SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTESABOUT BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Founded in 1909, Borussia Dortmund is one of the largest clubs not only in Germany, but all of Europe. Since 1974, Die Schwarzgelben (The Black and Yellows) have played at Signal Iduna Park, formerly known as Westfalensta-dion, the largest stadium in Germany and seventh largest in Europe. With a capacity of 81,365, Signal Iduna Park is renowned for its legendary matchday atmosphere. Dortmund routinely leads the world in professional club football attendance, including a global-best 80,230 fans per game this season, besting second-place Manchester United and third-place Barcelona.

“We’re excited to welcome a storied club like Borussia Dortmund to Cen-turyLink Field for the first time,” said Sounders FC Chief Operating Officer Bart Wiley. “Bringing world class opponents to Seattle has been a tradition for Sounders FC going back to 2009, and we couldn’t be happier to once again host one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Before then, however, we will enjoy cheering them on as they fight for the Bundesliga title over the next few weeks.”

BORUSSIA DORTMUND FAST FACTS

One of the original 16 teams of the Bundesliga in 1963, Dortmund has eight German league championships, four DFB-Pokal titles, one UEFA Champions League (1996-1997), one Intercontinental Cup (1997) and one UEFA Winners’ Cup (1965-1966), the latter being the first-ever European championship by a German club.

Dortmund’s home ground, Signal Iduna Park, is the largest stadium in Germa-ny. Die Schwarzgelben routinely lead the world in professional club football attendance, including a global-best 80,230 fans per game this season, besting second-place Manchester United and third-place Barcelona.

In the current campaign, Dortmund currently sits second in the Bundesliga table with a record of 21 win, three losses and six draws, one point behind first-place Bayern Munich. It also advanced out of the Group Stage of the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League before falling to Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16.

First-year Manager Lucien Favre, a former Swiss international and longtime playmaking midfielder in Switzerland and France, previously coached at OGC Nice, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hertha BSC, FC Zürich, as well as a num-ber of other Swiss clubs.

Notable players include German National Team forward Marco Reus (17 goals, 11 assists), Spanish forward Paco Alcácer (18 goals) and English winger Jadon Sancho (12 goals, 17 assists).

Major League Soccer on June 24 announced that Sounders FC midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro has been named to the 26-man roster that is taking on Atlético Madrid in the 2019 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target. Comprised of MLS All-Star Fan XI presented by Target, two Commissioner’s picks, and 13 selections by MLS All-Star Head Coach James O’Connor of Orlando City SC, this roster is facing the 10-time La Liga champions at Exploria Stadium in Orlando on Wednesday, July 31 (5:00 p.m. PT / FS1, UniMas, TSN and TVA Sports). This marks the first MLS All-Star selection for Lodeiro and the 24th all-time selection for Sounders FC since entering the league in 2009.

Lodeiro has started all 15 of his appearances this season and is currently tied for fourth in MLS with eight assists, to go along with four goals. His 63 fouls suffered lead MLS and his 86 corner kicks rank second for the 2019 season. Last season, Lodeiro established a new single-season club record with 16 assists, in addition to a career-high eight goals. His 44 career MLS assists are the most in club history and rank first in MLS since Lodeiro entered the league in July of 2016. The roster featuring rising talents, dynamic competitors and highly accom-plished superstars includes 12 previous MLS All-Stars and 14 debutants, including Lodeiro. On the international scene, 14 countries are represented by this roster - the second most in MLS All-Star history - with 11 FIFA World Cup participants and eight players currently on national team duty. Among teams contributing multiple players, Atlanta United leads all MLS clubs with five All-Stars, while LAFC comes in a close second with four. This impressive collection of MLS stars will face Atlético Madrid, whose 10 La Liga championships rank among the top three in Spain. The iconic club has won 30 trophies across all competitions, including the UEFA Europa League in 2018, and finished second in La Liga in 2019. Bheem, a bright, active eight-year-old battling acute lymphocytic leukemia, is a passionate Sounders FC fan whose dream is to play for Seattle. Last Wednes-day, he was signed to a Sounders FC contract and participated in a full day of activities, including goalkeeper training with Stefan Frei, his favorite player. On Wednesday night, Bheem will suit up with the club.

In addition to cheering Bheem on, fans attending Wednesday’s match can enjoy other prematch activities.

SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTESNEW TURF AT CENTURYLINK FIELD

Sounders FC, the Seattle Seahawks and First & Goal Inc. jointly announced on June 27 that the installation of a new FieldTurf Revolution 360 playing sur-face has been completed inside CenturyLink Field. The new surface replaces the previous FieldTurf pitch that was installed in 2016, allowing both Sounders and Seahawks players to utilize the state-of-the-art field effective immediately.

