Second Sunday in Advent

Good stewards believe that God, who has begun this good work in them, will carry it through to completion. In words and deeds, they can sing with the psalmist, "The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy!"

Dear Fellow Members of Holy Trinity: We cannot be closer to the Lord than in the Eucharist, in Communion and in Eucharistic Adoration. Blessed Pope Paul VI and Pope St. John Paul II have given us many reasons to spend a Holy Hour in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Here are a dozen.

1. You have an invitation from Jesus. “Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love.” John Paul II in Doninicae Canae.2. You are needed! “The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic adoration.” John Paul II in Dominicae Canae.3. The Eucharist is the center of your life. “Every member of the Church must be vigilant in seeing that the sacrament of love shall be at the center of the life of the people of God so that through all the manifestations of worship due him shall be given back ‘love for love’ and truly become the life of our souls.” John Paul II in Redemptor Hominis.4. Your hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament will repair for evils of the world and bring about peace on earth. “Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Jesus and ready to make reparation for the great evils of the world. Let your adoration never cease.” John Paul II in Dominicae Canae.5. Day and night Jesus dwells in the Blessed Sacrament because you are the most important person in the world to him. “Christ is reserved in our churches as the spiritual center of the heart of the community, the universal Church and all humanity, since within the veil of the species, Christ is contained, the invisible heart of the Church, the Redeemer of the world, the center of all hearts, by him all things are and of whom we exist.” Paul VI in Mysterium fidei.6. Jesus wants you to do more than to go to Mass on Sunday. “Our communal worship at Mass must go together with our personal worship of Jesus in Eucharistic adoration in order that our love may be complete.” John Paul II in Redemptor Hominis.7. You grow spiritually with each moment you spend with Jesus! “Our essential commitment in life is to preserve and advance constantly in Eucharistic life and Eucharistic piety and to grow spiritually in the climate of the Holy Eucharist.” John Paul II in Redemptor Hominis.8. The best time you spend on earth is with Jesus, your best friend. “How great is the value of conversation with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, for there is nothing more consoling on earth, nothing more efficacious for advancing along the road of holiness.” Paul VI in Mysterium Fidei.9. You can’t be exposed to the Blessed Sacrament without receiving the divine rays of his grace, love, and peace. “Christ is truly the Emmanuel, that is, God with us, day and night, he is in our midst. He restores morality, nourishes virtue, consoles the afflicted, strengthens the weak.” Paul VI in Mysterium Fidei.10. If Jesus were fully visible in church, all would run to him. But he is visible and present in the host because he is calling us in faith. “The Blessed Sacrament is the ‘Living Heart’ of each of our churches and it is our sweet duty to honor and adore the Blessed Host, which our eyes see, the Incarnate Word, whom they cannot see.” Paul VI in Solemni Hac Liturgia.11. Jesus makes our heart one with his. “He proposes his own example to those who come to him, that all may learn to be like himself, gentle and humble of heart.” Paul VI in Mysterium Fidei.12. If the pope himself gave you a special invitation to visit him in the Vatican, it would be as nothing compared to the honor and dignity Jesus himself bestows upon you with the invitation to spend an hour with him in the Blessed Sacrament. “The divine Eucharist bestows upon the Christian people the incomparable dignity.” Paul VI in Mysterium Fidei. Fr. Patrick

Prayers for the Week Jesus, baptize me in repentance. Send the Spirit to search my heart. May I repent on the deepest level. Immaculate May, I accept your advice to do whatever Jesus tells me. "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse

to thee." Jesus, make me as open to Your mother as was Elizabeth. Father, keep me on the holy highway. Father, may I always "strive to enter into Your rest" and thus find Your strength.

Heifer International (www.heifer.com) During Advent, the Knights of Columbus offer parishioners an opportunity to permanently and progressively help poor families become self-reliant. Your donations thru Ark Banks and Catalog Purchases enable H.I. to give food and income-producing animals to those in need. The receiving family is required to pass on a gift animal’s offspring to another family. Your gift is not a “hand-out”, but a “hand-up” and it keeps on giving. Please pick up an Ark Bank and Catalog in the narthex throughout Advent. Please write your check to Heifer Int'l.

Poinsettias-A tradition at Holy Trinity is for parishioners to purchase a poinsettia(s) in honor of, or in memory of a loved one. Second Week of Advent Father, in the wilderness of the Jordan you sent a messenger to prepare people's hearts for the coming of

your Son. Help me to hear his words and repent of my sins, so that I may clearly see the way to walk, the truth to speak, and the life to live for Him, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Birthday presents for Jesus--you can present Jesus with these birthday gifts during Advent: Attend Mass during the week; Go to confession; Call someone who might be lonely; Write a letter or note to someone who is hurting or forgotten; Decide to forgive someone; “Buy” an animal from Heifer International; Invite someone to church; Pray for someone you don’t like; Visit an old person or someone who is alone; and Read a spiritual book.

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Official Catholic accounts state that on the morning of December 9, 1531, a native American peasant named Juan Diego saw a vision of a maiden at a place called the Hill of Tepeyac, which would become part of Villa de Guadalupe, a suburb of Mexico City, Mexico. Speaking to him in his native Nahuatl language (the language of the Aztec empire), the maiden identified herself as the Virgin Mary, "mother of the very true deity" and asked for a church to be built at that site in her honor. From her words, Juan Diego then sought out the archbishop of Mexico City, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, to tell him what had happened. The archbishop instructed him to return to Tepeyac Hill, and ask the lady for a miraculous sign to prove her identity. The first sign she gave was the healing of Juan's uncle. The Virgin also told Juan to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill, which was normally barren, especially in December. But Juan followed her instructions and he found Castilian roses, not native to Mexico,

blooming there. Juan arranged the flowers in his tilma, or cloak, and when Juan Diego opened his cloak before archbishop Zumárraga on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and on the fabric was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Juan Diego was

canonized in 2002, under the name Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin.

Saturday, December 12 we will hold a procession in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe followed by a gathering in Whitman Hall. The procession will start at 5am in the parking lot so bring a flashlight. Please bring a breakfast dish to share.

Home Campaign: This weekend marks our “Commitment Weekend” for the Home Campaign. For those of you we have missed or who haven’t yet taken an opportunity to make a pledge or gift to the campaign, this weekend is your opportunity to be a part of our success. Here at Holy Trinity Church we have received $128,100 in gifts and pledges from 100 parish families. While we celebrate those gifts and thank all of those who have responded to our campaign volunteers, phone calls and mailings, we continue to seek everyone’s help as we look to reach our parish goal.    We are hopeful that you were able to fill out the pledge form in your pew today. If you were unable to commit to a pledge today, it’s never too late to join in. Simply contact the parish office when you want to be a part of supporting our parish through a sacrificial gift to this campaign. You can also make a secure online donation at the campaign website www.thehomecampaign.org  Every gift, no matter the size, will make an impact on our parish and our Diocese. Thank you, once again, to everyone who has been a part of this important effort!

Advent Meditation O Jesus, in an empty desert your prophet John proclaimed: God is here, at your side. God has come to bring about a kingdom where injustice and suffering will be no more, where tears will be wiped away, and where those who turn to God will feast at a banquet. "Turn now, your God is standing at your side. Reform your lives, God's kingdom is at hand." In an empty desert John said these things. Give me faith like John's, O Lord, strong enough to believe even in a desert that you and your kingdom are no farther from me than my hand. Make my heart strong like his, not swayed by trials or snared by false pleasures. Give me courage to be faithful until your promises are fulfilled. O King of all nations, Jesus Christ, only joy of every heart, come and save your people.
