Quincy Area Youth OrchestraAuditions Oct. 8, 2017 The QAYO provides opportunities for tri-state area students to share and combine talents, improve reading and ensemble skills, perform standard orchestral literature, and have fun while creating music. Prospective members must be in grades 7-12 and have at least three years of playing experience. Auditions include playing scales, excerpts and a solo. Quincy Area Youth ChorusAuditions in early December The QAYC provides top-notch vocal training in a fun atmosphere. Singers in grades three through 12 are invited to audition. The QAYC includes girls, and boys with unchanged voices, in two performing groups: The Kinderchor for the younger singers and the Concert Choir for older members. Auditioning children should prepare a song they enjoy singing. For information on any of our groups visit qsoa.org Encore!, the Volunteer Council of the QSOA, provides ongoing support through volunteer and financial assistance. With a strong belief that the adult musicians of tomorrow are the youth musicians of today, Encore! encourages students to pursue their musical talents. In addition to general support of the QSOA, the group makes financial donations to the Quincy Public and Parochial schools’ music programs, sends students to summer music camps, supports the Quincy Area Youth Orchestra and Chorus, and sponsors the Young Artists Concert, Family Concert, and Educational Concerts. Encore! hosts events including Battle for the Baton, the Beat Beethoven 5k Run/Walk, and the Fairy Tale Tea. Over $600,000 has been returned to Quincy and surrounding communities by this volunteer organization! Upcoming events can be found on Encore’s website: www.encorequincy.com. Singers from the area rehearse on Monday evenings and enjoy making beautiful music together. New vocalists are always welcome. Auditions are held in August and December. Seventy years ago, a vibrant collection of local musicians were organized into the Quincy Little Symphony and led by their talented conductor, George Irwin. Those early years became the springboard for our organization which now includes orchestra, chorus, youth orchestra, youth chorus and a volunteer corps. The 70th season concurrently aligns with my 10th anniversary as music director. As we step into a new decade, I welcome returning patrons and new audience members to our ambitious repertoire of favorite masterworks, young soloists, new commissions, grandly scaled productions and more. In October, we present Brahms’ beautiful First Symphony and feature Quincy-native Emily Hart as soloist. Our November Family Concert will bring out the Super Hero in us all as we perform fun and familiar tunes. Our talented Chorus presents a not-to-be- missed Christmas Concert in December. In February, we journey to the Land of the Midnight Sun with two brilliant works by Sibelius. Irish melodies and stories come alive when the chorus presents “The Emerald Isle” on St. Patrick ’s Day. Our April finale is a spectacular collaboration event of or- chestra and chorus. These events give them an up-close introduction to instruments, and often, their first experience with live sym-phonic music. This performance is free and open to the public.

The orchestra shines in a masterful performance of Sibelius’ First Symphony and shares the stage with the Quincy Area Youth Orchestra for the rousing Finlandia. Winners of our Young Artist Competition perform masterworks.

Quincy Symphony Chorus 7:30 pm Sat., March 17 Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with the QSC! “Letters from Ireland” draws on actual texts of letters written from Ireland to America, and weaves them into a fabric of traditional Celtic melodies. This suite is a powerful testament to the first generations of Irish immigrants to America. Don’t miss this unique and fun event!

This spectacular concert opens with a new QSOA-commissioned work by composer Jacob Bancks. It is followed by “Sunrise Mass,” a beautiful collaboration of the Orchestra, Symphony Chorus, Youth Chorus, QU Choir and JWCC Choir. The thrilling finale is the orchestra’s live performance of “The Planets” accompanied by high-definition science films produced specifically for the music. Connecting astronomy, photography, music, and storytelling, this production follows the tempo and tone set by the music, and is intended to inspire audiences and encourage them to learn more about the music and the universe.