“Because of our strong partnerships with the Seattle Seahawks, First & Goal Inc. and FieldTurf, we are pleased to announce this new surface for our play-ers half a season ahead of schedule,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanau-er. “The close relationships between all four organizations allow for this type of proactive collaboration, and we are excited for our players to take the field on their new surface this weekend. FieldTurf is a global leader in this space, and we are proud to have played on their surfaces for all 11 of our MLS seasons.” FieldTurf systems offers unmatched performance and safety characteristics, delivering a premier experience to athletes and field owners. The company continues to find new ways to reduce the risk and severity of injuries, and its focus on safety has led to numerous injury-reducing innovations and improve-ments. Independent multi-year research validates their mission and execution of providing the safest playing fields possible for the athletes who use them. Revolution 360 uses a leading monofilament fiber, providing optimal playability for football and soccer. Revolution 360 achieved a score of 83 on the Fiber Performance Index (FPI) and showed no signs of wear after 150,000 Lisport cycles in Fiber Wear testing conducted by Penn State’s Center for Sports Surface Research - an unprecedented score. “FieldTurf has been a great partner for years and continues to set the standard in turf technology,” said David Young, Seahawks Senior Vice President of Busi-ness Operations and General Manager of CenturyLink Field. “It is imperative that we continue to provide the best playing surface for both the Seahawks and Sounders FC and we are proud to work with FieldTurf once again.” “FieldTurf is thrilled to continue our long-standing relationship with the Sea-hawks and Sounders FC,” said FieldTurf President Eric Daliere. “We share a commitment to player safety and it is a testimony to the quality of our products that such prestigious organizations continue to put their trust in our company.” CenturyLink Field is one of four NFL stadiums to utilize FieldTurf, along with Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Detroit’s Ford Field and New England’s Gil-lette Stadium. There are three MLS stadiums in addition to CenturyLink Field that use FieldTurf (Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, New England’s Gillette Stadium and Portland’s Providence Park). The two Seattle organizations have a long history with FieldTurf. In 2000, when the Seahawks played at the University of Washington’s Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium, they became the first NFL team to play their home games on FieldTurf. The partnership has continued at CenturyLink Field and at both the Seahawks and Sounders FCtraining facilities (VMAC and Starfire Sports). Sounders FC has played on FieldTurf since its inaugural 2009 season in Major League Soccer.

Seattle’s 1-0 vs. Vancouver on June 29 vauled the Rave Green to the top of the 2019 Cascadia Cup standings. Sounders FC is level with Whitecaps FC with four points apiece, but hold the first tiebreaker on head-to-head points. Last season, Seattle captured its fifth Cascadia Cup title (third in MLS) after earning nine points from four matches, including a 2-1 win at Vancouver to clinch the trophy.

The Cascadia Cup formally started in 2004 by the biggest supporters groups for each of the three clubs - Emerald City Supporters, Timbers Army and Vancouver Southsiders. The competition began when all three teams were members of the USL First Division and involves all three clubs, save for 2009 and 2010, when it was between the Timbers and the Whitecaps due to Seattle moving to MLS. In 2011, all three sides were in the MLS for the first time and the competition has existed in top division since.

SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTESCHAD MARSHALL ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM PROFESSIONAL SOCCER

Seattle Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall on Wednesday, May 22 announced his retirement from professional soccer due to injury. The 34-year-old concludes a historic 16-year Major League Soccer career with Sounders FC and Columbus Crew SC, in which he became the only player in league history to win MLS De-fender of the Year three times. Marshall finishes his career with seven major trophies and ranks second all-time among field players in all participation categories (appearances, starts and minutes played).

“After more than 15 years of living my childhood dream, the time has come for me to hang up the boots,” said Marshall. “I’d like to thank everyone that has played a part in my career. To my teammates, support staff and coaches: you’ve been my second family. The locker room is what I’ll miss the most. Thank you to the fans of Seattle and Columbus for supporting me throughout the years, as well as the Sounders FC and Columbus Crew SC organizations for giving me a chance to represent them on the field. Most importantly, I’d like to thank my family. I’m forever indebted to them for the sacrifices they’ve made in allowing me to pursue this dream. From heartbreaking losses to MLS Cup wins, own goals to cartwheels, it’s been a blast.”

The second overall selection in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, Marshall’s accolades across his 16-year career include three MLS Defender of the Year honors (2008, 2009, 2014), four MLS Best XI selections (2008, 2009, 2014, 2018) and four MLS All-Star appearances (2009, 2010, 2014, 2015). On the team side, he is a two-time MLS Cup Champion (2008 with Columbus; 2016 with Seattle) and a four-time Supporters’ Shield winner (2004, 2008 and 2009 with Columbus; 2014 with Seattle), in addition to winning the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with Sounders FC. He ranks fourth overall and second among field players in MLS history with 409 appearances, 404 starts and 35,843 minutes played (regular season only), recording 26 goals and 16 assists. He also has 30 career appearances and three goals in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

Playing his final professional match on May 4 at Minnesota United, Marshall has been listed on the club’s injury report with right knee inflammation in recent weeks.

