Second Sunday of Advent December 8, 2019
FAMILY PRAYER AROUND THE ADVENT WREATH Second Week—(2 Purple candles.)
In the name of the Father of the Son and the Holy Spirit.
O Emmanuel, Jesus Christ, desire of every nation,
Savior of all peoples, come and dwell among us.
Jesus Christ is our peace.
He is the Prince of Peace, and the fruit of His presence is
peace. Christ comes to bring justice, wholeness, and
harmony to every relationship throughout all creation. He
wants to continually grant us peace in every situation.
Jesus, we pray, guide our feet into the path of peace. Amen.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS
Today Sunday, December 8
Support elderly religious.
Across the United States, hundreds of
religious communities lack financial
resources sufficient to meet the
retirement and health-care needs of
aging members.
Many elder religious worked for years
for small stipends, leaving a large gap
in retirement savings. At the same
time, fewer religious are able to serve
in compensated ministry.
Like many Americans, religious
communities face the monumental
challenge of funding eldercare.
Changing Demographics
By 2029, retired religious are
projected to outnumber wage-earners
by nearly three to one.
SAINT JUAN DIEGO (1474-1548) December 9 How well Mary’s own words describe Juan Diego: “God has cast down the
mighty from their thrones and lifted up
the lowly” (Luke 1:52). Through him,
for the diverse peoples of the Americas,
indigenous and immigrant, the Mother
of God became known as their Mother,
too. Cuauhtlatzin, his given name,
means “One Who Speaks Like an Ea-
gle,” and Juan Diego faithfully deliv-
ered the Virgin’s request that a church
be built at Tepeyac where she had ap-
peared to him. To the skeptical bish-op’s request for a sign, Our Lady
showed Juan Diego roses blooming
through stony ground, despite winter’s
cold. When he unfolded his tilma to
present them to the bishop, imprinted
there was Mary’s image! Her blue sash
and the flower over her womb were
traditional Aztec symbols of pregnancy
and new life. But her features were
those of a mestiza, indicating mixed
Aztec-European heritage. Thus to peo-ples too easily prone to a “clash of cul-
tures,” Our Lady of Guadalupe remains
the enduring icon of unity-in-diversity,
the fruit of our one baptism into Jesus,
her Son.

New bible study on the Book of Job starting on Thursday, Nov.
21st (You are welcome to join us even if we have started already) The book of Job tells the story of a righteous man who
is overwhelmed by suffering and complains to God until God
comes to speak with him. In an age where suffering was seen as
a sign of punishment for sin, Job's suffering is doubled when all
his friends impugn his character as they witness his sorrows.
Listen to God's Word in the midst of pain. For enrollment and to
secure a study set for Job call Dr. Neil Fanning:805-217-4300.
Study is held at St. Rose of Lima School in room 8 at 7pm on
Thursday evenings. For more info call Dr. Neil Fanning at

DID YOU KNOW?
Practice situational awareness as part of your holiday travel plans
At Christmastime, families come together to spend this blessed
season surrounded by their loved ones, and for many families, this
involves some travel. Parents with young children who are hitting
the roads or the airways should be practicing situational awareness
to ensure their children’s safety. Situational awareness means
staying alert and knowing what’s going on around you. Keep an
eye out for suspicious activity, and know where your family
members are at all times. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by your phone or other electronics—it only takes a minute for a
child to disappear from your eyesight. For more holiday travel tips,
visit http://www.catholic.org/travel/story.php?id=65521.

¿Sabia Usted?
