See You in Court

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means

you have been completely defeated already.

- 1 Corinthians 6:7

Can you imagine Christians suing each other in court? It happened in ancient Corinth and it still happens today.

I have a good friend, Hector Reynoso, who is the pastor of a small church in Mercedes, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. It is a poor Latino church made up of working class people.

Six years ago, Hector’s congregation decided to leave the Presbyterian Church (USA) because that denomination was drifting away from the Bible and the authority of scripture. They went to their Presbytery, asking to be graciously dismissed.

Instead, the Presbytery responded by locking them out of their building and seizing all of their funds, furniture and property. The Presbytery threatened to sue them in court if they dared to challenge this action.

Sadly, this has happened all over the country. Many congregations have been sued in court when they attempted to leave the PC(USA). One church in Menlo Park, California had to pay $8 million to retain their property!

It makes me wonder: What are these church offi cials thinking? What Bible are they reading? Which Jesus are they following? Although they may win in court, in the words of the Apostle Paul, they are “completely defeated already.” Instead of showing grace or love, they are bringing disgrace to the name of Jesus Christ.

from?

People: My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and

earth.

Leader: He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you

will not slumber.

People: The LORD watches over you – the LORD is your shade

at your right hand.

Leader: The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

People: The LORD will keep you from all harm – he will watch

over your life.

All: The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both

now and forevermore.

*Hymn Hymn 26

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

WE PRAY

Prayer of Confession Rebecca Waits

Loving and merciful God, when we were still sinners, you sent your

Son to save us. In him, we have received grace that we cannot earn

and do not deserve. By his death on the cross, our debt has been

paid in full. And yet, our own behavior is so ungracious. When people

owe us something, we demand payment. When people cheat us, we

demand justice. When people trespass against us, we take them

to court. If our neighbor takes unfair advantage, we feel anger and

resentment. LORD, forgive us. LORD, have mercy on us. By your

Spirit, change our hard hearts. Point us again to the cross, and teach

us how to be gracious. We pray in the name of the Father, Son and

Holy Spirit, AMEN.

Assurance of Pardon

* Response Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings fl ow

Praise him all creatures here below

Praise him above, Ye heavenly host

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
