BIOGRAPHY

Charles Currier Beale (1864-1909), stenographer, publisher, educator

and shorthand collector.

Beale was born in Boston May 3, 1864 and died in Melrose, Massachussetts.

Beale studied Andrew Jackson Graham' Handbook, a variation of Pitmans'

shorthand. ~eales' business interests included the Beale Shorthand Bureau

and School of Phonography which he founded and operated In Boston between

1884-1908.

An avid collector of shorthand manuscripts and printed material, Beale

amassed a large collection which was donated to the New York Public Library

by the National Shorthand RSporters Association in 1913.

DESCRIPTION

The collection covering the years 1640-1910, emphasizes the subjects of

American and English shorthand systems and also manuscripts written in

shorthand.

Theology is represented by Bibles on both~the Old and New Testaments, sermons

and the Book of Common Prayer, spanning the 18th and 19th century. To a

lesser extent, the subjects bibliography and court trials are represented

in shorthand.