“When we traded for Chad back in December of 2013, Head Coach Sigi Schmid really believed in him, and he challenged us to go and get one of the best defenders in league history,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer. “Despite being a known commodity across MLS, Chad still exceeded all of our expecta-tions during his time in Seattle. On top of his exceptional play on the field, Chad brought a level of veteran stability and leadership to the locker room and was an excellent member of the Seattle community. On behalf of the club, I extend my heartfelt thanks for his service and consider it an honor to have watched him in Rave Green.”

Marshall came to Sounders FC via trade prior to the 2014 season after 10 years with Columbus Crew SC. In his five-plus seasons with Seattle, the reliable center-back started 154 of his 156 career regular-season appearances (fourth in club history in both categories), recording 10 goals and six assists. In his first season in Rave Green, Marshall started all 31 of his appearances and helped the club to its first Supporters’ Shield and fourth U.S. Open Cup title, in addition to starting all four postseason matches and earning MLS Defender of the Year and Best XI honors. He helped Seattle to back-to-back MLS Cup appearances in 2016 and 2017, starting all 11 of the club’s postseason matches in those seasons. In his last full season in 2018, Marshall finished runner-up for MLS Defender of the Year and earned his fourth Best XI selection. He appeared in 19 of Sounders FC’s 20 postseason matches during his time in Seattle, and scored a 90th-minute goal in the second leg of the 2015 Western Conference Semifinals against FC Dallas. For his contributions, Marshall was voted by his teammates as Sounders FC Defender of the Year four times (2014, 2016-2018) in his five full seasons with the club.

“Thank you, Chad. It was a privilege to have such a smart, humble player as part of the Sounders for so long, one of the greatest careers for any domestic player in MLS history,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “We really enjoyed having Chad as part of this organization, from his wickedly funny personality to everything he brought on and off the field. Chad is going to be successful with whatever comes next, and he will always be part of the Sounders family.”

SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTESCHAD MARSHALL ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM PROFESSIONAL SOCCER

After being selected by Columbus Crew SC second overall out of Stanford, Marshall spent 10 seasons for the Ohio side and is the club’s all-time leader in appearances (253), starts (250) and minutes played (22,220), recording 16 goals and 10 assists in regular-season action. He also scored twice in 11 postseason appearances, including tallies in the 2008 Eastern Conference Championship and the game-winning goal in the 2008 MLS Cup Final. He helped Columbus capture the Supporters’ Shield in 2004, 2008 and 2009, and earned MLS Defender of the Year and Best XI honors in 2008 and 2009. On the club side, he took home the team’s 2011 MVP award, Defender of the Year honor four times (2008-2010, 2013) and was awarded the first Breakout Performance of the Year honor in 2004.

“Ever since he came to Seattle, Chad has been a massive influence on our franchise, whether it was his play on the field or his impact off of it, he is a true champion,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. “It’s hard to put into words all of the positive things he has brought to the club and his teammates. It has been an honor to coach such a fantastic American player, arguably one the best defenders in MLS history. I’d like to thank him for what he’s done in the Sounders community and wish him the best in whatever he decides to do next. We, the players and staff will miss him, and our league has lost a great player.”

Marshall earned 12 international caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team in his career, including five appearances in a runner-up finish at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He scored his lone international goal in his first match with the USMNT, a 3-0 friendly win over Colombia on March 9, 2005 in Fullerton, California. After nearly seven years of absence from the national team, Marshall started and played 90 minutes in a scoreless draw with Serbia on January 29, 2017 in San Diego.

“Chad is one of the best athletes I ever played with or helped bring to a club in a management role,” said Sounders FC Vice President of Soccer & Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “He won champi-onships on multiple teams and his longevity and consistency are a testament to the measure of his value in this league. We were fortunate to have him contribute to our success for so many years here in Seattle.” A standout at Stanford from 2002 through 2003, Marshall started 39 of his 40 appearances, registering three goals with two assists. He was named to the 2002 NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team after helping the Cardinal reach the championship match, and he earned All-Pac-10 honors both seasons. Prior to Stanford, he was a standout at Rubidoux High School in Riverside, California, where he earned NCSAA All-American honors as a senior in 2002, in addition to being named a Parade All-American in 2001 and 2002, as well as Parade’s Best Defender in 2002.

Chad Marshall became just the second field player in league history to record 400 career starts in March 30’s scoreless draw at Vancouver (Jeff Larentowicz became the third on May 12).

Marshall, the only three-time MLS Defender of the Year, currently ranks second all-time among outfield players in starts (404) and minutes played (35,843) and tied for second in career appearances (409), trailing only Kyle Beckerman in all categories (including goalkeepers, he ranks fourth in those cate-gories. Marshall began his MLS career in 2004 with Columbus Crew SC and spent 10 years with the Black & Gold before moving to Seattle.

Marshall also ranks fourth in Sounders FC club history with 156 appearances, 154 starts and 13,623 minutes played in MLS regular-season play with Seattle. He has been voted Sounders FC Defender of the Year in each of the past three seasons, and four of the last five overall.
