Phonics You already know that the /f/ sound is made with a single f, like in the word filter. You have also learned that when the letter f immediately follows a short vowel sound, it is usually spelled with ff. This week you are going to learn that another way to make the sound /f/ is with ph. When the letters p and h are together, they may make the /f/ sound. Examples of this are:

dolphin

elephant

telephone

trophy

▪ Use the ph and gh word fluency page and read lines 1 – 4 aloud. ▪ Which words have to do with school? [phonics, physics, alphabet, staff] ▪ Which words have to do with people? [nephew, orphan] ▪ Which word is another word for a drugstore? [pharmacy] ▪ Which words are used for communicating? [telephone, microphone, alphabet]

Reading You have learned that while reading informational text, readers pay attention to key details.  Today, you are going to practice finding key details and then naming the main topic.  The main topic is what the passage or text is mostly about, and it usually is just a word or two. The key details relate to the main topic.  One way to remember the key details and to connect them to the main topic is to talk across your hand.  For each finger, you can retell a key detail.  The main topic is the palm of your hand.

Read the passage Levers and Pulleys by Julian Green. While you are reading, keep track of the key details.  Then, talk about the main topic and the key details by talking across your hand.

1 What is a machine? You might think it’s something

that has a motor. But a machine is any tool that

helps us move things. Two simple machines are levers

and pulleys.

2 A lever is made of a solid bar and a fulcrum. The

fulcrum is the spot that the bar rests on. It is close to the

object you are lifting. When one end of the bar goes

down, the other end goes up, like a seesaw. If one end of

the bar is longer than the other, it can be used to lift an

object. The object is called the load. With a long, strong

lever, you can lift really heavy loads.

3 A pulley is another kind of machine. It can also be

used to lift a load. It is made of a rope and a wheel.

The rope passes over the wheel. When you pull down

on one end of the rope, the other end goes up. If

something is tied to the rope, it goes up, too. You might

have window blinds that work this way.

4 Machines like these have been used for

thousands of years. Many of today’s biggest

machines are still based on levers and pulleys.

Brief Description Hello Second Grade Artists! Today you will be creating a cityscape that uses stamping to create an image. You will need paper, a pencil, paint or markers and something to stamp with. The instructions will use Lego bricks, but you can use things like a fork, marker caps, or other small pieces of plastic. Paper towel or toilet paper cardboard tubes, drink lids or other container lids will also work.

What is a cityscape?

A cityscape is an artwork that shows groups of large buildings.

Here is a photograph of Atlanta, for inspiration:

And here is a cityscape painting by artist George Copeland Ault,

called From Brooklyn Heights from 1925.

Page 17: Second Grade - fultonschools.org · 2021. 2. 23. · Second Grade Art Lesson-Week 28 Standards VA2.CR.2 Create works of art based on selected themes. b. Create works of art emphasizing

Cityscape artists use the space in their artworks to make them look more realistic.

Notice the way the artist used overlapping to show that some of the buildings and

other objects were closer to us and some are farther away. Objects that are near

the bottom of the painting are larger and more colorful. That makes them look

closer, also. Look for the horizon line that shows where the sky and the farthest

away buildings meet.

A few weeks ago, you created a print by using a piece of foil. This week, you will

be using stamping in a printmaking process. With this stamping, you will create

the lines and shapes that will come together to create your cityscape.

Begin by practicing stamping with your plastic objects. You can dip the objects in

paint if you have some. Or color them with markers. While the paint or markers

are still wet, turn the plastic object over and stamp with it on the paper.

Page 18: Second Grade - fultonschools.org · 2021. 2. 23. · Second Grade Art Lesson-Week 28 Standards VA2.CR.2 Create works of art based on selected themes. b. Create works of art emphasizing

Now get ready to stamp on your good paper. Use the Lego bricks or other objects

to create larger buildings near the front of your landscape. This is closer to the

bottom of your paper. Create rectangles and squares.

Use can use the Lego bricks in combination with each other to make larger

rectangles for buildings too. Use the smaller Legos to stamp smaller buildings

near the middle of your paper and then even smaller ones closer to the top.

Page 19: Second Grade - fultonschools.org · 2021. 2. 23. · Second Grade Art Lesson-Week 28 Standards VA2.CR.2 Create works of art based on selected themes. b. Create works of art emphasizing

Do you have some objects that stamp other shapes? A marker cap makes a great

sun or moon.

Now use a pencil to add details. You can create a road, a river, or mountains.

Decide if it is night or day and add a moon or sun and some clouds if you would

like.

Continue adding details and then add color.

Phonics You have learned several ways to make the /f/ sound. Today you are going to learn that another way to make the /f/ sound is with the letters ‘gh’. An example is the word laugh. ▪ Use the ph and gh word fluency page and read lines 5 – 8 aloud. ▪ Which words are sounds you might make? [cough, laugh] ▪ Which word has to do with transportation? [traffic] ▪ Which word has to do with animals? [gopher] ▪ Which word might be found in the kitchen? [muffin]

Reading When you read, pictures and other images can be as important as words. They can support, or help explain, information in the text. Diagrams are drawings that show the different parts of something. They can also show how something works. ▪ Reread the passage titled, Levers and Pulleys by Julian Green. ▪ What does the diagram (drawing) help you understand about incline planes that the text didn’t tell you?

Writing Writers, you have been hard at work for the last several weeks doing informational writing. You have:

▪ Brainstormed topics you know a lot about. ▪ Added facts and details to tell more information about your topic. ▪ Provided your reader with more information by using precise language. (For example--if am writing about things animals eat, I might use the terms herbivore and carnivore to better describe their diet.)

