. 336, K. 391 and K. 424) are all new among the transcriptions for harp of Scarlatti’s music repertoire. As regards my selection, apart from exceptional cases rarely did I adjust the orig-inal score. The only adjustments I made consisted in simplifying those small fragments which pose technical obstacles to the performer. Here are the adjustments I made for this volume: Sonata K. 75 – m. 18: I eliminated C# from the first chord; – m. 23: I substituted F♮ with E# in order to avoid a noisy and disruptive change of pedal. Sonata K. 111 – m. 10: I eliminated the fifth note (A♮) from the chord. Sonata K. 336 – mm. 31, 36, 41, 46, 89, 94 and 95: I provided a slight adjustment to the movement of the right hand in order to guarantee a more technically ac-complished music performance. Sonata K. 424 – mm. 9, 24, 25, 28, 34, 50, 55, 60, 69, 70, 77 and 83: I shortened the value of some notes in the bass clef, so as to dampen the sound at a precise point of the musical score; – mm. 21, 22, 23, 66, 67 and 68: I simplified some octaves into dampened sounds to guarantee a more technically accomplished music performance.

Concerning mordents and trills, apart from the points where the execution mode is clearly reported, the performer is free to choose between two alterna-tives:

Fabrizio Aiello

Moreover, in some particularly intricate passages I added up an alternative fingering pattern in order to allow the performer to make the most adequate choice. For the fingering of the thumb of the left hand, I reported ‘1’ for a softer and more legato ef-fect, whereas the ‘+’ symbol indicates that the hand palm should rest on the strings so as to dampen the previous sounds. In addition to this, I provided the changes of pedal in case the performer wishes to execute the refrains as well as the starting pedals for each sonata and their metronomic units of reference.
