‘Hoping for the best’Dear Editor,

The “Public Information” sheet compiled by concernedresidents that is currently circulating widely amongPagrovians via e-mail further assures me that I have made theright decision to support all three of Pacific Grove’s proposedtax measures on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Change can be difficult and even scary when one is com-fortable with the way things have always been. Contentiouscomments with respect to these changes are disruptive andcounterproductive. I am thankful that Pacific Grove has acity council prepared to make the tough but necessary deci-sions to help move our city forward. It is time to take thisstand. I’m hoping for the best for our little corner of paradiseby voting YES on Measures O, P and Q. It takes a “YES”vote on all three, or all of them fail.

Donna Stewart Pacific Grove

increases. Why? Because we have been told they are neces-sary to the future well-being of our town. Why else would aproperty owner, renter (indirectly), successful businessowner, or P.G. consumer vote to pay more in taxes?

Are these taxes really needed? City manager JimColangelo and the mayor certainly paint a dark picture if wefail to vote yes. But let’s look at this calmly and objectively.

Common sense and past experience tell us they are exag-gerating. Remember when Salinas voters failed to raise theirtaxes to save Natividad Hospital. Doomsday! But somehow,it all worked out — and for the best.

Common sense suggests that Colangelo timed his staffcuts to lull us into believing he will do his part. But oncetaxes are increased, what is his motivation? What messageare we sending by writing them a big check? When have you

ever known any public body to reduce its spending withoutintense pressure, especially when it involves laying off co-workers?

Common sense reminds us that fear-mongering is a nastyhabit among public officials. In this case, they imply that ouressential services are at risk, that we may lose police or fireservice. You know that cannot and will not happen.

Applying our common sense to their exaggeration, manipulation and fear-mongering, let’s look at what will hap-pen if we don’t increase these taxes? Colangelo and the oth-ers will be forced to balance our budget anyway. Employeeswith outrageous packages will be let go for the good of thecity. Their union will argue against the layoffs, against thegood of the city. Once the smoke clears, some replacementswill be hired with much more reasonable packages. We willdo without a few recreational services for awhile, but thenthey will be restored. And our beloved city of Pacific Grove

will be much, much healthier. This is what eternal vigilancemeans. Now is when we need to stand up, take a deep breath, and vote no to higher taxes.

E. A. Roberts, Pacific Grove
