July 2017
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Now is a time of great transition for our Catholic brothers and sisters serving in the UnitedStates Armed Forces. While many are home with their families in the wake of troop withdrawals fromthe Middle East, others remain on the front lines to face a scattered but determined enemy. Those stilldeployed endure ongoing adversity, sacrifice and danger. Those back home confront major lifeadjustments - always aware they could be called back to action at any time, as are others who haveyet to experience combat. Facing so many kinds of hardship, these Catholics in uniform rely on thepriests who serve as military chaplains for spiritual support, guidance in faith and access to thesacraments.
How can we, as witnesses to the Gospel, be there for our fellow Catholics who put so muchon the line to defend our Country?
In 2013, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops approved a new nationalcollection to be taken up once every three years to support the Archdiocese for the Military Services -the only arm of the Church responsible for priests who serve as chaplains in the U.S. Military aroundthe world.
This collection offers each of us a substantial way to "serve those who serve." Funds willhelp the Archdiocese for the Military Services and its endorsed priests bring the Church's full rangeof pastoral services to the men and women in uniform, as well as their families and patients in thenation's Veteran Affairs medical centers. They will support religious education in remote locations, priestly formation of new chaplains at a time of critical shortage, and financial planning to meet thechallenges of shepherding a global archdiocese that is present wherever U.S. military personnel arestationed.
The Archdiocese for the Military Services receives no government funding. Please begenerous with your gift that helps assure a priestly presence for our men and women in uniform.
ln the Lord's Peace,
Qa*s^L,^Most Reverend Robert E.6uslielmoneBishop of Charleston

PASTORAL MANAGEMENT
What is it?
The Pastor’s Toolbox is a comprehensive
overview to the key elements of pastoral
management for pastors. Created in 2007
by The Leadership Roundtable,
the program has undergone continuous
review and improvement, including an
external assessment of its impact on
participants.
The Toolbox -
As a formational and educational process
is fully attentive to the participant
as pastoral leader and person.
The Toolbox is responsive to
needs articulated by pastoral leadership
in the Diocese of Charleston.
It addresses these needs in highly pragmatic
ways it will be and immediately useful to
participants.
CURRICULUM CONTENT AREAS:
All presenters are committed Catholics not
just content experts. They are experienced
in presenting to priests with attention to
their specific role as parish pastoral leader.
This event is designed as a “cohort”
experience—with all participants
experiencing the same content. There will
be ample opportunities for informal sharing
in smaller settings throughout.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
Pastors’ Self-Evaluation in Pastoral Management
Theology of Management
Developing a Vision
Managing Money for Mission
A Strong Leadership Team &
Pastoral Planning
Canon Law for Pastors
Complex Pastoring
Risk Management
Human Resources
Building Councils
Stewardship
Leadership Development and
Wellness
Parish Management Tools
Surviving and Thriving As Pastor
Leadership Roundtable
WHAT WE DO
Leadership Roundtable serves as a
partner to Catholic leaders through
integrated solutions related to temporal
management and leadership
development. These solutions are
pragmatic, high impact, manageable and
affordable. Only resources that are
already established as high quality and
consistent with the teachings of the
Catholic Church are included in what
Leadership Roundtable offers.
Leadership Roundtable designs powerful
integrated roadmaps for clients using
local resources, Leadership Roundtable
resources, and the very best resources
from across the United States. These
pragmatic, transformative solutions are
individually designed and assembled for
specific Catholic dioceses, religious orders
and other Catholic organizations.
Leadership Roundtable promotes best
practices and accountability in the
management, finances, communications,
and human resources development of the
Catholic Church in the U.S., including
greater incorporation of the expertise of
the laity.

The Youth Minister 1 Day “Boot
Camp” is a day long training to
help youth ministers find their
way in youth ministry. New youth
ministers need to be adequately
prepared for a role that is often
riddled with unanticipated pot-
holes, curves, and fuel shortages!
A new youth minister needs to un-
derstand the challenges of the ter-
rain and be given a road map for
building dynamic, disciple-making
youth ministries that transform
the lives of young people and all
the while staying healthy them-
selves. The 1 Day “Boot Camp” is
all this and more! Plus, you will
receive great resources that are
more than the cost of the registra-
tion!

