Think of traditional African-American music, and the genres that come to mind are gospel, blues, and jazz; few people think of old-time string band music. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are the newest and youngest players in a long lineage of Black String Bands, performing their style of traditional roots music that Rolling Stone described as “dirt-floor-dance electricity.” Rooted by the infectious rhythms of guitar and jug alongside banjo, fiddle, and harmonica, the Carolina Chocolate Drops joyfully revisit the string band and jug band music of the ‘20s and ‘30s as heard on their 2011 Grammy-winning album, Genuine Negro Jig. Victoire is an indie-classical ensemble founded by rising star composer/keyboardist Missy Mazzoli, recently deemed “one of the more exciting and surprising composers now working in New York” (New York Times) and “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart” (Time Out New York). The group’s sound is composed of Mazzoli’s distinct blend of dreamy post rock, quirky minimalism, and rich romanticism. Victoire plays selections from their debut album Cathedral City—named one of 2010’s best classical albums by the New York Times, Time Out New York, the New Yorker, and NPR—along with a set of Mazzoli’s chamber works for violin and electronics, performed by the composer with violinist Olivia De Prato.
