ABOUT THE COURSESTHE 6ELEMENTS ORTHODONTIC PHILOSOPHY

The 6E Orthodontic Philosophy is a complete set of optimal and universal treatment goals for arches, AP jaw positions, maxilla width, jaw heights, chin prominence, and occlusion. It encompasses a 3D positionally-correct classifi cation system and effi cient and effective “rules” for treating.

The 6E are as follows:Element I: Optimal arch–teeth individually (positions), teeth collectively (arch borders) and supporting tissues (gingiva, alveolar process, basal bone)

Element II: Optimal AP jaw positions

Element III: Optimal maxilla width

Element IV: Optimal jaw heights

Element V: Optimal chin prominence

Element VI: Optimal occlusion

TEACHING METHODS:The course will be taught using PowerPoint presentations coupled with ample hands-on exercises. Roughly 50% of the time will be spent on lectures and 50% on hands-on exercises.

This 3-day course will build upon the information learned in Segment 1. The fi rst two days will cover diagnosis, classifi cation, and rules for treating arches in greater detail than the introductory course. Participants will expand their knowledge through extensive hands-on exercises. Special attention will also be given to diagnosing and treatment planning jaw heights and chin prominence.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:To review the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy and become an expert in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Specifi c Educational Objectives:• Learn to diagnose patients relative to Element IV and V

• Learn effi cient and effective rules for treating arches and jaws

• Learn to differentiate optimal and compromised treatment

• Learn to be an expert on orthodontic appliances

• Learn how to construct palatal expanders

• Learn how to prescribe and form archwires

• Learn how to diagnose and treatment plan jaw heights and chin prominence relative to optimal

This 3-day course will build upon information learned in Segments 1 and 2. Each participant will present in front of the class a 6E diagnosis and treatment plan of one of their own patients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:Each participant will be exposed to a wide variety of patients diagnosed relative to the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy. Each presenter will be critiqued by classmates. Most past participants look back on Segment 3 as their best 6E learning experience.

Specifi c Educational Objectives:• Test your understanding of the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy

• Learn from the presentations of other participants

• If you can say it and show it, you understand it

This 3-day course will build upon information learned in Segments 1-3 . Each participant will learn the 6E method for identifying the etiology of TMD, how to construct and adjust a splint, treat post-splint patients, and pre-and post-surgery procedures.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:Expand on the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy as applied to TMD surgical diagnosis and treatment planning, and learn the “rules” and methods to ensure successful TMD diagnosis, splint therapy, and surgical outcomes.

Specifi c Educational Objectives:• Learn how to identify TMD etiology

• Learn how to construct and use splints

• Learn how to become an expert on articulators

• Learn how to cast mount using the OcclusoFacial Simulator

• Learn how to diagnose a patient needing jaw surgery relative to the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy

• Learn the fundeamentals of becoming a TMD expert

TEACHING METHODS:The course will be taught using PowerPoint presentations coupled with hands-on diagnostic/treatment planning exercises.

DAY 1• TMD diagnosing

• Learn to be an expert about articulators so you can choose the right one for your offi ce

• Learn the fundamentals of becoming a TMD expert

DAY 2• Cast mounting

This 3-day course will build upon information learned in Segments 1-4. The course will be focused on fi nishing treatment, verifying the extent to which the treatment goals (optimal or compromise) were met, retention, and grading treatment results. Element VI (optimal occlusion) will be defi ned along with appropriate concepts and strategies for achieving it. Participants will present the progress records of a patient in treatment that has approximately six months of treatment time remaining. Group discussions will be centered on strategies best suited to fi nish the patient’s treatment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:To learn the importance of taking progress records when there is approximately six months of active treatment remaining.

Specifi c Educational Objectives:• Learn to routinely achieve Element VI (optimal occlusion)

• Learn to make the most of compromise treatment

• Evaluate CR/CO discrepancies, individual tooth positions, and the Three Arch Lines

• Learn when wire forming is needed and how to do it

• Learn the fundementals of becoming an occlusion expert

TEACHING METHODS:The course will consist of each participant presenting at least one diagnosis and treatment plan of one of their own patients. Diagnosis is to be relative to the 6E Philosophy and treatment plan should be based on the 6E rules for treating.

This 3-day course will introduce the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy, which is comprised of scientifi c treatment goals for the teeth and jaws, a positionally-correct classifi cation system, and effi cient and effective “rules” for treating. Special attention will be devoted to diagnosing and treating arches, AP jaw positions and maxilla widths.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:To identify the six areas which orthodontists have diagnostic responsibility, and to learn their components and optimal characteristics. Also, each participant will become an expert in diagnosing and treating arches so that occlusion can be optimal.
