Reflecting on the Word of God

Isaiah speaks on the blossoming forth of King Da-vid’s lineage in the one who is endowed with God’s Spirit and the good things that will come from this blossoming forth. Paul probably has this in mind when he speaks of the encouragement provided by scripture that allows our hope to endure and we as followers to continue our jour-ney toward God’s kingdom. But in the Gospel, John the Baptist take a different approach. It is as if he wants to warn his listeners that hope in the promise of a glorious future is not sufficient if we want to be a part of God’s kingdom. It seems that some of his listeners, having heard the encouragement of scripture, were presuming that simply being descendants of Abraham was enough to assure them a place in God’s kingdom. To them, John issues a stern warning, and it is one that we should heed as well: we must repent so that our lives might be like trees bearing good fruit.

San Francisco. I congratulate and thank the school parents and co-directors Aideen Campbell and Yoly Pantig for meticulously organizing this fabulous and fun event. Over 200 participants registered, with prizes awarded to those who finished first in the Women, Men, Youth-girl, and Youth-boy categories. SVCS families and friends gathered at the start line as participants set out on the run/walk and cheered as they crossed the finish line. Goodie bags, fin-ishers ribbon, t-shirts, and a sense of great accomplishment were also enjoyed by each participant. Healthy snacks and beverages generously donated by the event’s many spon-sors were much appreciated. I had registered to attend this event, but with my Saturday morning Mass commitment, I couldn’t. I’m delighted at how successful this event was. Many volunteers gave their time and talents for this event. Proceeds raised are to benefit the advancement of class-room technology (iPads/computers) at Saint Veronica Catholic School. Well done, Aideen & Yoly!

Word of God this Sunday: This second Sunday of Ad-vent, the Word of God invites us to look at the new things that will happen when God comes into our lives. Isaiah’s reading gives the beautiful images: the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox…” Impossible and incredible things can happen with God on our side. The letter to the Romans encourages to “think in harmony with one another.” The gospel reading has John the Baptist prepare the way for Jesus by preaching in the Jordan valley. Repentance and reconciliation are themes highlighted in these readings. We can think about preparing ourselves for Christmas by making decisions about living in harmony with others and changing the ways that are not related to our health, happi-ness, and peace.

Wedding Humor: A young couple came into the pastor’s office to fill out the prenuptial-questions form. The young man had never talked to a priest before and was nervous, so the pastor tried to put him at ease. When they came to the question, “Are you entering this marriage of your own free will?” there was a long pause. Finally, his fiancée looked at the young man and said, “Put down ‘yes.’”

A pastor received the following thank-you note from a newlywed in his congregation: “Dear Father: I want to thank you for performing our marriage ceremony. It was beautiful the way you brought my happiness to conclu-sion.”

Your Friend & Pastor,

Father Charles Puthota

Dear Parishioners, Advent: "You keep us waiting. You, the God of all time, want us to wait. For the right time in which to discover who we are, where we are to go, who will be with us, and what we must do. So thank you … for the waiting time" (John Bell). Waiting is part of life, isn’t it? We wait for everything in life. We do not achieve anything important without waiting for it. We wait for love, peace, growth, results, for a journey, a destina-tion, for health, happiness, for reconciliation---and for God. Waiting intensifies our desire and purifies our motives.

Advent is a special time when we slow our pace and get in touch with ourselves and listen a bit more atten-tively to life and love. As we wait for God’s coming, in the midst of shopping, decorating, and other Christ-mas preoccupations, we’ll do well to keep hope alive for the deepest desires and longings. This holy season lasting about three and a half weeks helps us get in touch with the true meaning of Christmas. As we wait for Christmas, what is it really that we want in life? What are we hoping for? What are our three most pre-cious wishes? If it is genuinely for our happiness and fulfillment, we can be sure God in Jesus Christ is go-ing to grant them for us because God is looking out for our happiness and fulfillment. Let’s create the space and time for taking in the meaning and mystery of this season of Advent. As someone has said, “Let's ap-proach Christmas with an expectant hush, rather than a last-minute rush.”

Immaculate Conception: As you know, December 08th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation. But this year as it falls on a Sunday, the feast is moved to December 09, and it will not be a day of obligation. We love, esteem, and honor Mary our mother. We think of the mystery of Mary’s glory as connected with Advent. Because Jesus was coming into the world, his mother Mary had to be prepared right from the moment of her conception, that is, when Mary was conceived in her mother Anne’s womb. Mary was protected from any tainting of sin because she had to give birth to the Son of God. This is the belief that we celebrate in the Immaculate Conception. William Wordsworth celebrates it in his poem “The Virgin”: “Mother! whose virgin bosom was uncrost /With the least shade of thought to sin allied; /Woman! above all women glorified, / Our tainted nature's soli-tary boast…”

5K Run / Walk: Saint Veronica Catholic School (SVCS) held its first annual Thanksgiving 5K Run/Walk on Nov.23, 2013 at Oyster Point Marina in So.
