Meteorology may not be an exact science anymore, if it ever was: spring and autumn have disappeared, temperatures are totally unpredictable with mild weather still lingering in the air and delaying the arrival of the winter season. But if there is something we can count on around this time of the year, it is the arrival of Christmas and Seasonings Italia is ready to guide its readers through Christmas holidays and even into the New Year.World-famous designer, architect and sculptor Gaetano Pesce will walk us through all the initiatives Four Seasons has in store for its guests, both in Milano and Firenze, the two cities that, more than any other, know how to make Christmastime atmosphere come alive. The two hotels are ideal locations for anyone spending Christmas holidays in town, with their rich program of events designed to suit all tastes and needs. This Christmas issue will be focusing on drinks, with interviews with bartenders Luca Angeli and Luca Marcellin who have been repeatedly awarded for their delicious cocktails, and on pastry making, with Italy’s most popular Christmas cakes, such as the art panettone and other specialties, as the stars of the season, prepared by pastry chef Domenico Di Clemente of Four Seasons Hotel Firenze and Luca Musitelli, the latest addition to Four Seasons Hotel Milano‘s staff. And the New Year marks also the countdown to Expo Milano, the event which, from May 2015, will be putting the spotlight on Lombardy and Italy for months and months. Four Seasons Hotels Milano and Firenze are ready to add their special touch to the wonderful hospitality that Italy will be able to offer guests from all over the world.
procrastinato quello dell’estate.
valorizzare l’atmosfera natalizia.

gaetano pesce one of the few ItalIan desIgners called maestro:
Gaetano Pesce, one of the world’s most admired and sought-after designers, architects and sculptors. Leader of the Italian Radical Design movement, he is known for his multidisciplinary, experimental and unconventional works. Part of major museums’ permanent collections, his works are always consistent with his research approach based on uniqueness of shape and use of modern materials. What value do you place on creativity?Creativity is invention, discovery. If someone discovers something useful to society, to economy or culture, that something is of the greatest importance. In your opinion, as one of Italy’s most cosmopolitan designers, how is Italian creativity viewed abroad? With great favour and respect. Italy cannot count on natural resources, like Brazil, Norway or South Africa, but it has been rich in intellectual capital for centuries, more than any other country in the world. It still is?Yes, indeed. Just take a look at our product quality, at the world of design, which is an all-Italian heritage. Our food is something much talked about throughout the world, and food is the fruit of Italian chefs’ creativity. This is but one of the presents Italy gives the world, along with fashion and much more. As far as the food theme is concerned, what do you expect from Milano’s Expo 2015?I hope it will be handled with due effectiveness, but it is something extremely useful, which will help millions of visitors learn more about our assets and contribute to exports. These assets are much more acknowledged abroad than by Italian politicians, who do not protect nor promote Italian creativity. Can we still refer to it as national design?Yes, we can, and what’s more, the only chance designers from other countries have of transforming their ideas into products is by coming to Italy, where Italian industrialists are very open-minded and inquisitive. What is your relationship with the capital of design?Milano is the city where futurism was born and futurism is the art form that celebrates noise, machinery, the production world and all this, back in the 1920s-1930s, led to contemporary designers’

Strano a dirsi, l’innovazione e l’atmosfera.
sensibility to the industrial world, which has its own culture. First of all, because it is one of the greatest expressions of our time. Secondly, if you stop to think that Michelangelo was at the head of a staff of 350, you realize how deeply rooted the idea of production associated with art is in Italy. That is why Milano is the heart of the industrial world that has invented the so-called “made in Italy”. Besides being a great designer, you are also a world-famous architect and sculptor. Where does your versatility come from? From my education. The kind of education you got in my days which, luckily, was not as specialist as it is today. We studied philosophy, along with mathematics and interior design. Ours was a successful education method, whereas today’s specialization prevails over the chance to learn. That is the reason why, in my opinion, our products are richer, deeper, more interesting. Have you ever created anything for Florence? Would you like to?I would definitely like to. Florence, with its extraordinary Renaissance architecture, is a living model for the present and the future. What is your next, major project? An interior in Rome, in a place of historical importance, but about which I cannot talk now, and two industrial projects, which are going to be introduced at the coming Milano’s International Furniture Fair. What quality do you search for in a restaurant? As strange as it may sound, innovation and atmosphere. And in a hotel?Service. The attention and warmth we receive in a hotel is very important and I have to admit that Four Seasons Milano and Firenze are world-leading hotels.

