What is Your Displacement pg7
1. Draw a map from school to your house.2. Place a dot at your house.3. Place a second dot at the school.4. Write a paragraph describing the directions.
Distance – the length of a path between two points (How many steps taken)
Ex: 40m + 30m = 70m
Displacement – shortest path between two points with direction
(How far away from start and direction) Ex: 50m east then 40m west is calculated
as 50m east - 40m west = 10m east
Distance and Displacement p8
Below your notes draw the following:1. Draw a dot at the top of the space on your paper.2. Connect the two dots using 5 straight lines in a
zigzag pattern.3. Use a ruler to determine the distance of your
path.4. Use a ruler to determine the displacement from
start to finish in cm.Distance (how far your pencil moved) = ______ cm Displacement (line from first to last dot) = ______ cm
Practice Distance and Displacement pg8
Motion – change in position with frame of reference
Speed – distance moved in a given time (How fast are you going?) ratio or rate
s=d/t s=speed d=distance t=time
SI unit: m/s m=meter s=second
Speed pg 10
Velocity– speed plus direction Ex: m/s north (How fast are you going in a direction? Ques: If you are going the same speed around a
race track does your velocity change?
Velocity pg 10
Instantaneous – rate at a specific instant Ex: radar gun measures how fast right now
Constant Speed – your speed remains the same Ex: using cruise control in your car
Average Speed – total distance travelled in total time (How fast was the whole trip?)
Ex: Average speed to Greenville is 42 mi/hr
Types of Speed/Velocity pg 10
