Everyday Care

Properly caring for your equip-ment can help to extend theworking life of the system andensure your readings remain fastand accurate.

Taking a few minutes each dayto make sure that the system iscleaned and stored properly willgreatly lengthen the lifetime ofyour pH electrode.

Store the electrode in storage solutionThe storage stand is the simplestway to ensure the pH electrodeis kept immersed in storagesolution when not in use.Use the TRUEscience ownstorage solution (item 1145514)or the electrode manufacturer’srecommended solution.NEVER store the electrode inwater or dry - this will damagethe electrode, possibly beyondrepair.

Rinse the electrode after useAfter any sample or buffer, orbefore putting the electrodeinto storage solution, alwaysrinse it clean with water. This prevents cross-contamination betweendifferent samples and removesany residue from the electrodebefore it dries onto the surface.

Rinse under the tap, in a beakerof rinse water (changedregularly) or with a wash bottle.

Keep the cap dryWhile the electrode andtemperature probe can beplaced in liquid samples, the topcap should be kept dry.

Take care when working and dryoff small splashes with a drytowel. If the cap is dropped into waterit may be damaged beyondrepair - carefully remove it andleave to dry for 24 hours beforeattempting to use it again.

Everyday Care

Choose an electrode to suityour samplesSpecialist electrodes may beneeded for samples that containproteins, are highly corrosive, are viscous, are solid or semi-solid, TRIS buffers or foodproducts. We can help you choose anelectrode if you’re unsure andremember you can use anyelectrode with a standard S7connector - even from othermanfuacturers!

Calibrate regularlyWe recommend calibrating yourpH electrode at least once a day,to keep it accurate.

Follow the instructions in thecalibration section of thismanual for full details on howto do this.

Treat the electrode with careThe sensing tip of the electrodeis highly delicate, and should betreated with care. Dropping the electrode orletting it knock against surfacesor containers can crack thedelicate sensing surface.

Rubbing the electrode to clean itwill build up electrostatic chargethat will stop it from working -only clean by stirring gently incleaning solution.

Remember that pH electrodes do expire!Even with very good care, thedelicate nature of pH electrodesmeans that they do have a finitelife.

With the right electrode for thesamples and carefulmaintenance, we expect themto last around 12 - 24 months.

All electrodes will needreplacing eventually.

Word Definition

Buffer A buffer (or pH buffer) is a solution which has a known and fixed pH value. Thismeans we can use them to calibrate the electrode, because we are definitely surewhat the reading should be.

Calibration Calibration is required on most electrode systems to allow the mV signal being sentto the electronics in the meter to be compared to known standards. This then allowsyou to measure samples and display the corresponding pH or concentration.

Device Your device is just another word for the Android Tablet or Smartphone. We usuallyrefer to the tablet, since this is supplied in the full TRUEscience kit, but of course youcan bring your own Android device which may be a Smartphone or a Tablet.

DI De-Ionised - normally associated with water. Although DI water is good for rinsingelectrodes to ensure no ions are present it should not be used as astorage solution.

Dilution Used when making up standards from a stock solution. Typically you will do a 1:10dilution of your stock solution followed by a 1:10 dilution of your first dilution.

Electrode A measuring cell that generally produces a small mV signal when placed in solutionscontaining ions or oxygen

Ion An ion is an atom which has gained or lost one or more of its valence electrons giv-ing it a net postive or negative charge.

ISE Ion Selective Electrode - an electrode which responds to the presence of specfifc ionsin solution. a pH electrode is an electrode specific to Hydrogen but other types aretypically used for things like chloride ions, nitrate ions etc

ISAB Ionic Strength Adjustment Buffer - these buffers are used to increase the signal re-ceived from an ISE when measuring low concentrations.By adding the same amountof buffer to your standrads and samples you incan increase the overall signal andsensitivity of measurement

Word Definition

Standard A solution usually containing a known concentration of a species of interest. These tend to be hight concentrtionto ensure they are stable. When used to calibrate for ISE measurement they will be diluted to bracket theconcentration of the samples being measured. It is important when making standards that you use a matrix assimilar as possible to your sample.

mg/l milligrams per litre - this is often used to express the concentration of a standard and quite literally refers to thenumber of milligrams of standard material there would be in a litre of solution.

PPM parts per million - a common unit of measure for standards which expresses values as parts per million s op-posed to mg/l