Firenze. The coming winter season promises to be a lively one, with Florence bringing out its modern contemporary side. Let’s start with art. Palazzo Strozzi hosts a great retrospective showcasing Picasso’s artistic personality. Picasso and Spanish Modernity features about 90 works by Picasso and other Spanish artists, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, etchings and a film, the result of the collaboration between Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía de Madrid. Showing till January 25. Palazzo Pitti’s Modern Art Gallery celebrates its 100th anniversary with the exhibition Spotlight on the 1900s, which shows the museum’s rich twentieth-century collections kept in the storehouses for too long: works by Giorgio De Chirico, Filippo De Pisis, Felice Casorati, Gino Severini, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Corrado Cagli and many more. Showing till March 8, 2015. The Accademia Gallery hosts The Fortunes of the Primitives, the exhibit focusing on major Italian painters, sculptures and miniaturists from the 13th to the 15th century, including Arnolfo di Cambio, Beato Angelico, Andrea Mantegna, Cosmè Tura and Giovanni Bellini. On view till December 8. A fast change of scenery leads us into the wonderful world of fashion, with Pitti Uomo 87, the menswear trade show held in Florence from January 13 to 16. Among this fair’s special events are Marni and Tilda Swinton. Theatre performances: Teatro Verdi presents the Moscow Ballet La Classique in Swan Lake on December 8, the Royal Moscow Ballet in The Nutcracker on January 2, and the Argentinian company Quinones Piliu in Tango de mi Buenos Aires on January 21. Maestro Riccardo Muti will be taking the podium to conduct the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra on

Firenze.

soluzioni e comfort altrimenti inarrivabili.
Luca Angeli and Luca Marcellin (strictly in alphabetical order) are young and curious, attentive to the evolution of tastes and trends, with years of experience behind and a future as cocktail “alchemists” ahead of them. They are regular features at the Atrium Bar & Lounge and Foyer Bar, the bars of Four Seasons Hotels Firenze and Milano respectively, open every single day of the year to offer a selection of delicious and out-of-the-ordinary drinks, in keeping with the Four Seasons Hotel’s traditional and unique concept of hospitality and comfort. “Trendy products, careful research, paying attention to customers’ requests, the use of the most advanced techniques- explains Luca Marcellin, mixologist of the Milano hotel’s bar, who represented Italy at the finals of the Domain de Canton Cocktail Contest in the Caribbean and came first ahead of 40 contestants- are the keys to our success, along with a highly-qualified and up-to-date staff of ten”. And when asked what he could never do without and what makes the bar of Four Seasons Milano so unique, he doesn’t hesitate to answer: “I could never do without my staff, our quality level, ongoing research and pursuit of the Italian style…These are, in my opinion, the distinguishing features that make each and every Four Seasons guest feel special and welcome”. In the meantime, he is getting ready for the European finals of the Rose’s Cup, taking place in Copenhagen, where he will be competing for Italy side by side with Luca Angeli, Assistant Bar Manager of the Firenze hotel. “Our staff, run by Bar Manager Massimiliano Prili, is made up of seven members, two of whom are women, adding a touch of female elegance to the bar, - says Angeli, barman of the year 2013 according to AIBES. Ours is a classic and elegant bar, which our customers describe as “warm”, owing also to the staff’s friendly and knowledgeable approach”. Not to mention the top-quality and highly-creative drinks: “Our Old Style Negroni, with China Clementi di Fivizzano and Vallombrosa Gin, is our most popular locally-sourced cocktails.”

Data: domenica 14 dicembre.
a partnership in the name of excellence by foUr seasons…for a precioUs gift, and not only at christmastime!

