4-H FOOD AND FITNESS ACTIVITIES

The Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness

Youth Leadership team will be coming

together again this week to learn

more about change and how it effects

are lives. “Destination Change Maker”

will be the program focus for this

month. The youth teachers will come

across this issue many times in their

life and in the classroom. This is a

great experience for local youth to

expand their communication and

leadership abilities as well as learn

the science behind the food and

curriculum.

The RYLT consists of two to three high

school FFI members from 17 school

districts in NE Iowa. Riceville and

Crestwood will each take part in the

Leadership team this year.

In November the Cross-Age teachers

had a great test of their skills by

taking squash into the classroom for

the youth to learn about and sample.

The high school teachers found

themselves working a little harder on

the persuasion side with the squash

then they had to with the apples but

it turned out great.

A lot of the youth tried squash for the

first time and many actually liked it.

The elementary students also really

enjoyed digging all of the seeds out of

the squash and learning about all the

different varieties.

These lessons prove to be great

experiences for both the high school

teacher and the elementary youth.

The Riceville 4-H Food and Fitness Team has

been active with the local Northeast Iowa

Food Bank. They group has assisted with

the unloading of food trucks and also held a

Halloween Party at the school and collected

food to donate to the Riceville Food Pantry.

Great job group! Continue to show the 4-H

Spirit!

CLUB RECRUITMENT CONTEST HORSE JUDGING TEAM

This year we decided to have a

become the most active in recruiting

new members. This created some

excitement and competition with a

couple of clubs and we were happy to

see the results. Thank you to

everyone that became active in

recruiting. We have you to thank for

our 38 new members in the Howard

County 4-H family. This count is of

members that are currently enrolled

in our 4-H online system.

We did end in a tie with our contest

so the TWO clubs receiving pizza

parties will be… Space Age Farmers

and the Flying Hoofs. Leaders for

these clubs please contact the

Extension Office.

Emi Frohn and Abby Kennon
