By Sally Rummel • [email protected] Mike and Diane Durkin of Argentine Township have lived on Lobdell Lake full time since retiring in 2005. One of their most enjoyable summer activities is taking friends and family out for a cruise in their pontoon, then enjoying a dockside stop at an area restaurant. Whether you’re dining dockside on the water or patio-side enjoying the view, waterfront dining seems to be more popular than ever before.
“It’s so conven-ient,” said Diane, 69. “We have so many friends on the lake. It’s what we like to do.” Some water-front restaurants have become local landmarks, with a long history of serving boaters and other guests alike. Snappers-on-the-Water on Bennett Lake used to be Twin Gardens before
owner Kirk Norman took over 14 years ago. He says a lot of people make this a destination on the water, including the motorcycle com-munity that rides from
all over Michigan to get here. “We do unique things to keep our name out there,” said Norman. “The word gets around.” While Snappers is known for its nightlife and a younger crowd, Norman
says their Bloody Mary Bar on Sundays is drawing older patrons, too. Recently re-done outdoors with a Key West theme, Norman says that the atmosphere is its biggest selling point. “People want to enjoy the lake and forget about their problems. They just want to have fun,” he said. Lakeview Bar & Grill in Argentine Township has undergone several name changes in the past, but one thing remains

After graduating from eighth grade in 1967, my family moved to the Chicago area because my father was promoted within the Sears organiza-tion. A couple of years later, he was assigned to the Sears Tower (now the Willis building) as a structural en-gineer. Construction on the building began in 1970. Before that move, we lived in a rural area just west of Kankakee, Il-linois. I went to an old country school and my eighth-grade graduating class boasted 28 stu-dents. I went from growing up in that little school to a high school in Skokie, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. There were three floors and more than 3,000 students in my new high school. There were four principals, one for each class. My class graduated close to 800 seniors in 1971. More than 95 percent of the students in my high school were Jewish. Where I grew up there were two predominant religions — Lutheran and Methodist. I never met a Jewish person and knew nothing about them except for the lit-tle we learned in school and Sunday school. Talk about culture shock. I quickly discovered one advantage to being in an almost all-Jewish school. We had three days off in September for Jewish holidays, including Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Another thing I discovered im-mediately was that the vast majority of my classmates were rich. I mean
really rich. They lived in mansions, had the nicest cars and wore the finest clothes. The incredible clothes both-ered me the most. I had OK stuff to wear, but not like these girls. We are talking genuine cashmere sweaters, real silk blouses and wool skirts from Ireland and Scotland. Splurging on clothes meant Sears in my family, and we got a discount. I could not compete so I did the next best thing — I rebelled. As luck would have it, this was the start of the “hippy movement,” so I fit right in. My fa-vorite thing to wear to school was a pair of hip-hugger, bell-bottom jeans, with a long sleeved tie-died T-shirt. Over that, I wore a suede jacket with fringes laced with colorful beads. Sometimes I wore a big floppy hat. After graduating, I didn’t go off to college to become a scientist, doctor or lawyer like so many of my wealthy classmates. I went to a junior college and chose liberal arts instead. My wealthy classmates and their friends took trips to Paris and Honolulu. My friends went to Vietnam. You might say that not being able to afford the clothes I wanted to wear as a teenager changed the direction of my life. That wasn’t the only rea-son, of course, and I am not unhappy about it because this is when I discov-ered I had other talents, like writing. I also am blessed with a great job and many Jewish friends. However, if someone were to ask me today if uniforms should be required at-tire in schools, and thinking about how I felt when I was a teenager, I would opt to level the playing field and say “Yes, definitely yes.”Opinions offered in Just Sayin’ are the author’s alone and do not necessar-ily reflect the opinion of the Tri-County Times or its staff. GOOD FOODContinued from Page 1B constant — a beautiful view of Lobdell Lake. With 18 boat slips and a dedicated dockside menu concept, this indoor/outdoor eatery attracts a lot of boat-ers. “This is our first summer (as Lakeview),” said Michael Dunn, general manager. “It’s gone well so far. We’re getting busier every week. It’s a 50/50 split between boaters and regular customers enjoy-ing the patio, just depends on the weather.” Also serving customers on Lobdell Lake is North-shore Market. Best known for their pizza, pizza bites, burgers, wings, ribs and deli sandwiches, the Conway family serves food on their back patio and also delivers to boaters on the lake. “We deliver on our Jet Skis,” said Briana Conway. “Usually on weekends, especially Saturdays, our biggest delivery day. We can deliver beer, liquor, anything.” Anything, that is, except ice cream — another of Northshore Market’s biggest summer sellers. “Everyone gets ice cream,” said Briana. “They’ll enjoy a cone out on the back deck or on the picnic tables.” The Fenton Moose Lodge on the north end of Lake Fenton has been serving customers lakeside for dec-ades. The only catch is you have to be a member, or be accompanied by a member, to dine at the lodge. That doesn’t seem to slow down the constant boat traffic and indoor din-ing. With 1,700 members, the Fenton Moose Lodge keeps getting busier and busier. “About 60 to 70 percent of our
diners come off the boat,” said Melissa Palmer, general manager. They can accommodate up to 18 boats at one time, and if it’s too busy, Palmer said people sometimes take their boats home and come through the back door. “We don’t deliver dockside, unless someone is elderly or handicapped,” she said. “You’ve got to come in off your boat. Lots
of people get take-outs.” The weekly dinner specials really draw a crowd to “the Moose.” “Friday Night Fish Fry is our busiest night,” said Palmer. “We’ll serve 350 to 400 dinners within four hours.” Other weekly specials are on Tuesday — Rib
Night, Wednesday — Steak Night and Thursday — Burger Night. The newest waterfront restaurant is Triple C’s Lakeshore Grille, on the shore of Lake Ponemah. Open for just two weeks, new owners Joe and Cheryl Schoenemann say that the majority of lake people are excited to have a place to go. “About 75 to 80 percent do want to sit outside on the deck to enjoy the beautiful view,” said Cheryl. Some of their most popular menu items are fish and chips, pork and beef sliders and burgers. Right now, boaters can use the boat slips and enjoy eating at picnic tables at the waterfront. “They can pick up their food or we can have someone run it down to them,” she said. The owners say that they want Triple C’s to be more of a family res-taurant than a bar, although they do serve liquor. “We’ve got a lot of plans for the future,” said Cheryl.
n Waterfront dining is a popular concept in the tri-county area, especially on some of the largest lakes in Fenton and Argentine Township.