Diocese of Charleston
Office of Youth Ministry

Charleston, SC 29407
Fax: (843) 804-9408
This Core Training weekend will focus on two main components:
How to build relationships with youth and how to develop an evangelistic outreach in your youth group to reach youth in your parish and community. How do we as a youth group develop real, concrete strategies to share the gospel with those around us – especially those within our parish/schools?
Improving your outreach within your parish program – emphasis on main components of your youth nights with your core members; how to get the most out of small groups; how to give talks that will leave them talking, how to give your testimony; how to ensure that all who attend are welcome and feel welcome; developing a strategy for going deeper in your youth night.
Plus breakout sessions for both youth and adults. Also, plenty of time for youth CORE groups to pray together, process, and to plan together! Following XLT on Saturday night, there will be a special prayer time for each CORE to pray as a CORE group.

Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response

The Calling of Saint Matthew, Michelangelo Caravaggio, oil on canvas, 1600 (from
the Gospel of St. Matthew 9:9), Rome, Italy.
Special Guests of the 2017 Annual Conference
55th Annual Stewardship Conference
“The Call” is the title of the very first chapter of the United States Catholic bishops’ pastoral letter Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response. Their premise is that every baptized Christian is called to be a follower of Jesus Christ and to be a good steward of their life in Christ. Today, twenty-five years after the stewardship pastoral was written, the International Catholic Stewardship Council honors the bishops’ pastoral at its 55th annual conference to be held from September 17 to 20, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia.
This year, ICSC adopts as its conference image the classical painting The Calling of Saint Matthew by Michelangelo Caravaggio. This painting depicts the gospel scene where Jesus calls Matthew to follow him (Mt. 9:9); thus, changing his life radically. The painting symbolizes that universal call to follow Christ Jesus no matter the cost. It is not a coin-cidence that this year’s ICSC conference begins a few days before the feast of Saint Matthew on September 21.
The spiritual energy generated at the annual ICSC conference is always inspiring!
Internationally recognized as the most valuable conference for those involved in Christian stewardship, the annual ICSC conference is a gathering of scores of Catholic stew-ards living and teaching Christian stewardship in the Catho-lic tradition. It offers over 80 program sessions to inform and inspire attendees through the sharing of innovative ideas, networking with peers, and providing best practices and proven strategies for inviting others in parishes and dio-ceses alike to become good stewards of their life in Christ.
Please note: Most of the session titles are new presenta-tions, unless brought back by popular demand, as we strive to continually address the needs of ICSC members and the Catholic Church!

Holy Father Francis. In 1984, Pope John Paul II invit-
ed young people from all over the world to partici-

the Diocese of Charleston on what is likely
to be a life changing experience...World
Youth Day in Panama, January of 2019.
Even though 2019 seems a far way off, the
time to start planning is now as availability is
limited and it is a first come, first serve basis.
Our pilgrimage will combine all of the
excitement of a World Youth Day experi-
ence, but also allow us to experience some
of the beauty and natural wonders that can
only be found in Panama. Our hotel is in the
very heart of Panama City on the Costa Cin-
tera which means we will be steps away
from the countless opportunities to learn
about our faith, and celebrate with thou-
sands of other youth from across the globe.

Nurturing Gratitude: The Foundation Upon Which the Pillars of Stewardship Stand Presented by Mark Mogilka, Director of Stewardship and Pastoral Services, Diocese of Green Bay, WI
If members of a faith community are not able to see the many blessings they have and to affirm and give thanks for their abundant gifts, it is difficult for them to embrace the call to freely share their time, talent, and treasures with others. Cultivating a personal lifestyle or a culture of stewardship in a faith community is dependent on the ability of persons and communities to nurture the “attitude of gratitude”. An exploration of gratitude well as some practical ideas how to personally and communally nurture this virtue will be presented.
