THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER--JULY 12, 1975

Nobody quite knows howmany different occupations thereare, but it runs to several thousands .

Think about your dad's time .That was before R&. D Departments, real electronics, motels or mass media .

Today, a young man can makehis way with ambition and a naturaltalent that will buy him success andsatisfaction. Of course, it's more thanjust desire and flair; he has to workhard but he's doing somethinghe enjoys .

An A.M.P. man understandsthat . After all, he's doing somethingthat uses his own talents and helikes it. .

Talk to an A.M.P. man. Tell himwhere you fit into life and he'll tellyou how a sound insurance plancan fit in too.

-GEELON-G GIVE ST. BER NARD'S A FRIGHTORMOND DOWN TO OLD TRINITY - 1 PT .Blacks hold off North's challenge

By GEORGE McTAGGART

Bottom team Geelong, who have not won a match, veary nearly causedan upset last week when they ran the leaders, St . Bernard's, to a goal. It waseasily Geelong's best performance for the season.

Ormond suffered their third successive defeat when they went down bya point to Old Trinity in a real thriller . Trinity are now just outside the fouron percentage .

North Old Boys made a strong last quarter bid for victory against Uni-versity Blacks but failed to get there by four points. Of North's five defeatsthis season, three have been by less than a goal.

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE -After 11 rounds, there is not oneundefeated team in the competition. The last to go were Monash Whiteswho were beaten by Bulleen United, the margin being 25 points .

St. Bernard's put on 7 goals in thesecond quarter to lead Geelong by17 points at the interval and lookedto be in for at least a comfortablewin .

But Geelong held the leaders to onegoal in the third term and got onlevel terms at the last change . Thelast quarter was a thriller but St .Bernard's greater experience andextra touch of class enabled them tohold off the tenacious Geelong andwin by 6 points .

What are the odds against a teambein g a point in front at half-timethree-quarter-time and at the finalsiren? Well that's what happenedin the Ormond-Old Trinity game, withTrinity being in the fortunate posi-tion.

It was one of the most remarkablyeven matches imaginable with littlebetween the scores all day. Even atthe first break, the difference wasonly 4 points - in Trinity's favour.

Two goals in the first minute ofthe second quarter enabled UniversityBlacks to wipe off their 11-point de-ficit at quarter-time and they werenever headed after that.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY

They lead by 8 points at the intervaland looked in a strong position witha 3-goal advantage at three-quarter-time. North put in a strong lastquarter, kicking 5 goals, but .theBlacks were able to hold off the chal-lenge and score by 4 points .

Reservoir Old Boys' effective hand-ball and the brilliance of their smallmen were too much for MonashBlues, who were beaten by more than7 goals, while Old Paradians failedmiserably against Coburg, kickingonly 4 points in the second half.

Caulfield Grammarians wiltedagainst De La Salle in the secondhalf after being only a point downat the interval, and were beaten byjust over 10 goals . It was their sec-ond successive defeat and they havedropped to fourth .

Marcellin's hopes of making thefinals received a setback when theycrashed against University Blues whowon by more than 12 goals.

Collegians beat Old Carey by a goal,Old Scotch were too strong for OldHaileybury and Ivanhoe were nottroubled to beat Kew by 9 goals .

on playing his 100th game against Geelonglast Saturday. Since joining the club Rayhas been a mainstay in the first XVIIIand has played in all key positions on theback and forward lines as well as on theball. Because of his habit of leading withhis head, coupled with his fearless play,Ray unfortunately has missed a number ofgames through injury . This year he hastaken on the role of full back and hisclearing dashes and beautiful kicking is oneof the main reasons for the club enjoyingsuch a successful year. Congratulations"Kingy" the committee and all players andsupporters hope to watch you beating allfull forwards for a number of seasons tocome .

WARNINGIt's happened again at Royal Park, las t

S4turday thieves went through the dressingrooms and stole clothes belonging to thefieid and boundary umpire .

Fortunately the writer arrived and hav-ing had some experience at similar incid-cnts in this area, was able to find all theirclothes intact - they really went for thetaps this time as the field umpire was "hisworship" the Mayor of Doncaster - (they(acin't touch his horse) .

Do not LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES IN UN-I,OCKED ROOMS .

I was amazed last Saturady when, duringa reserves game, the full back when kick-ing off did so by giving a small kick clearof, hand and foot inside the kick off lines .

The poor umpire was soundly roasted bysupporters for allowing this type of kick-07, claiming that the ball must be kickedover the kick off line .Law 8C states - the bail shall be kicked

clear of hand and foot not necessarily overthe kick off lines, and once kicked shallbe deemed to be in play.Thought for the week -Never argue with nor abuse the umpire .

lie is doing his best, although it may bea poor best. Here's there for the day, soadapt your play to his umpiring, and get on

ith the game .(Otherwise you could get a "holiday"

refer Tribunal report in this issue - Ed .)SPORTS DAY

Well the top sportsmen of our Associa-tion have at last emerged.

What a day - Brian Goodman, playedtennis wearing his Brunswick Amateur Foot-ball jumper engineer Gerald Minson playedwhilst smoking a pipe, and Gary Nichol

"did his cool' 'and threw his tennis rac-quet into a neighbours back yard after TomCunneen had "aced" him .

Newcomer Geoff Kelly swept all opposi-tion aside and easily won the squash cham-pionship . Alan Bishop was runner-up.

The tennis title was more evenly con-tested and was eventually won by PhilipRowell and Gary Nichol who defeated DonDoods and Andrew Burridge 6/4 in the final .

Simon Marks didn't endow himself to thecoach when he defeated him in the singles .

(If you see Simon named emergency um-pire for the next 3 or 4 weeks you willknow why . )

The old reliabies Dressing, Hill, Mason, were all soundly defeated in first roundmatches.

In the final of the doubles district fastbowler Andy Burridge thought he was doingjust that and served that way - unfortun-ately they were all out of court.

On the girls' side Susan Rowell was thebest teams player, whilst Lois Mason wastops on the squash court. All had a great day and thanks to Simon

Marks who alone arranged the day .All winners were presented with beauti-

ful clocks donated by Mr. Marks - Simon'sfather - a most thoughtful gesture .

ONE TRINITY S , "PEERS"Another youngster hits the highlights this week, but he has packed a wealth of football

into his short career . He Is Old Trinity's Bill Peers, who has just turned 21 .

Bill started with Old Trinity in 1972, straight from school and like last week's per-sonality, Glen Fletcher, immediately gained a place in the senior side.

That is perhaps putting it mildly, forhe won his club's Best and Fairest awardin his first season . Not surprisingly, healso won the award for Best First Yearplayer in 1972 .

The following year he was runner-up forthe Best and Fairest award .

The same season (1973) he gained a placein the Victorian Carnival team and was amember of the Victorian team which playedTasmania at Hobart last year .

He also played against Tasmania atElsternwick Park last month, when he was t i20, 5'10" and 12-5, so he really has just,,rtained his majority .

Bill plays as a ruck-rover or in thecentre and it's not uncommon for him to belisted among the goal-kickers .

He is now in his fourth season with OldTrinity and has played about 55 gameswith his club.Since leaving school he has been studying

^ccountancy at Swinburne Technical Col-iege, and has just finished his course .

Bill is active during the "off-season"as he plays cricket with Mount Waverleyin the Sub-District Association .

There is still a great deal of footballahead of Bill Peers, and it would not besurprising to see him wearing a Victoriansweater on many more occasions yet .
