DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MATH AND AM?
55
Given that 16𝑥−1 = 8,
find the value of x.
(EM)
Soln: 24𝑥−4 = 23
4𝑥 − 4 = 3
𝑥 = 13
4
Solve 32−𝑥 + 3𝑥+1 = 12. (AM)
Soln:
9 ×1
3𝑥+ 3 × 3𝑥=12
Let y be 3𝑥
3𝑦 +9
𝑦= 12
3𝑦2 − 12𝑦 + 9 = 0𝑦 − 1 𝑦 − 3 = 0
𝑦 = 1 𝑜𝑟 3𝑥 = 0 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = 1

SO…WHICH ARE MY OPTIONS WITH AM?
1. Engineering courses
2. Applied Chemistry
3. Biomedical Sciences
4. Food Science and Technology
5. Mechatronics & Robotics
6. Information Technology
7. H2 Math in JC (Add Math a pre-requisite)
8. Further Math (to be taken with H2 Math)57
FAQ (NORMAL ACAD)
If a student takes ‘O’ Level Math in lower sec, will he/she “automatically” be given ‘O’ Math in Upper Sec?
All students who meet the cut-off will be offered. We encourage students to work consistently for their goals.
If a student did not take ‘O’ Level Math in Lower Sec, will he/she be able to take it in Upper Sec?
Yes, if he/she meets the cut-off (2NA: 60%) and is interested to take.
58
FAQ (NORMAL ACAD) What is the difference if an Sec 3NA student
takes ‘O’ Level Math or NA Math?
The demands of O Math are higher than
NA Math. O Level Math opens up more
options for post-secondary courses.
Can a NA student take NA Math and Additional Math?
No. The topics covered in Add Math assumes
the full knowledge of O Math. Students might
not be able to handle the demands. 59
FAQ (EXPRESS) If I’m not eligible to take AM, are my pathways
to my dream courses limited?
In JC, you NEED Add Math in order to take H2 Math (H1 being the easiest). Hence, work hard if this is your goal.
For entry to Poly courses, either Elementary OR Additional Mathematics is required. It is good to have AM. If not, you can bridge the gap by working hard in Poly.

85
SOME MAY THINK…
“Some subjects are easier than others.”
“It is easier to score for some subjects.”
Each subject is rigorous in its own right and demands commitment and effort.
All have formative and summative assessments and deadlines.
86
SOME MAY THINK…
“It is better to choose subjects that give me more options.”
“It is better to take more subjects.”
It is better to choose subjects based on your aptitude, strengths and learning disposition.
There are different topics/texts and the assessments are more rigorous in Upper Secondary.
87
SOME MAY THINK…
“I should take the same subject combination as my friends so that we will be in the same class.”
Do not simply “go with the crowd” or “follow your friend(s)”.
