The /ollowtng in/ormatton was obtatned by Liaison SupervisorJl. W. Ku.hrt2 at the Intelligence Advisory Committee - Watch Committee'spectal mee~ing on September 21, 1957, relattve to the captioned m.atter. The tnttial report in thts.matter was given by the U.S. Ai.r ~e/ense Command 10 the White Hou~ on September 20, 1957, reflecting ~at an unident~!~ed flying object was picked up by radar station at Montauk Point, Long Island, New York, at approximately 4 p.m., proceeding in a westward dtrection with an altitude Of 50,000 feet and a speed 0/ 2,000 knots (approximately 2300 miles per hour). The radar station at Montau.k Point maintained an image for approximately one m.inute, and thereafter it was picked up by a radar station at Benton, Pennsylvania (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvanta), which coinctded with the Montauk Potnt ptckup and -was tracked by. Een~on for apprOXimately 9 minutes. Therea/ter, jamming was reported by several radar stations westward as far as Chicago.

The Watch Committee at its meeting on September 21 was told bi! the Air De/ense Command that the odginal reports had been down-graded, stnce there was an II-minute break tn the tracktng by the vartous radalf. stattons, and further that weather ::stcitions; in ~e ar.ea weTe 0/ the type wh ich have in the past produced false radar "p(ips" and electronic in/ormation. Also, there were·a number 0/ Strategic. Air Command planes in the Chicago area on a training flight. The JYatch Committee was told that the Air Defense Command has not completed its investigatton 0/ this incident; however, in any event it; was reported that the phenomena reported west 0/ Buf/alo, New York, were not related to the object as reported by Montauk Point aTt'd Eenton, Pennsylvania. ,.

    \

The Watch Committee concluded that, "It is highly improba.!!l..G--that a Soviet operation is responsible lor the unidentified /lying--j object reports 0/ September, 1957. /I The Watch Committee in consideltng thts matter also concluded that there i.s no tntelligence on Soviet activities which can be related to a missile lau.nching 0/ thts l~!

so-called flying discs had a somewhat shiny appearance and

would fly in formation and change their position from time

to time. Most reports stated that they appeared in the late

    afternoon or about dusk.

:':ost all reports were to the effect that these objects

had the appearance of an inverted disc or saucer, and some

of them reported that they appeared to be rotatin--; in their

    flight.

The mystery of the rlyin~ saucers or discs may be sol-

ved by the use of a little applied SCience along ~tith a

    few simple experiments.
