Enemy

An Enemy of the Peopleby Henrik Ibsenadapted by Nicholas Rudalldirected by Kjetil Bang-HansenAugust 29 to October 22, 2006

Spurred by his maddening experiences with censorship, Ibsen wrote An Enemy ofthe People to depict how society deliberatelyand ruthlessly ostracizes its truth-tellers.When Dr. Stockmann discovers that hiscity’s baths are contaminated, he imme-diately sets out to warn his fellow citizens.Terrified of losing the baths’ tourist dollars, the citizens refuse to accept Dr.Stockmann’s claims. Ibsen captures thecourage of one man fighting the tyrannyof the majority in a play that remainsinescapably modern. Kjetil Bang-Hansenmakes his Shakespeare Theatre Companydebut directing the world premiere of anew adaptation by Nicholas Rudall (TheOedipus Plays and Hedda Gabler). Bang-Hansen is the former artistic director ofDen Nationale Scene, one of Norway’sthree national theatres and where Ibsenserved as writer-in-residence from 1851 to 1857.

Titus

Titus Andronicusby William Shakespearedirected by Gale EdwardsApril 3 to May 20, 2007

For the first time in its history, theShakespeare Theatre Company presentsShakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. Written atthe beginning of Shakespeare’s career, theplay reinvents the revenge tragedies popular in Shakespeare’s day, heapingscenes of bloodshed one on top of the other. When Roman General Titus returns fromhis victorious campaign against the Goths,he sacrifices one of the Goth princes inretaliation, setting in motion a horrificcycle. But amid the violence, Shakespeareprovides scenes of deep humanity, depictingthe anguish and loss felt by Titus, theGoths’ Queen Tamora and their families, while illustrating the futility and humancosts of revenge. In the character of Titus,Shakespeare foreshadowed the great tragicheroism of Brutus and the depths of Lear’sdespair. Director Gale Edwards returns forthe first time since her productions ofRichard III and Hamlet, two of the most suc-cessful and critically acclaimed productionsin the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s history. This production is part of theShakespeare in Washington celebration.

Andronicus

Hamlet

DirectorMichael Kahn reunites with actor JeffreyCarlson for the first time since Lorenzaccio,a production The Washington Post called,“Impressive! Kahn’s smart new staging surrounds Carlson, indisputably theevening’s star.” This production is part ofthe Shakespeare in Washington celebration.