Today, you are going to have another opportunity to elaborate or add even more information about your topic. One strategy for elaborating is this:

▪ Reread what you have written. ▪ As you read, find a place (or even two!) where you have a question, or your reader may have a question. Draw a star right at that spot. ▪ Jot the question down on the paper or a post-it that you attach right on your writing piece. ▪ Write an answer to the question right where you drew the star. You just elaborated and told your reader even more information!

Grab the writing piece you worked on last week or another informational piece you have written. Try this strategy and find 2 spots to elaborate. Want an extra challenge? Find 2 more spots to elaborate. Special note: Is your writing starting to look a little messy with all this elaborating you are doing? Good! That’s how writers work!! Their writing has sentences and words added and crossed out. It is ok! You are working to make your writing even better than it started out!

Social Studies - Grade 2

Wednesday

Step 1: Read the following passage.

Native Americans and Bartering Adapted from K12 Reader

Early Native American groups lived in different cultural regions.

Their environments had different resources. Each group specialized

in making particular products or developing certain skills, based on

their resources. As they

perfected their techniques,

something exciting began to

happen. For the first time in

their tribes’ history, they

had a surplus of materials. They had enough to meet

their own needs with some left over. The conditions

were perfect for an economy to develop. In an

economy, goods, services and often money are

organized into a system to manage those resources.

Native American groups began to work with each

other to simplify their work and share items they wanted or needed. They began to barter as

they began to interact with each other. Bartering is trading goods or services directly for

other goods or services rather than using any form of money. Having the ability to barter with

other tribes meant that it was easier on all the groups. No one group had to work as hard to

make or find everything they needed for survival.

Native American tribes would often travel long distances for the opportunity to trade with each

other. In between trading times, they would gather or create surplus products. They set things

aside especially for the purpose of bartering with other tribes at their trade meetings.

An additional benefit of trading between cultural regions was the

ability to enjoy products that were impossible to make with the

resources in the tribe’s home territory. Tribal members of the

Desert Southwest region wanted tools fashioned from whalebone.

There is no whalebone available in the desert. However, they could

get it from the tribes of the Pacific Northwest region, who had

access to resources found on the beach or in the sea.

Some people still use bartering today to get the things they need or want. For example, you

might offer to do the dishes for your brother if he will take you to the movies. Especially in

tough economic times, people return to this age-old way of getting things that they need. We

will probably always have some form of money, but we don’t always have to use it.

Phonics Cut out the word cards from the ph and gh word fluency page. You will be sorting the cards. To sort the cards: ▪ Choose a card. ▪ Read the word aloud. ▪ Put it in a category. ▪ Once you have at least 3 words in each category, read the words aloud, mix them all up, and choose a different

category. Possible ways to sort the cards are below.

Sort the cards based on the vowel patterns.

Sort the cards based on the number of sounds or syllables in each word.

Sort the cards based on whether phonics patterns, for example if it has a blend (2 or more consonants that are right next to each other and you hear each sound) or digraph (2 letters, only 1 unique sound).

Reading Readers have many ways to figure out a new word. You have learned that one way is to look for clues in words and phrases around the new word. Today you are going to learn another way for determining the meaning of an unknown word. First, check the features on the page like diagrams, photos, captions, or glossaries. Then reread around the word (before and after). Think about what you learned from the features and what you reread around the unknown word. Then, say what you think the word might mean.

Watch me as I try it. While reading the text Levers and Pulleys, I am not sure what the word pulley means. I notice a diagram on the page and it is titled Using a Pulley so the diagram must show me what a pulley does. There is a load, wheel, and rope. By looking at the diagram, I see the load must be lifted by using a pulley. Let me reread around the word in the text. I want to reread before and after the word pulley. A pulley is another kind of machine. It can also be used to lift a load. It is made of a rope and a wheel. Okay, let me think about what I learned from the diagram and what I reread. I think a pulley is made up of a wheel and rope, and it is used to lift a heavy object.

Now, it is your turn to try this strategy! Check the features. Reread around the word. Think about the feature and the information you reread. Say what you think the word means. Reread the passage titled Levers and Pulleys by Julian Green.

• What does the word fulcrum mean? • What does the word load mean?

Writing Today you are going to bring your writing to an end. Writers call this a conclusion. It is when the writer sums up what he/she has been writing about so the reader knows it is going end soon. It can be a sentence or several sentences. One way to do this is to follow these steps:

▪ Reread the entire writing piece you have been working on. ▪ Think…What is my main topic? ▪ Say your main topic in a sentence. Write it at the end of your piece. ▪ Ask your reader a question about your topic. Write it. ▪ You just wrote a conclusion! Reread it!

This mean a lot of people were poor from losing their jobs and income. However, families still had needs even

though they had less money. Based on this understanding, why would bartering be a better solution for

receiving goods and services than purchasing?

Showing Respect

Showing respect for others shows that we value them as human beings. To be

respected, we must respect others, and everyone deserves respect. Respect involves

accepting others and treating people equally. Learning to respect others is important for

our relationships and our own acceptance by other people. People who respect others

are more likely to be respected in return. Respect involves being kind, polite, and

honest. When we respect others, we are more open to learning from them and they can

guide us through different aspects of our lives. Not respecting other people can result in

isolation, not being liked by others, spending time with the wrong types of people, and

getting ourselves into trouble with other people. Directions: Write or discuss the following with an adult, friend, or sibling.
