Secondary News
A word from Mrs Eckman This week has brought the students lots of pleasant
memories as they participated in special events in the local community, representing our school. Some were involved in activities related to the Visit of His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, others performed at the ‘Slovenian Book Days’ Festival (Slovenski dnevi knjige). Our youngest Secondary students had a lovely opportunity to test their listening skill and understanding of French by going to see a movie ‘Les Vacances Du Petit Nicolas’ at the local art cinema – Kino Dvor. You can read more about what took place further down in this issue of the Newsletter. The Monday’s Secondary assembly had a focus to promote an event, which unfortunately had to be postponed due to poor weather this week. ‘The Fun Run’, organised by our PE team, is a fundraiser to help support cancer research. The event, weather permitting, will now take place on Wednesday, May 29th. Furthermore, our Running club will be travelling to London in June to participate in the 5km ‘Race for Life’. The combined Primary and Secondary student-led assembly that took place yesterday, had a fantastic international feel. The Year 4 students, learning Slovene predominantly as a foreign language, presented the country they come from and highlighted some intriguing cultural and geographical facts. Sofya and Begum, both Year 7, did a fantastic job leading the assembly also in Slovene. To finish, Ms Kotnik conveyed the idea behind the assembly and emphasised how building bridges, either be between younger and older students, finding solutions and overcoming friction that does happen in friendships too.
I wish you all a relaxing May break before the final block of the year begins and to our Year 11, 12 and 13 students, much further success at the exams that will be taking place also during next week’s break.

Anda Eckman, Head of Secondary PTA News PTA News It is getting to that time of year when some families will be leaving BISL and Slovenia and new families are making their preparations to move here. It is always difficult for newcomers to find their feet, especially if they haven't arrived yet, so if you are leaving a rental property that might be interesting for an incoming family, please feel free to post in the Marketplace on Classlist. If you have items of furniture, toys or clothes for sale or offer, or you wish to invite people over for a yard/garage sale, you can also advertise this in the Marketplace. Our next big event is the Super Catering Coffee on Thursday 30th May. Everyone is invited and this will be a lovely opportunity to see where the school
meals are made and ask questions to the chefs! Fingers crossed for fine late spring weather! Lastly don't forget to join in the fun or be a spectator at Rowmania, at lake Bled Rowing Club this Saturday! PTA Events

Departmental News MFL News Slovene
On Wednesday 15th May, students from Y7 together with Ole from Y8 and Y4 students Maria, Liza, Eva, Anastasia, Katarina, Rowan, Robert, Cyprian, Denis, Dalen and Ali presented their countries at the “Slovenski dnevi knjige” (“Slovenian Book Days Festival”). The girls also sang a song 'Bit' by a Slovenian band Zmelkoow while accompanied by Aleks (Y7) on the guitar. Despite the cold and rainy weather, they were enthusiastic to show what they have learnt in Slovene. We want to thank them for their effort and their excellent performance. Well done, Sofya, Mairi, Maria, Divyansh and Aleks!

French
On Wednesday, Year 6 and Year 7 participated to the French movie festival 1, 2, 3 ciné. They went to the cinema Kinodvor to watch the French movie "Les vacances du petit Nicolas". The students were very curious and found Nicolas adventures really funny!

Royal visit of His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex
On Wednesday 15 May, students from Year 8 to 10 were invited by the British-Slovenian Chamber of Commerce, to attend an event that hosted His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.
Our chosen students were extremely excited to be a part of such an invaluable opportunity and they provided much assistance by registering and ushering guests and assisting in the cloakroom.
Prince Edward was in Slovenia to promote and represent the Duke of Edinburgh award (or MEPI) and the non-formal, real world education being a part of such a program provides. At BISL, Mr. Simon Irving is the contact should students wish to get involved.
I'd like to personally congratulate all of the students who attended and assisted at the event; Maria Z (Y8), Isabella S, Eren S, McKenna N, Carissa S (Y9), Taja B, Kasper H (Y10) and in her absence Ivona A (Y9). You looked very smart in your uniforms and represented the school proudly.

Music - BIMS
There was a meeting of the BIMS teachers on Saturday, 11th May and it was decided that the BIMS student concerts will held on the Sunday 9th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June at the school. The deadline for the teachers to record their students performing will be Monday, 17th June, ready to upload by the 30th June. Student recordings must be shared with me in either .wav or Mp3 format. A Compact Disc compilation will be available on request.
Mr Austin, Music Department
There has been a new tune on the wall this week and a few students have received prizes from Mrs. Reindl for figuring out what it is. Have you given it a try yet? The answer will be published in the next newsletter.

MEPI / Red cross first aid course.
We would like to thank the Red Cross for putting together a superb first aid course, which included all the basics, whilst also being tailored for the expedition needs of our MEPI participants. Dr. Urška Eržen Rupnik really engaged the group with a great presentation and hands-on practical session. She also allowed as much time as was necessary to answer all of our questions. Being two months pregnant herself, she made sure we knew that a pregnant lady should always be put into the recovery position on her left side - Did you know that?!

“IGRAJ SE Z MANO” FESTIVAL
This year BISL will have the opportunity to join the 9th IGRAJ SE Z MANO (Play with Me) festival in Ljubljana, a festival principally organised by Center of Janez Levec Ljubljana and the Society of the Culture of Inclusion. "They offer an opportunity to connect and get to know each other through common activities, and at the same time they build the foundations for a more understanding and open society of the future." We believe strongly, as a school, that learning how to work/ play with others, is as valuable a skill as learning the set Curriculum. This festival gives us the opportunity through different workshops (also run by our Year 7, 8 and 9 students) and entertainment to break down the barriers we may have between us and those with special needs.
For more information about the Festival and its organisers, please take a look at:
http://www.igrajsezmano.eu/Festival.aspx
For safety reasons all students must wear their school uniforms, tick spray would also be a good idea.
They should be dropped off at Kongresni trg, in Ljubljana at the front of the Apple store, between 8 and 8:30 am, on the following dates:
WEDNESDAY 29th May
Year 9 A & B
THURSDAY 30th May
Year 8 - bring home lunch (school lunch has been cancelled)
FRIDAY 31st May
Year 7 - bring home lunch (school lunch has been cancelled)
We will be making our own way back to school and pick up will be as normal. As some of us will be going on other trips after Igraj se z Mano, these students marked above will need to be provided with home lunch, others will have normal school lunches on their return.
At one of the workshops Secondary will be running they will be making a giant finger stitched friendship chain. In order to do this, we would love any wool from home that you may have spare. Please bring it to school and drop it at the Reception desk to pass
onto Miss Tanja Kotnik. Who knows we might make it into the Guinness Book of Records!
If there is light rain the event will still go ahead, as Igraj se z Mano organisers believe that rainy weather is just a hindrance to life, as are the disabilities that people may have, which they have to put up with everyday.
Looking forward to a wonderful time playing together.
