THANK YOU, JACKIE: The Dodgers look for the three-game
series sweep of the Mariners and celebrate the 68th anniversary of the
breaking of baseball’s color barrier with Jackie Robinson’s MLB
debut on April 15, 1947. In addition to Jackie Robinson Day, tonight’s
game is also the 2015 Civil Rights Game and, as has been a tradition
each April 15 since 2009, MLB will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day
with all players and on-field personnel wearing No. 42 jerseys. Rachel
Robinson, Jackie’s widow, will play a central role in tonight’s first-
pitch ceremony, which will also feature Sandy Koufax, Don
Newcombe, Joni Campanella (Roy’s daughter) and scholars from the
Jackie Robinson Foundation. Dolores Huerta, Earvin “Magic”
Johnson and Frank Robinson also will be recognized during pre-
game ceremonies. Actor and multi-platinum Grammy-nominated artist
Tyrese Gibson will perform the national anthem.
The first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive a Jackie
Robinson Replica Jersey presented by Bank of America.
Major League Baseball has held a number of events in
conjunction with the Civil Rights Game, including a youth
baseball clinic yesterday and a roundtable discussion on the
pivotal role baseball played in the civil rights movement, the
game’s continued presence as a social institution in
American society and present-day social issues affecting the
country and the world earlier today. A pre-game press
conference prior to tonight’s game will be held at 6:15
p.m. in the Dodgers’ Interview Room with Commissioner
Manfred, Rachel Robinson and Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
Dodger players will attend the Los Angeles Dodgers
Foundation’s Blue Diamond Gala during the off-day
tomorrow before finishing the homestand with a three-game
series against the Colorado Rockies this weekend.
WALK-OFF THIS WAY: Los Angeles looks to extend its season-
long winning streak to four and pick up its first series sweep of the
season tonight against the Mariners, which would be its second all-
time series sweep over Seattle (July 9-11, 1999 at Dodger Stadium). It
would be the Dodgers’ first Interleague sweep since winning both
games in Anaheim against the Angels, Aug. 6-7, 2014 and their first
three-game Interleague sweep since April 30-May 1, 2014 at
Minnesota. The Dodgers won the first two games of the series in walk-
off fashion, picking up back-to-back walk-off wins for the first time
since July 28, 2013 vs. the Reds and July 30, 2013 vs. the Yankees
and doing so on consecutive days for the first time since May 31-June
2, 2010, when Los Angeles swept the D-backs with three consecutive
walk-off victories.
The Dodgers have gone 140-156 all-time in Interleague play,
but have posted winning records against the AL in
consecutive seasons, going 12-8 in 2013 and 11-9 last year.
Howie Kendrick continued his Seattle success last night
with his seventh career walk-off RBI, as he went 2-for-4 and
drove in the tying and winning runs in the ninth inning.
Kendrick is facing a familiar foe in the Mariners, against
whom he ranks among the active leaders in games (134, 3rd
),
hits (131, 3rd
), doubles (35, 3rd
) and RBI (65, 5th). Overall,
Kendrick has hit safely in seven of his eight games this year,
including four multi-hit games.
Kendrick has a .310 batting average (145-for-467) in 118
career Interleague games and joins Yasiel Puig (.331, 39-for-
124), Carl Crawford (.300, 195-for-651) and Adrian
Gonzalez (.297, 179-for-603) in hitting well against the
opposite league.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS: Limited tickets remain for the Los
Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s inaugural Blue Diamond Gala
Thursday, which includes a fashion show by Ted Baker London
(modeled by Dodger players) and a performance by Grammy-
nominated artist Aloe Blacc. For tickets and information on Blue
Diamond Gala sponsorships, please visit www.dodgers.com/gala.
MAKING MOVES: The Dodgers today recalled right-handed pitcher
Carlos Frias from Triple-A Oklahoma City, claimed left-handed
pitcher Ryan Dennick from the Reds and designated left-handed
pitcher David Huff for assignment. Dennick, who is on the 40-man
roster, has been optioned to Double-A Tulsa.
Frias, 25, last pitched on Friday for Triple-A Oklahoma City,
picking up the win and allowing three runs on eight hits in
5.1 innings against Round Rock. The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder
made four Cactus League appearances (one start) for the
Dodgers this spring, allowing six runs in 8.0 innings, and
appeared in 15 games (two starts) for the club last year in his
first big league action.
Dennick, 28, has gone 27-31 with 18 saves and a 3.88 ERA
in 210 career minor league games (26 starts) in seven
seasons and saw his first big league action last season with
Cincinnati, appearing in eight games. Dennick has made two
relief appearances for Triple-A Louisville this year, allowing
three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings. He was selected by
Kansas City in the 22nd round of the 2009 First-Year Player
Draft out of Tennessee Technological University.
FOLLOW THE LEADERS: Los Angeles hit two more home runs
last night and is tied with the Orioles and Mariners for the big league
lead with 13 home runs this season. The Dodgers also lead the NL
with 31 walks and a .347 team on-base percentage.
Dodger pitchers have also posted a Major League-leading 87
strikeouts, nine more than any other team (SD, 2nd
, 76).
Andre Ethier hit his first home run of the season and the
146th of his career last night, moving within one homer of
tying Adrian Beltre for 10th on the all-time Los Angeles
home run list.
FIREMEN: Yimi Garcia picked up the win for a second consecutive
game last night with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning after
earning his first big league win on Monday. Among relievers, Garcia
is tied with Colorado’s Adam Ottavino for the big league lead with 10
strikeouts and has allowed just one run on two hits in 6.0 innings in
five appearances this year.
Joel Peralta has opened his Dodger career with five
scoreless outings, allowing just two hits and striking out four
without a walk in 4.1 innings. Peralta picked up the win on
Opening Day against the Padres and has already earned two
saves this year after entering the season with only 12 career
saves in 556 previous relief appearances.
GOING GONZO: Adrian Gonzalez, the reigning National League
Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to 10 with two hits last
night, batting .588 (20-for-34) with six doubles, seven homers and 11
RBI during the run, which began on Sept. 27, 2014. He leads the
Majors in hits (17), home runs (5, T-1st with Seattle’s Nelson Cruz),
batting average (.548), on-base percentage (.622) and slugging
percentage (1.194) and also tops the NL with 10 runs scored.
Gonzalez’s 17 hits tie for the most by a Dodger through the
club’s first eight games along with Reggie Smith (1980),
Babe Herman (1929) and Tommy Griffith (1919). The
club record for hits through nine games is 18, held by Zack
Wheat (1923, 1925), Smith (1980), Eric Karros (1995) and
Griffith (1919).
He has reached base safely at least twice in each of the
Dodgers’ eight games this year.
