One of the seminal artists of our time, Laurie Anderson’s genre-crossing work combines performance, film, music, installation, writing, photography, and sculpture. Conceived as a series of short mystery plays, Delusion jump-cuts between the everyday and the mythic to tell a complex story about longing, memory, and identity. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are the newest and youngest players in a long lineage of Black String Bands, performing their style of traditional roots music that Rolling Stone described as “dirt-floor-dance electricity.” Rooted by the infectious rhythms of guitar and jug alongside banjo, fiddle, and harmonica, the Carolina Chocolate Drops joyfully revisit the string band and jug band music of the ‘20s and ‘30s as heard on their 2011 Grammy-winning album, Genuine Negro Jig. Known as “the sorcerer” or “the magician,” the music of Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal has appeared on albums by Miles Davis, who called Pascoal “the most impressive musician in the world.” Pascoal’s sextet is an extra-sensory musical unit that has been with him for over ten years and rehearses daily. The music runs from lyrical and romantic to raucous; from folkloric to futuristic, with angular melodies that often create a dense barrage of sound. Continuously inventive, the band employs synthesizers and saxophones as well as a battery of invented instruments—hub caps, teapots, and bowls of rocks—guided by Hermeto’s wizardry and benevolent spirit.

Direct from Mongolia AnDa UnionTuesday, September 27 at 7:30 pm $38/$29/$22 save
The sensational Mongolian folk ensemble AnDa Union is part of a musical movement that finds inspiration in old forgotten songs, drawing on a repertoire of magical tunes that all but disappeared during China’s tumultuous past. Skillfully playing such traditional instruments as the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) and singing in the khoomii style of overtone vocals (similar to the throat singers of Tuva), AnDa Union reveals a world that is largely hidden from view. Drawing on the music of the Mongol tribes that Genghis Khan unified, AnDa Union creates a richly diversified and captivating program with a pounding, percussive pulse at its core.

Flying Karamazov BrothersWednesday, September 28 at 7:30 pm $45/$35/$25 save
“As close to a sure thing as can be found onstage, 90 minutes of cleverness and comedy that go by in a flash!” —New York Times
If you see one group of multi-faceted new-vaudevillians at the apex of their ambidextrous and alliterative ability, make sure you see the Flying Karamazov Brothers too. Fun for all ages, these are not just any wild-haired, juggling, flame-throwing, kilt-and-tutu wearing performers. The four zany brothers deliver visual and verbal one-liners, all while creatively tossing about anything they can get their hands on. At the Flynn, you’re invited to bring objects to the theater for the brothers to keep airborne in a challenge that ends either with a pie in the face or a standing ovation. As director/founder/performer Paul Magid says, “Juggling is dropping.”
