“Securing Our Future” with David Horovitz

AIPAC (The American

Israel Public Affairs Commit-tee), America’s Pro-Israel lobby, is bringing David Horovitz, found-ing editor of the online newspaper

The Times of Israel, to Washington, D.C. for a community briefing at Washington Hebrew Congregation on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:30 pm. Mr. Horovitz will present an insider’s analysis of the existential issues affect-ing Israel and the United States.

Until 2011, Mr. Horovitz was editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post, Israel’s English-language daily newspa-per. In his almost seven years as editor, he moved The Jerusalem Post to the heart of the Israeli-Diaspora discourse and helped build jpost.com into the world’s most read English-language Jewish news website.

Through his writing and lectures, Mr. Horovitz promotes intra-Jewish tolerance and urges Israeli leader-ship to devote more attention to the struggle for Israeli legitimacy on the

“second battlefield” — the media, the legal arena, and diplomatic forums.

Also the author of two books, he lectures in Israel, the United States, and Europe on Israeli current affairs, and regularly gives the introductory briefing on Israel to Congressional delegations brought to Israel under the auspices of AIPAC.

WHC Books to Discuss A Tale of Love and Darkness

WHC Books will discuss A Tale of Love and Darkness, a memoir by bestselling and award-winning author Amos Oz, at Temple on Tuesday, March 10 at

7:00 pm. Winner of the National Jew-ish Book Award and the Goethe Prize, this “social history embedded within an autobiography” is translated by Nicho-las de Lange in a way “that preserves the author’s gorgeous, discursive style and his love of wordplay” (New York Magazine). Oz tells of Jerusalem in the 1940s when it was under British rule — a city full of people with various ideologies who were either refugees or survivors of the Holocaust.

Amos Oz was an only child whose

parents, émigrés from Eastern Europe, had vastly different personalities: his mother was dreamy and a gifted story-teller who suffered from depression; his father, a brilliant and analytical multi-lingual scholar, who never achieved the life in academia for which he longed. They lived in a small apartment filled with books written in a dozen different languages.

At the age of 14, he moved to a kibbutz, changed his surname from Klausner to Oz (meaning strength), completed his education, and pursued a career as a writer. A Tale of Love and Darkness is a trip down memory lane that incorporates with the mention of significant Israeli writers, politicians, and philosophers.

Borrow a copy of this bestselling book from the WHC library by con-tacting Ellen Share, 301-354-3212 or [email protected], or purchase on Amazon through the WHC Mitzvah Mall, whcmitzvahmall.org.

Teens: Discover the Lost Art of Face-to-Face Communication

We are excited to offer 9th – 12th graders a unique opportunity to work with Carey Kane, founder of Improv Yourself Com-munications, to learn how to communicate confidently in groups and interpersonally, think on their feet, and actively listen. Over two days, beginning with Shabbat on Friday, February 27 and continuing on Saturday morning, introverts will be drawn out and extroverts will learn to finesse their natural styles.

Space is limited and participants must attend both Friday and Saturday. The cost is $150 for WHC members and $200 for non-members. Register online, whctemple.org/teen_improv. Contact Ira Miller, 301-354-3209 or [email protected] for more information.

Discuss The Boston Girl with Rabbi Shankman

We invite you to join Rabbi Shankman and the Sisterhood Literary Group on Friday, February 20 at 10:00 am at JBSC to discuss Anita Diamant’s new novel, The Boston Girl.

From this New York Times bestsell-ing author (The Red Tent and Day After Night), comes an unforgettable novel about family ties and values, friend-ship, and feminism. Addie Baum is “the Boston girl,” born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unpre-pared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End, Addie’s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine — a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women. Reading this book conjures up feelings of lazing away a winter afternoon with a beloved aging relative as you page through a treasured family scrapbook, discovering stories you never knew existed.

The Literary Group is open to all Temple members. For more informa-tion or to RSVP, please contact Janice Burne, [email protected] or 240-401-8849.

Make Your Voice Heard: Vote in the 2015 World Zionist Congress Election

You have an important — and real — opportunity to make your voice as a Reform Jew heard by voting for the ARZA slate of delegates (which includes our own Rabbi Susan Shankman) in the 2015 World Zionist Congress election. By casting your vote for

the ARZA – Representing Reform Judaism slate to fill those 145 seats, you are voting to promote the egalitarian, pluralistic, peaceful vision of Judaism in Israel:

Women’s Rights & Gender Equality: We strive to create a world in which gender equality is the rule — where men and women can pray, work, and live together as equals deserving of the same respect and honor.Religious Equality: We envision and work for a society in which all denominations are treated fairly and with respect — and all of us are seen as Jews, regardless of our level of observance.Peace: Lasting peace, security, and stability for Israel, the Palestinians, and the surrounding Middle East region is possible through a commitment to a two-state solution. Although the road may seem long, we are building the path to that peace every day.

You are eligible to vote at reformjews4israel.org/vote if you: 1. are Jewish,2. will be 18 years or older by June 2015,3. are a resident of the United States, and 4. pay the $10 ($5 for those under age 30) American Zionist Movement

election registration fee.Not eligible to vote? You can still help. Spread the word to family and friends

to ensure that all Reform and progressive Jews in your personal networks vote ARZA – Representing Reform Judaism.

The American Zionist Movement’s (AZM) election will determine U.S. Jew-ish representation to the World Zionist Congress, the highest legislative body of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). The WZO provides a forum for all the world’s Jews to come together and deliberate about issues affecting both Diaspora Jews and the state of affairs in Israel.

“My Grandpa (Rabbi) Judea Miller was a pretty heroic rabbi. When he was a rabbi up in Boston, he would go down to the deep South where segregation was the worst to protest against the injustice he saw. This was really dangerous. We promote curiosity and wonder and encourage children to think and question. We are a community where relationships matter. We pave the first steps of their educational journey with Jewish values.

We offer the flexibility of extended hours before and after school and camp.

5th Annual Community Education Day on Arab Citizens of Israel

Join us at the DCJCC on Sun-day, Feb-ruary 22 from 1:30 – 5:00 pm for an in-

depth exploration of the daily lives and challenges of Arab citizens of Israel. The afternoon will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Dalia Fadila, president of Al-Qasemi College of Engineering

and Science and panel discussion. Fol-lowing the panel is the D.C. premiere of Dancing Arabs, a bittersweet ’80s coming-of-age drama about a gifted Arab teenager who wins the oppor-tunity to attend a prestigious Jewish boarding school. Isolated and lonely at first, he begins to fit in and form close friendships, but heartbreak, personal tragedy, and politics threaten to destroy his adolescent idyll.

RSVP for Community Education Day and purchase tickets for the film online, wjff.org/dayofed.
