vears of their course. This book advocatesa selective approach to the requesting oftests, rather than the uncritical use ofbatteries of investigations. It is not alaboratory textbook of practical clinicalchemistry but rather a book that providesgeneral information about the biochemicalbasis of disease.

In this second edition several chaptershave been extensively revised, and a newchapter on clinical chemistry in geriatricshas been added. It seems a pity that thebatter is so limited in scope, occupyingonly six pages. Geriatric chemical pathol-ogy is likely to be a marked growing pointin the future and demands greater atten-tion. It is pleasing to note the attempts bythe authors to deal with such topics astherapeutic monitoring, computers, profileand screening methods of investigation, the terminology of SI units, and side roomchemical tests, in addition to chemicalinvestigation, but the growth of chemicalpathology is such that to encompass allof these items in a single textbook isbecoming extremely difficult.A very readable and comprehensive

book which can be recommended to allworking in a hospital laboratory.

GW PENNINGTON

Atlas ofHuman Hemopoietic Development.E Keleman, W Calvo, and TM Fliedner.(Pp 266;343 figs; 204 in colour; US$202.40.) Springer-Verlag. 1979.

The authors' aim is to demonstrate theessential histological, cytological, andelectron microscopic findings of variousstages of human haemopoietic develop-ment obtained during a study of 190embryos and fetuses. An introductory chapter discusses the

concept of 'first generation haemopoieticcells' in yolk sac, chorion, and body stalk, with subsequent stem cell migration viavitilline and umbilicus vessels to establishintraembryonic 'second generation'haemopoiesis in liver. Further stem cellmigration results in bone marrow andsplenic haemopoiesis, and lymphopoiesisin lymph node and thymus. The three photographic sections are

logically presented in chronological order;the first deals with extraembryonichaemopoiesis, the second with intravas-cular haemopoietic cells, and a finalsection with 'organ-bound' haemopoiesis. The photography is of high qualitythroughout. Black-and-white photographsare used mainly to illustrate organ

development, and there are excellentcolour photographs of haemopoieticcells. The electron microscopy includessome fascinating pictures of cellularcontacts between endodermal environ-mental cells and erythropoietic precursorsThe text however is not quite so satisfying. The section on embryology lacks illustra-tions and had me searching for anembryology text containing explanatoryline drawings. Furthermore although theauthors acknowledge the limitations ofmorphology in identifying stem cells thephotographic legends abound with 'assum-ed', 'presumed', and 'apparent' progenitorcells, perhaps thereby confirming theillusive nature of the human pluripotentstem cell. Despite these criticisms I thinkthe book would be a useful reference forthose working in this field and may alsoprovide some interesting insights for theamateur.

CA SIEFF

Cancer: Assessment and Monitoring. EdSir Thomas Symington, AE Williams, andJG McVie. (Pp 412; illustrated; £22.)Churchill Livingstone. 1980.

Publications on cancer and cancer-relatedtopics are appearing at a rate which, many feel, far exceeds the generation ofnew information. As a result, many itemsare widely dispersed in the literature, andselective reading becomes harder tomaintain. The very diversity of muchrelated information, extending from basicscience at one end of the spectrum toclinical trials at the other, does identifythe need for books that assemble factsconcerning associated topics under stricteditorial control.

This book contains a distillate of paperspresented at the Tenth Pfizer Symposiumon the theme of the assessment andmonitoring of cancer. An introductorychapter on the biology of cancer bySymington sets the scene for chapters onclinical assessment, pathological tech-niques and diagnosis, tumour immunology, radiological assessment, nuclear medicineand assessment, biochemical aspects, anda final section on topics related to datacollection. Although some chapters relateto information of little immediate valuein the current understanding of diseaseassessment, others are informative andwell referenced. The heterogenous quality of the

chapters reflects the blanket publicationof a symposium, but the critical reader

who has the time to browse through thisbook will find several bright spots whichwill amply justify his effort.

JMA WHITEHOUSE

A Colour Atlas of Tumour Histopathology.NFC Gowing. (Pp 212; illustrated;£35.) Wolfe Medical Publications.1980.

Nine hundred and forty-four colourphotographs of Royal Marsden Hospitalhistopathology specimens, with commentsby the professor, should be impressive, interesting, and instructive. It is all ofthese, even though the pictures are smalland the comments are brief.

It is no fault of the author if this bookdoes not prove to be of great importance.Histopathology is not just patternmatching, and atlases are not workingbench books. This atlas will be well usedby membership candidates in their periodof purgatory between the papers and thepractical, but many of us may hope thatthe author will have another opportunityof combining colour photographs with amore extensive text-colour histopathol-ogy in depth. Gardeners, ornithologists, and cooks are now well provided withcolour publications, and this book, one ofthe best of its kind, shows the way aheadfor histopathology and colour photo-graphy.
