In an effort to promote sustainability, approximately 1,760 tons of clean concrete and 84 deck panels were transported off site for recycling. Over six tons of recyclables including cardboard, paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum were diverted from landfills. In addition approximately 11.5 tons of plywood sheets and wood pallets were reused on and off site. Though some tunnel was constructed, New York City’s fiscal crisis led to the halt of construction just three years later, and construction did not resume until 2007. Join historian Peter Derrick for a look back at the 1970s construction effort and see photos of what the tunnels look like today. Construction Update

Work Hours

• ConcretepoursabovestreetlevelforwallsandfloorsatAncillary 1 and 2 are ongoing.

• Continuedutilityinstallationstoincludegas,water,electricand telephone, on the east side of Second Avenue this month. Decking panels will be removed in conjunction with this work, followed by backfilling up to the roadway.

• IntermittentstreetclosingswilloccuronE.93rd,94th,and 95th Streets between First and Second Avenues. East 94th Street will also be intermittently closed between Second and Third Avenues. These closures are necessary to support construction of the ancillary buildings and entrances and only take place as needed.

• Communicationsrooms,signalrooms&tractionpower rooms are near completion.

• Waterproofing installation,concretepours,andinstallation of escalator trusses at Entrances.

Future entrance of the 96th Street Station on Second Avenue.

The future 96th Street Station will have three entrances with 10 escalators and one ADA accessible elevator from street level. The construction in this area involved heavy civil/structural work for the 96th Street Station which was completed in November 2013.

The follow-on contract is underway and will include the building of the station structure, systems, and finishes. This follow-on contracted will be complete in Summer 2016.
