THANK YOU! Having the opportunity to age in place means having the support to live with dignity and independence as you age. Never has this become more important as a societal offering. Not only are individuals empowered by the ability to sustain their lifestyles, but the surrounding society is strengthened as well. The St. Clair West area is the perfect example of a thriving neighbourhood that involves our seniors, thereby enriching the social fabric of our city. Because of you, our neighbourhood’s seniors have a caring community that offers supportive housing and engaging programs. We have new equipment that we didn’t have last year. This means we are offering more programs in addition to our existing schedule of activities and services. What results is a warm, inviting home for active, social seniors. As a member of the Bracondale community, take pride in your invaluable contribution which continues to enrich the lives of so many!

NEW PARTITION WALLS FOR OUR RECREATION AREA Our successful application to the Federal Government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program resulted in Bracondale’s receipt of $25,000. The project-specific grant allowed us to install three accordion-style walls in our lower level. We hired Corflex to roll out the partition system which allows us to triple the functionality of our main program space. Such movable wall applications often appear in banquet halls and hotels, allowing large rooms to be divided into smaller areas. In addition to flexible use of space, the walls provide visual and acoustic privacy. For Bracondale House, this means our expansive hall on the lower level can be made into three separate program spaces. Weekly uses of this level include our exercise class, fall prevention class, yoga sessions, choir rehearsals and movie matinees. We also host seasonal performances such as plays, choir recitals and concerts. Occasionally we also have large gatherings to celebrate annual events like our Christmas Party. During these times, we can open up the hall to its maximum dimensions by retracting the foldable walls. So far, the new addition to our lower level has been a welcome one. One of our external revenue streams is leasing this recreation area to groups for social events such as birthdays, anniversaries, church functions and funerals. With this new addition, we are able to offer community members a more flexible area that accommodates varied sizes and needs.

NEW MEDIA PROJECTOR Thanks to our successful fundraising campaign last Spring, we were able to replace our ailing media projector. We use the new projector to show our seniors weekly Hollywood hits in our lower level. Now they can enjoy great films without needing to trek to a cinema. The projector is also regularly used by our staff and Board of Directors for presentations and resident meetings.

In September 2015, we launched an iPad instruction program designed for those with little to no experience with technology. Using grant money from the Ontario Government, we hired ETAG to teach seniors how to use these touchscreen devices.

The six-month program offers instruction to eight seniors per week. The classes focus on how-tos like browsing the internet, recording digital notes, taking selfies and emailing.

Navigating websites and becoming familiar with the internet is unchartered territory for many

seniors. But in recent years there has been a real push from our residents and community members to offer a computer-based program.

It is our hope that seniors find tablets fun and useful as practical life tools. However, they also serve a social benefit. Staying connected with family and friends is critical to mental health. For many seniors, regular interaction with others is limited to phone calls and in-person meetings. Once they become better acquainted with using tablets, however, they can sign them out and use video applications like Skype to converse with people virtually. A

few of our residents and community members are already on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They have been enjoying the benefits of sharing photos, articles and memes.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS SENIORS FEEL AT HOME

HIGHER QUALITY FOODS Our daily meal program provides delicious midday dinners and evening meals for residents and community members. Every year we strive to liven up our menu with new, nutritional entreés. We need your yearly support to help us afford healthy items despite rising food costs. With funding, we can stock our kitchen with whole foods, preservative-free items and foods that are low in sugar and sodium.

STAYING FIT AND ACTIVE We have an array of fitness classes to sustain regular activity in a fun, safe way. Every week, we offer seven classes and three types of exercise. We especially need your support for our popular Gentle Chair Yoga classes, instructed by Betty Ann McKenzie. During the summer we also offer Nintendo Wii Sports and neighbourhood walks to seniors for a fun spin on keeping fit.

Walking the Toronto Challenge as a fundraiser for seniors

Our successful debut campaign with the Toronto Challenge was a blast! This city-wide fundraiser is organized annually by the City of Toronto and allows organizations like ours to raise critical funds from community members and businesses to support our programs. We had 50 walkers on June 14th. During the two months leading up to the event, each walker collected pledges from family and friends. To bolster our efforts, we sent out letters to businesses in the area asking for donations—we collected $1,000. Many of these businesses have supported us for years. Our raffle which featured 24 prizes from 18 local businesses brought in an additional $763.00. We chose the occasion of our Annual Barbecue to draw the lucky raffle prize winners — another great gathering. By the end of the campaign, we exceeded our monetary goal of $6,000 by almost 40 percent, bringing in a total of $8,347.70.