The Duomo, the Sforzesco Castle, the Scala Theatre and…. Panettone. Milano is known worldwide for a number of attractions, but there is not a shadow of doubt that panettone is the symbol of the city’s exquisite pastry-making tradition. As a tribute to the quintessentially Milanese cake, Four Seasons Hotel and Vergani have joined forces to create a special-edition art panettone. Tradition and creativity come together in Étoile, the panettone with a gourmet heart. Stone-ground wheat germ flour, Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans, cane sugar-candied Sicilian orange rind, top-quality Tuscan acacia honey, unrefined sea salt, Austrialian “5 Corone” raisins and fresh Charentes-Poitou Dop butter. Much like the colors in a painting, the precious ingredients used to make Étoile combine to create a true work of art for the palate, by the well-known confectionery company Vergani. The project was inspired by a work by artist Aldo Rota for Four Seasons, which is shown on the packaging. The alternation of the seasons and cycles of nature are described through natural and floral motifs: solstices and equinoxes alternate, but deep passions never die. Such as the bond that Milano and Panettone share: an evergreen cake to be enjoyed all year round, not only at Christmas. As a matter of fact, this symbol of Milanese excellence, an artisan product by Vergani, will be the star throughout the Expo 2015 period to offer international guests a taste of genuine, local deliciousness.

When asked what his favorite cake is, he has no doubts: a sumptuous cinnamon-scented apple crumble, served with fragrant vanilla sauce, the ideal treat on cold fall and winter afternoons, delicious any time of the year. But when asked what cake he enjoys having prepared for him, he says: chocolate tortino, the one with a soft heart, any chocolate lover’s dream. “Chocolate tortino is good for the spirit- says Luca Musitelli, Four Seasons Hotel Milano’s new Pastry Chef- and sweets, a luxury good, must provide comfort and surprise at the same time. That is why, this year, Four Seasons’ panettone is made by the well-known confectionery company Vergani, with top-quality ingredients, but as faithful to the original aromas and flavours as possible”.Musitelli’s approach to pastry-making is based on plenty of experience. “ I believe that our time requires of us to deliver clear, direct, straightforward messages- explains the Pastry Chef- even in the pastry-making field. Therefore, flavours should not be mixed nor masked, no frills nor fuss, respectful of tradition and yet modern and creative”. Luca Musitelli’s philosophy is the result of his many business trips and knowledge gained working in different environments and with different viewpoints. “The visual appeal of a cake may change according to the context and the circumstances, but the taste has to be clear-cut and convey the story behind it, while offering heart-soothing sensations…”

Una vocazione…al cioccolato
forze nUove in pasticceriathe new addition to the pastry team
cioccolato, quello col cuore morbido, dalle suggestioni infinite…

From Vinci to Florence to Milan……Leonardo, the most versatile artist of all times, has become, once again, the symbol of Italy (and Expo Milano 2015) throughout the world. The Renaissance genius, who perfected his studies of hydraulics and defense systems, but also his painting technique, in Milano is the face of the Universal Exposition, which begins on May 1, 2015 and ends on October 31: six months devoted to culture meant as a space designed to address and answer man’s deepest and truest needs. The theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life sums up the very important issues that the city of Milano promises to explore and debate in accordance with a new concept: thematic, sustainable, technological and focused on visitors, with 130 participating countries and an exhibition space spreading over an area of one million square meters. Expo Milan 2015 is a true “round-the-world tour” through the flavors and traditions of all peoples on Earth and is welcomed as a major contribution to the debate on feeding and food resources on a global scale, as well as a chance for visitors from all over the world to reflect upon and become aware of the consequences of their actions on the

generations to come. Expo Milano 2015 is, in fact, not only seen as the “industrial world’s showcase”, but also and mostly as a step forward in the growth and development of a common unity toward the respect for and protection of the Planet. Man is, once again, placed at the center of this “universe”, with visitors called to be active participants and witnesses of the history of Universal Expositions in the making. The history begins in London in 1851. The 1906 World Fair was held in Milan- it began on April 28- with 200 pavilions placed at the back of the Sforzesco Castle and describing the progress of land and water transportation, while the whole of Europe was eagerly awaiting for the completion of the construction works on the Simplon Tunnel. This time, Milano will be seen as the ambassador of Italian culinary tradition, but also as a strategic and cultural center for national and international tourism, a major economic area, the world capital of fashion and design, a luxury shopping destination, as well as a benchmark in fund-raising initiatives, sports and medicine. And once again, it opens its doors to the world….
