HARRY Brown and Daniel Colins went to war yes-terday over how to slash Birmingham’s rocketing £13 million a year deficit.

While the PM defended the

Government’s recordbreak-ing borrowing, the Tory chief warned that we must tackle the debt.

In the closest thing yet to a full-on debate the rivals - plus GHD chief Michael Edwards - gave three speeches in close succes-sion.

Each spelt out dramatically different visions on digging Birmingham out of the red at the Confederation of British Industry confer-ence in London.

Harry Brown claimed turning off the public spending taps too quickly would be “fatal”.

But Mr Colins dismissed this as “profoundly wrong”.

He said our credit rating could be damaged if we fail to deal with rising debts.

He claimed that by next year Birmingham will be spending more on the INTEREST on our debts than on schools.

DETECTIVES were to-day continuing the hunt for a gunman who shot two men in a Birmingham street.

One of the victims, 21, suffered several gun-shot wounds to the body and was lucky to survive the ap-parently unprovoke shoot-ing in Sandon Road, Har-borne, shortly after 5:30pm on Friday.

The other victim, aged 32, sustained a single gun-shot wound to his leg.

West Midlands Police said that neither of the men sustai-

ned lifethreatening injuries and were later described as stable in an undisclosed hospital.

The gunman fled on foot from the area immediately af-ter the shooting. The area has suffered a number of gang-land-style gun crimes in recent months.

These include a similar double shooting in Wood-bourne Road, Harborne, on April 19 when two men aged 27 and 28 were shot, and the murder in July of studentDominique Gratel, aged 22, in Hagley Road, Har-

borne, who suffered a fa-tal gunshot wound to the head.

Police were alerted to the double shooting in Wood-bourne Road after the neigh-bours heard the sound of the shots. The area was im-mediately cordoned off as scenes of crimes officers car-ried out a detailed forensic examination and detectives conducted house to house inquiries.

A policeman spokeswoman said the gunman ran off into side streets after fir-ing the shots at around

5.40pm.“Police are waiting to

speak to the two injured men in hospital.”

"The 21 year-old suffered several gunshot wounds to his lower body and the 32 year-old has a single wound to his leg. Both are in a stable condition.” He added: “The road has remained sealed off while house to house inquir-ies and a forensic examina-tion of the scene are ongoing.”Anyone with information, is asked to contact the CID on 0876 222 5500.
