O Come Let Us Adore Him

Allow me to describe the cares and concerns of those

sitting near you. Do not waste time much time in trying to

tie a name to each description. What is true for us this

Second Sunday of Advent in 2017 is true every Sunday, in

every parish around the world. So reflect for a moment,

and in no particular order, upon 12 types of people. Call it

an Advent 12-step examen in preparation for the 12 Days

of Christmas. Consider:

• Those who are approaching their first Christmas after

the death of someone, whom they have dearly loved.

• Those who come to Christmas to celebrate the Word

made flesh, knowing that cancer or some other

disease has invaded their own flesh.

• Those who are, late in life, once again raising children

in their home because unless they do their

grandchildren will have no nurturing home.

• Those who, advanced in age, live in fear that this will

be their last Christmas in their own home, still able to

live life in their own way.

• Those who struggle to make Christmas something

their children will always remember but only add to

the mounting worry about bills that cannot be paid.

• Those who came to this country, desperate to find a

new life, and who now live in fear that everything

might be lost.

• Those who want to live in the freedom of Christ but

are still held captive by addiction.

• Those who try to spread holiday cheer and comfort,

all the while returning to homes where discord and

distrust hold reign.

• Those who are growing up different than others, in

communities where young people are expected to

mature in well-worn ways.

• Those who are alienated from their family and

friends, cut off from the faces meant to give them life.

• Those, who think that they are alone in struggling

with unbelief and with questions about their faith.

• Those who are not here in the parish most Sundays

because it has never been a place of comfort for them.

If a face or two has come before your mind, realize that

God has given you a gift. You have seen the suffering of

God’s cherished ones. Now it is up to you to decide how

to make this command of God into the promise of our

parish.

Comfort, O Comfort, My People

All Christians should pray regularly for all people who suffer from infirmities of every kind. But this list is intended for individuals who are acutely ill or facing surgery until they are back on the mend. Names will ordinarily be removed after 3 weeks, but if the illness persists you can call us and we will keep their names on for an additional three weeks. HOMEBOUND

THE “FOREVER” PEOPLE

OF ST ANDREW

The ones who feel like home, take care of us at our worst and applaud us at our best – the ones by our sides through every challenge and obstacle.

That’s right, I am speaking about YOU, the people of St Andrew. Fr. Jack invited me to reflect on important things that occurred during my years of service. Here are just a few:

WE Sang

Married sweethearts Buried loved ones

Celebrated sacraments Attended Journey of Faith

Cooked Youth meals Ate Vic’s salmon - even during

the time at St Charles! Prayed Taize and Prayed around the Cross

Ate the best food in the world at innumerable potluck celebrations

Disagreed-Agreed-Agreed to Disagree Lived and suffered through 9/11

Shared a truly holy pastor, father to us all Worked, laughed, cried, studied and lived

with an exceptional staff Became intentional disciples

Learned how to be church together and grew in community with one another

ALPHA Changes Everything including how seriously we need to strive to

stay in community with one another.

Please let us hear from you and often! Our house is always open. The light will be on.

Take a slip from the GIVING TREE located in the Commons. Each gift will be distributed to one of the least of Christ’s brothers and sisters:

Moms & Infants at Birth Choice

Developmentally Disabled Adults

at the Center of Family Love

Homeless People

at The City Rescue Mission

It may look like a Christmas tree, but that tree standing in the sanctuary is actually our Advent Jesse Tree. It is adorned with wonderful symbols taken from the Old Testament scriptures. Each one shows how Jesus is the long awaited Messiah—God’s anointed one.

2017 CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

Thanks to your generous gifts to the Building & Maintenance Fund we have been able to make needed improvements this past year:

• An updated all digital Audio System for the Church

• A lovely Carillon

• Replaced windows in the old office wing

• Additional chairs for Joyce Center & Classrooms

• Handicap accessible doors for Youth Center and Office Wing

• Main entrance made handicap accessible with new sliding doors

• Stage for Joyce Center

That you let us live and work, play and pray with you.

You made it possible for us to raise 4 children in the faith.

That WE spoke about God together, and listened to one

another and BELIEVED

JOURNEY OF FAITH

Wednesdays at 7pm:

December 13th & 20th

JOF is the process that primarily leads

unbaptized individuals through the Rites of Initiation which culminate with Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. It began on August 30th with the first session of the ALPHA course and continues—with breaks-- until after Easter.

JOF is also for Catholics who didn’t receive

Confirmation or Eucharist as children, or who are simply in need of updating their understanding of the faith so as to become more intentional disciples of Jesus. Finally, it is for Sponsors who will accompany all these inquirers on the Journey.

Prayer for the Homeless O God of endless mercy, in your divine plan to save us, your only son became a person like us in all things but sin. When the time came for his birth into this world his mother Mary could not find a place for this miracle to take place. Through your grace, she and Joseph came upon a spot where Jesus could safely enter into the full scope of human activity and begin to show us how to live. The homelessness of the Holy Family in that moment became a shining light to all who would follow them! It is your desire that all would have a safe and secure place to lay their heads.

During this year of grace of 2018 may we always be attentive to the needs of those who have no place to call home. May we open our hearts to help these modern-day holy families so that all parents and children will be safe and secure in their own abodes.

When Christ took flesh through the Blessed Virgin Mary, he made his home with us. We now pray that all people on the earth will have a home where Jesus may enter and bless it with his presence. May he nurture our love for each other, share in our joys, comfort us in our sorrows. Inspired by his teachings and example, may all people of the world enjoy the dignity of a home, which is, before all else, a dwelling place of God’s love, which radiates throughout the world.

We conduct this one session program for members of our parish who are planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack at least 30 days before the date you are requesting to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism. Baptisms are usually not held during Lent so if you want your child baptized before then, please plan accordingly. Child care is available upon request.
