The Problem and the Solution...The Problem - Heat BuildupHeat buildup, the mortal enemy of elec-tric motors can destroy conventional motorbrakes. Although heat is the natural productof the braking process, increased starts andstops of the electric motor create intenseheat in conventional brake devices. Oftenheat buildup damages the brake as well asthe electric motor - and frequently causesfailure of the entire system. This can meanincreased downtime - as well as highermaintenance costs.

Conventional dry friction brake devices cantake the heat from industrial motors, butthey sacrifice friction material with eachstop. They deteriorate with repeated use.Even though the motor is spared the stressof excessive braking heat, the brakesrequire routine maintenance such as coiland friction material replacement .The result of heat buildup - Breakdowns.Dry brakes have a short life, suffer fromincreased wear and may cause downtimelosses that come from frequent mainte-nance and replacement.

The Solution - MagnaShearMotor BrakesMagnaShear Motor Brakes combine oilshear durability with electric actuation, sim-ple control logic and spring-set load holding.Easy to install, economical to operate,MagnaShear motor brakes run on 115 or 230VAC, 50 or 60 Hz.. They fit a wide range ofmotors, including NEMA U-frame, T-frameand low inertia IEC motors.

MagnaShear Oil Shear Brakes aredesigned to dissipate the heat buildup thatdestroy conventional braking devices.

The MagnaShear absorbs the energy gen-erated by the braking action and controlsthe heat buildup - thus providing greaterreliability and repeatability, as well as heatdissipation.

Unlike conventional motor brakes, theMagnaShear is a multiple surface devicethat operates on a spring activated, pres-sure release system. Its’ multiple disc stackand internal oil pump helps to eliminate theneed to replace coils and friction material -and reduce the heat on any one friction sur-face.

1. MSB2 “Quick Mount” MagnaShear has a non-pilotedmounting flange for a 5-7/8” Dia. Mounting B.C. 5/8” Dia.and 7/8” Dia. Hub Bores are available. It has a StaticTorque Range of 6 Lb. Ft. to 12 Lb. Ft. Used on 56C,143TC and 145TC Frame Motors.

2. MSB4 “Quick Mount” MagnaShear has a non-pilotedUniversal Mounting Flange for a 5-7/8” Dia. or a 7-1/4” Dia.Mounting B.C. 7/8” Dia. and 1-1/8” Dia. Hub Bores areavailable. It has a Static Torque Range of 14 Lb. Ft. to 33Lb. Ft. Used on 143TC, 145TC, 182TC and 184TC FrameMotors.

3. MSB6 “Quick Mount” MagnaShear has a non-pilotedmounting flange for a 7-1/4” Dia. Mounting B.C. 7/8”Dia.,1-1/8” Dia. and 1-3/8” Dia. Hub Bores are available. Ithas a Static Torque Range of 38 Lb. Ft. to 86 Lb. Ft. Usedon 213TC, 215TC, 254TC and 256TC Frame Motors.

Description and Operation

DescriptionA spring set brake stack is released when 115or 230 VAC power is supplied to the BrakeCoil. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)Control is used to minimize heat buildup.Control logic is made simple by use of themotor starter auxiliary contactors. Back EMFeffect from the motor windings is eliminated.

The units are ideal for a wide variety of appli-cations including indexing tables, lifts, transferconveyors, tap heads and other start/stopdevices. Applications requiring the brake to bereleased on an average of more than 50% ofthe time or for long durations must bereviewed and approved by our ApplicationEngineering Department.

OperationThe cross section below shows the MSB2MagnaShear Motor Brake in the stoppedposition with the brake stack engaged. TheMagnaShear Motor Brake will default to thisposition when all power is lost.

To run the Drive Motor the Brake Coil is ener-gized, pulling the Armature Plate Assemblyaway from the Brake Stack which allows thesplined hub and drive motor to rotate inde-pendently from the motor brake.

To stop the Drive Motor the Brake Coil is de-energized. This allows the brake springs topush the Armature Plate Assembly againstthe Brake Stack, clamping it and stopping thesplined hub and drive motor.

SIMPLIFIED MOUNTING SYSTEMThe MSB2, MSB4 and the MSB6 MagnaShear Motor Brakesadds a new level of convience with the mounting to the motorwith the Universal Mounting Flange and Split-Quill design. Theinnovative Clamped-Split-Quill and a 360° Clamping Collarabsolutely stops all play and movement between the Brake Huband the Motor Shaft caused by high-torque and rapid-cyclingapplications.

MagnaShear Motor Brake Typical ApplicationsA major type of application for theMagnaShear Motor Brakes is one in whichthe motor reverses each cycle. Theclutch/brake is not as practical in this case. Abrake is needed to stop the motor beforereversing. Also applications that operate atlow cycle rates and start and stop each cycle.

The MagnaShear Motor Brakes are typical-ly used in dirty and wet environments whereposition is critical and productivity is a majorconcern. They are also used on many verticalor over hauling applications as the oil shear

technology provides high heat dissipationcapability. They can be sized to the correcttorque independent of the motor frame size orhorsepower.

The MagnaShear Motor Brake can be fur-nished three ways. (1) To fit a NEMA or IECframe motor. (2) As a complete motor andbrake assembly (EBM) (3) To mount on amachine frame or other special mountingconfiguration. A few typical applications areshown below.

MagnaShear Electric Brake Motor (EBM)The MagnaShear EBM consists of a motor with a MagnaShear Electric Motor Brakeassembled and ready to use. The MagnaShear EBM is available in many sizes and torqueranges from 3 Ft. Lbs. up to 200 Ft. Lbs. By ordering the MagnaShear EBM, complete motorand brake assembly, installation time is reduced to mounting the motor and wiring in the elec-trical supply.

EBM units are pre-assembled to your specified torque ratings and configuration, filledwith the proper amount of fluid and cycle tested ready for quick installation.

Many custom options are available. Please contact yourlocal authorized distributor, area representative or thefactory for any special needs and applications.

1. Determine the motor HP and RPM your specificapplication requires.

2. Determine the brake torque requirement of your application. (See Section 15 for procedure.)

3. Select the correct size of MagnaShear Brake andtorque setting from the Specification Tables on this page.

4. Determine the correct motor specification.

5. Determine the EBM mounting position.
