From the Pastors Desk
I write this introduction on the 21st day of June, a day of ancient
celebration of the summer solstice. The name is derived from
the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). As the days
lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand
still in the sky. The apparent movement of the Sun's path north
or south comes to a stop before reversing direction.
The Celts & Slavs celebrated the first day of summer with
dancing & bonfires to help increase the sun's energy. The
Chinese marked the day by honoring Li, the Chinese Goddess of
Light. Perhaps the most enduring modern ties with Summer
Solstice were the Druids' celebration of the day as the
"wedding of Heaven and Earth", resulting in the present day
belief of a "lucky" weddings in June.
Throughout Indian country, this time will be celebrated with
many dances and ceremonies in honor of the Creators
goodness and the renewing and healing power of Mother
Earth.
At this sacred time of the year, as our country is struggling once
again with the spiritual diseases of racism and violence. We
pray that the Creator will send peace, and wisdom upon our
nation. And we will look back upon this summer as the
beginning of the spiritual renewal, reconciliation and light
which has eluded us for so long.
I hope that you are enjoying this season of new beginnings and
are taking the time in your life to stand still in the sky and
enjoy the beauties and the peace of mid- summer.

Jan Perris Banner Exhibition
Jan Perris is a long time member of Grace Good Shepherd Church. She joined the church when Pastor Marie Hubble first organized Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Thus, Jan has been a member of our church for more than 50 years!
During the early years, Jan helped establish the Good Shepherd Cent Saver Thrift Shop, which operated for over 33 years. Following the 1964 floods, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church provided food, clothing, and shelter to many of the families who were victims of the flood. Following Good Shepherd's merger with Grace Lutheran Church, a Deacon's Food Project was added to the Cent Saver Shop.
Over the years, Jan also contributed her artistic gifts by designing and creating a variety of large hand-made wall hangings for the church. Many of the hangings illustrate seasonal themes of the Christian Church year and are being displayed for the month of July.
