Rooflight Installation and Fixing Details
Primary Fixings
Primary fixings should have an adequate strength toresist the design load, imposed load and wind loadingand maintain weathertightness. Also, where requiredby the cladding and support design, to provideadequate lateral restraint to substructure elementssuch as purlins and spacers. In addition, they may berequired to accommodate some thermal movementin the direction of the profiles. This can be achieved byoversizing fixing holes, or by elastic displacement orpurlins and spacers. Primary fixings are divided intotwo groups, rigid fixings and non-rigid fixings.
It is essential that the watertightness of fixings withfasteners penetrating the sheeting should remaineffective when the sheeting is subjected to themaximum inward imposed loading including wind.
Under such loads, the sheeting and any insulatingsubstrate will compress and thereby tend to loosenthe seal in the fastener, increasing the risk of waterpenetration. It is therefore important to ensure thatthe sheeting, substrate, and fastener including sealingwasher, can provide adequate performance underthese conditions.
Additional security can be obtained by the use offasteners, which secure the sheeting against inwardmovement as well as against outward loads.
Primary fixings should be positioned along andsecured to the lines of purlins, sheeting rails orspacers. End laps in profiled sheeting should bearranged to occur over purlin, sheeting rail or spacerlines and secured by the same primary fixings.
Along the purlin, sheeting rail or spacer lines, theprimary fixings should be spaced so as to maintain atight end lap, resist the wind suction loads on thecladding and fasteners, in accordance with themanufacturers instructions and avoid vibration of thesheeting.
Where there is a head or tail lap condition theCompany recommends the use of a landing/ spreaderplate which should be a minimum of 100mm wide. The thickness should be the same as the purlin sectionalready in place. This applies where it is rooflight torooflight, metal to rooflight and rooflight to metal.
Fasteners for primary fixings should always be fixedthrough the troughs. Crown fixings are sometimesused but, because of their longer lengths, they are atgreater risk of not being inserted perpendicularly tothe crown, this may adversely affect the effectivenessof the seal. There is also a greater risk of the profilebeing distorted in case of the overtightening of thefastener. Hook bolts should be profiled to match theshape of the purlin or sheeting rail.
Secondary Fixings
The main function of secondary fixings is tomaintain a tight lap and seal, but they are alsorequired to transfer concentrated load to adjacentsheets.
When required fasteners for secondary fixings, orstitch fasteners should be positioned at side laps onthe crown for roof cladding and in the trough orcrown for wall cladding, depending on the profile. The fastener and method of installation should beable to accommodate and compress a seal in the lapjoint where a seal is used. The spacing of stitchfasteners depends on the thickness and the presenceor otherwise of a sealant in the joint, but shouldgenerally be not more than 450mm apart.
For aluminium sheeting, the use of conventional selftapping screws into sheeting less than 1mmthickness is not recommended, but, if propriety selfdrilling screws designed for the purpose are used, the manufacturers instructions should be followed. For specific advice, please contact our sales officeregarding suitable fasteners for secondary fixing ofStepSafe and Contour sheeting.
All fixings should be of stainless steel manufactureto ensure long term non-fragility performance of therooflights. This is however, particularly relevant inconnection with the StepSafe non-fragilityguarantee detailed on page 2.4.

Purlin Centres
StepSafe and Contour sheets have differentproperties to fibre cement, steel, and aluminiumsheets and they do not necessarily have the samespan capabilities.
The chart set out is a guide to the recommendedmaximum span in metres between purlins.
Panel weights in kg/m2
1.83 2.44+
Depth of profile Purlin centres in metres
15 to 20mm 1.25 1.5020 to 25mm 1.50 1.7525 to 30mm 1.60 1.8530 to 35mm 1.80 2.05over 35mm 2.00 2.25
Although FAIRS are more rigid than single skinsheets, recommended purlin centres should not beexceeded as any excessive deflection could strain orweaken bonding joints.
Sealing
For site assembled units which are used inconjunction with sealed metal lining systems, thetranslucent liner should form an integral part of thevapour sealed liners and therefore end side lapsshould be sealed. The shallow depths of liningpanels required to match metal liner may determinepurlin centres. It is recommended that closures beused around the perimeter of the rooflights toprevent the ingress of insulation materials betweenthe translucent panels.
For FAIRS, the joints between the units and adjacentlining materials should be effectively sealed.
Structural
Rooflights cannot be considered as a structuralelement within a stressed skin construction.
Humidity
Where high humidity may increase condensationproblems, special provision will be required and insuch cases, confirmation of the suitability ofrooflights should be obtained from our sales office.

Fixing Specification Rooflights
This specification is of ageneral nature only as topsheet profiles will varyand consequently theremay be certainapplication variations infixing.
StepSafe and Contourrooflights should befastened to the steelworkstructure in every troughof the profile with aminimum 29mm selfdrill/self tap fixing. Profileconfigurations with widetroughs will need 2 fixingsper trough. Fixings arerecommended to bemanufactured in stainlesssteel, see also page 2.4.
Side laps should bestitched at maximum300mm centres. Headand tail laps to be 150mmminimum. Side lapsshould be sealed with onerun of 9mm × 3mm crosslinked sealant (Butyl type)or equivalent.
Head and tail laps shouldbe sealed using one run ofa 18mm × 4V cross linkedsealant (Butyl type) orequivalent, oralternatively they may besealed with two strips ofsealing tape 50mm apartof a 6mm to 8mm beadof cross linked (Butyl type)sealant as illustrated.
