UnPlanned Movie, Sunday, March 22, 2020 1 p.m. The Great Hall, Free. UnPlanned is a story of redemption, not unlike that of St. Paul. God moves the heart of a highly motivated, but totally misguided soul. It is the true story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director and "employee of the year" who unveils the truth about the abortion industry’s lies and lures after her own eyes are opened by an unexpected, 'unplanned' expe-rience. This movie is rated R but contains no gratuitous violence, sex, bad language or inap-propriate scenes. Minors may attend with parents or with signed consent. There are no aborted babies shown, only the "suggestion." An excellent story of redemption. Light lunch will be served. Donations welcome. Limited childcare on a first reserved basis. RSVP https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0549ACA728A1F58-unplanned or email [email protected] or713.447.7141

One family The theme of the 2020 Bishop’s Appeal is Isaiah 61:2 "To proclaim a year of the Lord's favor" As Bishop Lopes explained in his letter to the faithful asking for support for the appeal, we have a lot to be excited about in this Jubilee year of Anglicanorum coetibus, as we look forward we continue to work hard to strengthen our communities, provide solid formation for our future priests, and bolster the structural and admin-istrative foundation for our diocese to sup-port our Parishes and clergy into the future. Can you respond to God’s unreserved gener-osity towards the Ordinariate with a gift to the appeal this Lent? Pledge cards and enve-lopes are available in the church or you can donate online at ordinariate.net/bishops-appeal. (Gifts should be made payable to the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter.) Thank you for your generosity.

Alleluia Silenced

If any one word could be said to sum up the Sacred Liturgy, that word would be Alleluia.

Derived from the Hebrew expression Hallelu-Yah, meaning “Praise the Lord,” this ancient

cry of jubilation became for the early Church the distinctive acclamation of joy in the Pas-

chal mystery: “Alleluia, He is risen.”

Until the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great, the Alleluia was restricted to the celebration

of Easter, but it quickly spread to herald the Gospel at nearly every Mass and to announce

all the hours of the Divine Office. No other word so emphatically accompanies the faithful

through the year and so distinctly stamps the Christian life with the seal of joy and confi-

dence in the victory of the Resurrection. Even so, Alleluia goes silent in Lent and disap-

pears from the Church’s round of prayer from Ash Wednesday until the Easter Vigil.

Though we continue to rejoice in the Resurrection and while every Sunday, even those in

Lent, celebrates “a little Easter,” we shroud our joy in mourning just as we veil images and

statuary throughout this season of penance.

In traditional Roman usage, Alleluia was discontinued some seventy days before Easter,

from Septuagesima on, and thus the penitential season was drawn out to evoke the seventy-

year captivity of the Jews as a time of suffering for sin. According to William Durandus,

the great medieval liturgist, “We desist from saying Alleluia, the song chanted by angels,

because we have been excluded from the company of the angels on account of Adam’s sin.

In the Babylon of our earthly life we sit by the streams, weeping as we remember Sion. For

as the children of Israel in an alien land hung their harps upon the willows, so we too must

forget the Alleluia song in the season of sadness, of penance, and bitterness of heart.”

In medieval England, it was common on Septuagesima Sunday to “bury the Alleluia”: the

word would be inscribed on parchment, locked in a casket, and ritually buried in the crypt,

there to await in darkness and silence its rebirth from the dead at Easter.
