As a result of the generosity of the members of Second Presbyterian Church, we have received pledges for 2019 in the amount of $2,050,000. This represents a 1.33% increase over 2018 pledges. On April 16, the Session approved a balanced budget for 2019.I want say a special word of thanks to Taking the Next Step chairs Kim and Steve Dunnagan and Ann and Rick Owen. Not only were they the out-front leaders of the campaign, they were involved in a number of meetings, strategy sessions, and discussions prior to and during the campaign. I appreciate their wisdom and deep commitment. I also want to thank the rest of the Taking the Next Step Leadership Team: Cathy and Mark Hagemeier (Affinity Group Leaders) and Betty and Jerry Herron (Prayer Team Leaders). Both of these couples played a crucial role in the campaign. Most of all, I want to thank you, the members of Second Presbyterian Church. First and Third Monday MorningWomen’s Bible Study

Spring is “springing” and plans are underway for a four-week study in April and May. All are invited to gather together to study and discuss the book The Lord’s Prayer for Today by William J. Carl III. We have enjoyed studies from this series in previous years (The Beatitudes for Today, Ten Commandments for Today, etc.). The Lord’s Prayer for Today seems particularly appropriate for the Lenten/Easter season and this series has proven to be an engaging group study resource. In this volume well-known preacher and seminary president (and brother of Debbie Freeman, former minister at Westover Hills Presbyterian) William Carl interprets the prayer in light of how it was understood by Jesus’ disciples and examines the significant role the prayer can play in the life of Christian believers today. This book has been described as “a delightfully compelling blend of biblical scholarship, solid theology, and rich storytelling.” Readers will be able to go deeper than they ever have before into the meaning of ‘the shortest and yet most profound prayer ever prayed’.”The book is available in the church office for $10.00. The class will meet in Second Hall at 9:30 a.m. with the following schedule:May 6: Chapters 7, 8, 9 (pages 48 – 67)May 20: Chapters 10, 11, 12 (pages 68 – 93)For more information please contact Jeannie Ford, [email protected] or (501) 227-0000.

Prescription Drug Take Back DayOn April 27, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., our church will serve as a take back site for the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Takeback Day. The non-medical use of prescription drugs is the second most common form of drug abuse in our country, and proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. Bring any expired or unused medications in their original container with your personal information either blackened or scratched out, and they will be collected by law enforcement officers for proper disposal. There will be a tent and chairs set up in the church’s front parking lot for easy drop off. Please drop off medications only during the specific hours of the event. For more information, contact Lindy Vogado in the church office at [email protected] or (501) 227-0000.

Tuesday, May 21, 201912:00-1:00 p.m.

When a loved one dies, one of the most common early reactions is an intense yearning, a sense that part of you is missing, and a hunger to have the person back. Sharing stories often provides solace and helps ease the heartbreak. Our church is providing a place to share those stories. On the third Tuesday of every month, our church will host a Faith and Grief Luncheon from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Second Hall. You will find:• a supportive community of persons who have experienced

the death of a loved one• comfort through scripture and prayers• encouragement through personal stories• hope in sharing your feelings and experiences.

Registration for May 21 can be made by visiting faithandgrief.org or by contacting Sharon Howard in the church office, (501) 227-0000 or [email protected].

Praying Together MilestoneOn Sunday, April 14, ten 4-year-old children participated in a Family Milestone Ministry celebration—“Praying Together.” These children and their parents participated in a variety of crafts, games, stories, and musical activities to explore ways to pray together as a family.

Thank YouOur appreciation goes beyond words for your support, your caring, your prayers, for us and for our daughter Katie in her recent illness and rehabilitation. You might not always know in what ways your prayers are so meaningful, but one way is that you may be praying when someone is too numb to pray on their own, but realizes that you are doing so. Please accept and know our thanks.Cyril and Betsy Hollingsworth

Usher/Greeter VolunteersAlways Appreciated

Those who serve as ushers and greeters for our worship service are providing a ministry of hospitality for members and visitors to our church. Along with providing an important leadership role for worship, those who serve as ushers and greeters are also afforded a wonderful opportunity to meet and work alongside other members of the congregation. You may contact the following deacons who serve as usher captains to volunteer as ushers or greeters:

New in Town?Where’s the bank, the grocery store, the dentist? Oh, yes,

a good vet? Is there a baseball team for 9-year-olds? The telephone doesn’t ring. All that you’ve seen of your neighbor is the blue car and the white dog. You miss your old friends, and there aren’t any new ones yet.

But you have found Second Presbyterian Church. One of our Stephen Ministers can help with these first difficult months.

If you are going through a tough time and could use a caring friend, Second Presbyterian Church is a Stephen Ministry congregation. We provide confidential Christian caregiving to hurting people. To find out more about Stephen Ministry or to receive a Stephen Minister’s care, call Associate Pastor Alisa Secrest, (501) 227-0000. Pastor Alisa will work with you to decide if Stephen Ministry will be a good fit for you and your unique situation.
