e Art of Being Malaysian!

DPAC Arts Festival (DAF), initiated in 2014, captures the essence of locally-born works as well as international programmes. e Festival’s programmes cultivate and co-present local and international works that can galvanise the young and old. We believe that arts should enrich and enliven the lives of all, whether creating or viewing. Besides, arts should be easily accessible for artists and audiences to appreciate, enjoy and interact with one another.

e 3rd edition of DPAC Arts Festival is back better than ever, so come and indulge in arts! is highly anticipated event will feature a diverse and compelling mix of engaging performances of theatre, dance and music, fantastic site-specic performances and a family-friendly arts bazaar over a ten-day period: 10th to 19th July 2017.

between dance and architecture, from an industrial walkway to a decorative staircase, audiences are taken out of the theatre to observe the conversation between dance and the environment. It will be a perfect way to wrap-up the weekend with family and friends.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to all our supporters, Goethe-Institut, and the Embassy of Spain in Kuala Lumpur, who are always so supportive, as well as the Taipei Economic & Cultural Oce In Malaysia, who is on board this year’s festival for the rst time. Not forgetting our sponsors, partners and the volunteers who share our passion in arts with hard work and dedication, and the audiences, whose continuous support has made this festival possible.

I look forward to seeing you at the festival. Join me and discover art in and around DPAC.

Warm wishes,

You don't need clamorous music at such a peaceful moment, the only thing you need is tranquility.

In Puppets, Rosolen takes us to the periphery of choreography in order to reinterpret a key image of dance. In many epochs and cultures, e.g. in romantic ballet and in classical Javanese dance, the puppet’s movements have been seen as a kind of ideal dance. Now, Rosolen puts an astonishing twist on this relationship between puppets and dancers. Instead of focusing on the movements of the puppets, she concentrates on those of the puppeteers. What kind of dances usually escapes our attention? What kind of choreographic patterns emerge from the joint handling of a puppet? By exploring an art form foreign to dance – i.e. puppet theater – Rosolen develops a new perspective on dance and the perception thereof.

In 2015, Paula Rosolen founded the company Haptic Hide as a production structure for her artistic projects. e company is based in Frankfurt am Main and works internationally in collaboration with theaters in European, South American and Asian countries in particular, such as Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main and éâtre de la Ville in Paris. In addition to this, Haptic Hide collaborates with a range of dierent foundations and institutions, including the Goethe-Institut.

In a small room where memories hung over the walls, sound the keys of a typewriter and the notes of a cello. ey are André and Dorine, an elderly couple that lives just like many old couples do: gently decaying from routine and neglect, with passion once so huge for each other now fading into indierence. But an event occurs to break the monotony, and so begins a fresh start in their relationship; a journey through memory. e couple needs to remember who they were, so as not to forget who they are now. Remember how they loved in order to keep loving each other.

e Kulunka eatre Company was created in e Basque Country, Spain, in 2010 by Garbiñe Insausti and Jose Dault: young but widely experienced theater career artists. It all stemmed from the concern of its members to experiment with dierent possible stage languages, relying on a stage that is itself a meeting point between dierent artistic disciplines. All this without forgetting the idea of making theatre accessible to the wide public. An idea of theatre that is vibrant, contemporary, committed and connected to reality.

A story of the fragments in a life’s journey between the traditional and the modern world. In the arts and Islamic sections, in the cradle of dreams and reality, amidst angst and calmness. A woman performs the tradional art of the Eastern Mak Yong {Kelantan} which ripples with the Northern Mek Mulung {Kedah} as she sings the Mak Yong of the Riau Islands. e woman moves and laments of being loved and being praised, being attered upon by beauty, the struggles of adoring being adored and in stumbling within.

is about the pauses and stops a woman facesin her journey of the caprices of life.

Zamzuriah Zahari graduated with a Diploma in Dance from ASWARA and Bachelor of Performing Arts (Drama) from the University of Malaya. roughout her involvement in the arts, she has been heavily involved in shows in and out of the state as a choreorapher, dancer, actress and singer. Dancing in Place- Cy Se 2017

“Dancing in Place” is a celebration of dance on site, originally presented at Rimbun Dahan, and it is now at DPAC and its vicinity. e module invites dance artists, both local and international, to create works outside the traditional theatre setting. e second edition of the city site remains as a dialogue between dance and architecture. Participating dance artists create short works in response to a particular site, inspired by its architecture or design. From an industrial walkway to a decorative staircase, audiences are taken out of the theatre to observe the conversation between dance and the environment.

A fun and informal excursion of ‘Dance Meets Architecture’ featuring eight short dance works performed outdoors in the vicinity of DPAC.
