Volume 3, Issue 1
August 2012
It’s August! For those of you who were able to attend, the 2012 Conference for
Church Musicians is now a fleeting memory. The memories I hold of our holy
week at the lake are treasured moments filled with friends and music. Thankful
for each of our clinicians and leaders with all their unique gifts and talents, al-
low me to share a few of my reflections and remembrances since we were last
together.
I pray that what you learned from worship architect, Constance Cherry, will
bring new life to the worship of your church.
I imagine your choirs singing Pepper Choplin’s rally anthem-“Wake Up,
Church, Wake Up!”.
I hear a hymn text painted in living color by your organist or pianist who was
inspired by David Cherwien.
I am inspired by the master teachers of youth such as we witnessed in the skill
of Kenney Potter.
I smile at the thought of Michael Hawn’s instructions on how to begin your
own accordion ministry.
I marvel at the energy and joyful presence of those like Michael Glasgow,
who rang his way into our hearts.
I hope that the refreshment you found at Green Lake will carry you far into a
new season of music ministry and sustain you as a leader of God’s people.
Thanks again to each of you who came and added your voice or instrument,
your helping hand or encouraging word. Your FABM Board has read each
evaluation and noted many good ideas or suggestions for the future. Be aware
that we are already far into planning for next July (as well into 2014) and we
are encouraging you to mark your calendar now for July 13th-20th, 2013. With
great excitement, I am thrilled to announce the slate of clinicians that will be
coming.

Conference Info 2012 and 2013
Your board worked very hard this
past year to prepare for the Confer-
ence for Church Musicians 2012.
Every plan and preparation was
considered carefully so that you
were able to be spiritually renewed
through the gift of music. Our
prayer is that you were able to take
home many ideas, a big box of
music, lots of new skill and a re-
newed heart.
Your board will continue to lift
you in prayer as you follow the
journey God lays before you! Be
sure to check our website fre-
quently for updated information,
i.e. pictures from the conference,
new updates on clinicians for
2013, schedules, etc. Catch us at
www.fabm.com.
FINANCIAL INFORMATION
Budget 2012
Operating Expenses: $11,725
Conference Expense: $77.755
Total: $89,480
We have continued to work with
GLCC to provide you with the best
options for housing and scholar-
ship. Please make your housing
requests early to be able to get
what you want. We suggest you
do your room/camping reserva-
tions early. About May 1st all the
spaces we have reserved for you
will be placed back into the gen-
eral pool for all persons. We have
reserved a few extra camping
space for next year, but you still
need to register early!
If you are encouraging a new per-
son to join you next summer, re-
member that scholarship applica-
tions to FABM are due by May
1st . It’s a good way to give per-
sons an incentive to get them
started. Scholarships from FABM
are only for the registration to the
conference. There are also schol-
arships available from Green Lake
Conference Center. See
www.glcc.org for more informa-
tion and eligibility requirements.
FABM scholarships are for 1 time
only per person.
We are also always looking for
ways to share information about
the Conference for Church Musi-
cians. We have done more “free”
publicity and continue to look for
more ways to do that. If you have
an idea please contact President-
Elect, Steve Newman. General
information brochures will be up-
dated and available in hard copy or
by email attachment. We ask you
to think of ways to share those.
We’ll be doing an update after we
have our fall planning meeting in
October so if you want to wait for
updated information and pictures,
contact us through the website. If
you have a forum available to you
in your area to share FABM infor-
mation, please contact Karen Het-
rick at the Lending Library to
make arrangements to borrow her
display. Or contact a board mem-
ber and let us know what kind of
information you need to share in
your State, County or even city.

#588 ALMIGHTY, UN-
CHANGEABLE GOD
Cindy Berry
SATB
1996 Shawnee/GlorySound
Ab/Bb; 4/4
3:00
Piano/Keyboard
Easy/Medium
This aptly named anthem is a testi-
mony to our God who “rules and
reigns for all eternity.” The text
uses allusions to God as Creator
and Reigning Lord. The music
alternates between unison and
parts; the choral structure offers
the solid writing indicative of
Cindy’s work. The accompani-
ment also reflects her accomplish-
ment in the area of piano: well
written and accessible.
#589 FALL ON YOUR KNEES
Pepper Choplin
SATB
2010 Lorenz
D/Eb; 4/4, 12/8
4:00
Piano/Keyboard
Easy/Medium
Pepper Choplin, our 2012 adult
clinician, has written a lovely and
meaningful Christmas cantata,
Night of the Father’s Love, from
which this title has been published
in single anthem format. The
original piece references the
Christmas classic O Holy Night in
accompaniment patterns and in a
reharmonized middle section. The
marriage of the original choral
writing and text with its rich scrip-
tural connections makes for a
deeply moving worship experi-
ence. The song builds to a power-
ful climax and finishes in a reflec-
tive manner.
#590 HYMN OF DEDICATION
Molly Ijames
SATB
2011 SouthForth
G/Ab/F; 3/4
3:00
Piano/Keyboard
Easy/Medium
Based on the hymn tune BEACH
SPRING, this anthem is a hymn of
dedication to the Church, the body
of Christ. The accompaniment
flows; the voicings echo and inter-
twine. The text by Frances Haver-
gal placed in a fresh setting by
Molly Ijames presents solid theol-
ogy of who we are to be as the
Church. Alleluias begin, bridge,
and finish the piece.
#591 RAISE YOUR HANDS
Heather Sorenson
SATB
2011 Hal Leonard
Eb/F/G/A; 4/4
4:00
Piano/Keyboard
Easy/Medium
This song of prayer and worship
uses the imagery of hands raised to
God—in praise, in searching, in
offering, in despair. The text is
filled with the full range of experi-
ences of life’s journey. The music
begins with unison and moves to
two, then three, then four parts. A
secondary tune is introduced, then
the two are coupled together. The
anthem builds into a glorious ex-
pression of our trust in God’s
faithfulness. The video sample
from a Pepper reading session in-
cludes a testimony from Heather
of how the song came to be written
out of her faith journey.
#592 YOU ARE HOLY
Per Harling; arr. John Helgen
SATB
2004 Gladsong/Augsburg
Dmin; 4/4
3:30
Percussion; Violin/C Instrument
Easy/Medium
You Are Holy has an A section and
a B section that are each intro-
duced in unison. They repeat in
variation. The 2nd A section is in
3 parts w/TB in unison. The 2nd
B section is in two parts with a
melody and an echo harmony.
The 3rd B section is used before
the 3rd A section, continuing in a
two-part paring of SA and TB uni-
sons. SATBN is used for the final
four measures. Suggested percus-
sion is shaker or casaba and claves
or wood block. The percussion
parts are written in the choral
score. The violin/C instrument
part is in the score as well but is
provided on the back page. All
instruments come and go as part of
the layering of the music.

[The library has provisions for
adding new music to the library
through special gifts. To make a
donation toward additional an-
thems from the library’s “wish
list”, contact Librarian Karen Het-
rick for details. Designated finan-
cial gifts allow us to augment the
number of titles our annual budget
provides.
We regret that storage space and
volunteer limitations generally do
not allow us to accept used music
from church libraries. We are
happy to provide information on
creative opportunities for recycling
no-longer-needed music.]
