Before I began attending Wilshire, I never attended a church that used the hymnal for worship. Attending other churches here and there, I learned some of the classics like “Jesus Paid it All” and “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” but never much beyond those. Now at Wilshire each week, I am offered something new about God through the lyrics of the hymns we sing — lyrics I never have seen nor heard. It is one of my favorite parts of worship.

For you who have been in the church your whole lives, I’m sure many of our hymns you’ve heard dozens, if not hundreds of times. I venture to guess some of them may even have lost their meaning, their shine, their impact. Perhaps in singing some of those more common, you find yourself drifting into distraction, only to be brought back by Doug’s gesturing to return to our seats.

This week in worship, we sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Although it may be familiar to you, take a moment to meditate this morning on the lyrics to this tune:

What a friend we have in JesusAll our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carryEverything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,O what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carryEverything to God in prayer!

I invite you this morning to reflect on the state of your heart, soul and mind. What needless pain do you carry with you into our time of worship? Are you forfeiting peace by keeping your burdens to yourself, instead of sharing them with the friend you have in God? The hymn reminds us that God wants our everything — both the overwhelming and the insignificant. In this time of worship, I pray you take the image of God as friend to heart. Know that God is near to you, knows you intimately and offers what you need, be it an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on or someone simply to be present with you.

Would you join me in this prayer?God, thank you for being my friend. A faithful

and present listener, giver of wisdom and comfort. I invite you to spend the next hour with me, enjoying a time of fellowship together. Help me to see this hour as a time to experience the joyful presence of a friend. Amen.

Reading — Psalm 36:5–10 Gayle Lawson / Alecia Hill

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. O continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your salvation to the upright of heart!

Anthem Abide with Me JohnsonSanctuary Choir

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide. The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day, earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away.Change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need thy presence ev’ry passing hour. What but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud or sunshine, Lord, abide with me!

I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears, no bitterness.Where is death’s sting, where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me.

Giving of Tithes and Offerings

During the month of January, we call attention to the blessings of giving generously even in death through legacy gifts and estate planning. With just a little bit of planning, each of us has the potential to leave a tithe (or more) of our estates to continue God’s work through Wilshire. But this is a decision that has to be made in advance. Would you consider taking action this month to include a legacy gift to Wilshire’s ministry in your will or by another means? +Gospel Reading — John 2:1–11 Rachel Murphy / Britt McClung

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the

brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Annual Church Conference

Wilshire’s Annual Church Conference will be held today at noon in Community Hall. This is the once-a-year time for the church to gather to hear updates on our shared ministries and approve the annual budget, committee nominations and deacon nominations, along with any other business to come before the church. Lunch will be served. No reservation is needed; just show up.

Wingfield anniversary celebration

Today we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mark Wingfield’s work among us as associate pastor. Come to the Annual Church Conference for more on the recognition of this milestone.

This Wednesday at Wilshire

The full range of Wednesday programs is back for the new year. Senior adults are invited to sing with New Song on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Lunch is served at Koinonia Café beginning at 11 a.m., followed by Bible study at noon. Dinner in Koinonia Café is served beginning at 5 p.m., followed by programs for preschoolers, children, youth and adults.

Joy: A Study of Philippians

A three-week study of the book of Philippians is currently offered by the pastoral residents on Wednesday nights through Jan. 30. The class meets in Room 1205-G at 6 p.m. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Few verses in Paul’s letters are as oft-quoted as this one from Philippians. But what does it mean? What’s the context? Come explore the book of Philippians. Farm-to-Table class

Leanna Coyle-Carr will facilitate a two-week class about the farm-to-table movement on Wednesday evenings, Jan. 23 and 30, at 6 p.m. in Room

1205-L. “Farm-to-table” is a phrase indicating that the food on the table came directly from a specific farm or a local farm or garden. This movement focuses on eating and supporting food that is grown close to where you live. Does it make sense to adopt this practice? Does it make a difference where we buy our food? What about what we put in our bodies? How can the table and a simple meal help us find more community? Participants will have practical discussions about the sacredness of an ordinary meal and thoughtful discussions on this farm-to-table idea.

Deacon ordination

Wilshire’s annual deacon ordination will be held during worship next Sunday morning, Jan. 27. Five members have been nominated for ordination to deacon service: Allison Brown, Linda Imhoof, Richard Luttrell, Jon-Erik Schoellhorn and Alison Wingfield. Nine ordained deacons have been nominated to new three-year terms of service: Pat Austin, Carol Cabaniss, Bob Coleman, Craig Keith, Kenton Keller, Michael Moorhead, Shaeron Moorhead, Hank Thompson, Everett Williams.

Year-end financials

When the books closed on Wilshire’s 2018 Unified Budget, a total of $4,183,713 had been given toward the budget goal of $4,200,000. That represents just a $16,287 gap between income and budget for the year. Expenses for the year were held to $4,032,692, which created an overage of income to expenses of $151,021. The Finance Committee last week assigned those funds in the following ways: $52,000 to the Personnel Committee for one-time staff bonuses given in lieu of 2019 salary increases; $20,000 to the Missions Plus Fund; $20,000 to the Vision 20/20 Sustain Team for stewardship projects; $8,000 to supplement the Bereavement Fund; and $51,000 designated for cash reserves. The full financial report will be given at the Annual Church Conference today.

2019 budget proposed

The Finance Committee has proposed a $4.25 million Unified Budget for 2019, a $50,000 increase from 2018. The full budget will be presented and discussed at today’s Annual Church Conference. One priority of this year’s budget for the Personnel Committee and Finance Committee was to create a $15-per-hour minimum wage for all the church’s full-time hourly workers. Learn more at the Annual Church Conference.