‘Fish is good brain food…’ After reading this you may have second thoughts about taking advice from the Three Stooges
This brings new meaning to the word “seafood.” Would you eat tuna eyeballs? Tuna Eye is one of the weirdest foods consumed around the world. This slip-pery, soft, white creamy blob is a popular winter delicacy in Shirako, Japan.

Gaebul is a species of marine spoon worm. It is widely referred to as a Fat Inn-keeper Worm or the penis fish. This spoon worm is commonly eaten raw in Japan and especially Korea. This is often eaten with salt and sesame oil in Korea. In Hokkaido, Japan, this is called ruttsu and served as sashimi. Wanna try? People actually eat these.

The Japanese have long known about the incredible health benefits of eating deli-cious insects. Rumor has it that Japanese emperor Hirohito in the 1900s favored a meal of cooked rice and canned wasps with soy sauce and sugar. Insects are currently eaten in many dishes, though the latest craze is insect sushi with all manner of tasty creepy crawlies served on top.
Fugu, also known as puffer fish or blowfish, are commonly consumed in Japan. It’s a risky proposition to eat Fugu, as the fish is highly poisonous if prepared improperly. According to Rosofsky’s entry in “They Eat That? A Cul-tural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food Around the World,” thrill-seeking connoisseurs crave the lip and tongue-tingling sensation they say a highly skilled fugu chef can create by leaving a non-lethal trace of poison on the fish. It’s that element of danger that entices the adventurous eater. Rosofsky also notes it’s that risky business combined with the rar-ity and mild silky texture that makes this one so desirable.

Sannakji (live octopus) is a famous dish in Korea. The octopus is chopped or kept whole, and you eat while it is wiggling on a dish. However, eating the whole one is quite dangerous because the suction cups on the tentacles can cling tenaciously and you could get one stuck in your throat.

HONEY REDHOT SHRIMP“I like shrimp, A LOT. I also like spicy food. This dish is enough for two (if you double the shrimp!) What can I say, I only had enough shrimp for me! Seriously this might be the best tasting shrimp I’ve ever eaten in my life!” — Trish
INGREDIENTS• One pound peeled, cleaned and deveined shrimp • 4 Tbsp butter• 1 lime• 2 Tbsp fresh cilantro (chopped)• 2 cloves garlic (minced)• 2 Tbsp honey• 1 Tbsp Frank’s RedHot sauce• Salt• Pepper
DIRECTIONSRinse and pat dry the shrimp. Zest the lime and then cut it into wedges. Stem and chop the cilantro. Mince 2 cloves of garlic. Melt the butter over medium high heat, and add in the garlic, honey and red hot sauce. When it starts bubbling, place the shrimp in and do not crowd the pan. Let them cook for two minutes and then turn them over. Cook for one minute more, and then plate them with the side of your liking. I used authentic Ramen noodles. Don’t forget the sauce in the pan! Toss it with the shrimp and then squeeze a couple lime wedges on top of all of it!
