The promises of God, made to Abraham, for the salvation of hu-

mankind are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ - true God

and true man - is the expected Messiah. The genealogy is present-

ed in a series of three frameworks, each comprising fourteen gen-

erations, which show the progressive development of salvation

history.

Genealogies serve different purposes

To many people the endless

list of names and the endless

repetition is boring. But

these are not words of a

useless genealogy with no

meaning. These are words of

promises fulfilled by God to

His people.

In the Bible, genealogies

serve different purposes.

Genealogies can help to es-

tablish identity. They are also

used to establish status and

legitimacy. Genealogies are

also used to emphasize per-

sonality or character traits.

The genealogy of Jesus

shows God's love for His

people and shows that He is

continually at work in our

world; it shows that His faithful-

ness continues to reach to all generations and His covenant love

goes from parents to children. It shows as well the humanity of

Jesus, and the equality of all Christians.

Both sinners and saints

Through the genealogy, Matthew truly indicates what “the word

became flesh” (John 1) really looks and feels like. Jesus had both

sinners and saints in his own family line and God used each one of

them for His own purpose.

Jesus became a part of a dysfunctional family, and was pleased to

do so.

Women in Christ’s Genealogy

Matthew included five women in the genealogy of Christ. This is

notable since it was not customary for Jews to include women in

their records. Even more remarkable is the fact that some women

had disreputable histories. The history of each of these women

draws attention to an occasion on which God was seen to act out-

side the normal expectations of humankind to carry out His Will.

The five women included were Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba,

and Mary.

The messages of the Gospel

Jesus was the awaited Christ of the Old Testament, the de-

scendant of David, the first King of Israel, and of the off-spring

of Abraham, the founder of Israel as God's people.

In the genealogy of Jesus, we not only see the lineage that con-

nects Jesus to the line of King David, we see a picture of God

working in the midst of a fallen people like us.

Jesus is looking to reshape our lives so that the dysfunctions of

our past and present do not determine how we chose to func-

tion and define our future.

Jesus is truly the friend of sinners who came to call not the

righteous but sinners to repentance.

Thought for the Week

Salvation is extended to all peo-

ple, to the whole human family,

all of whom are descendants of

Adam and Eve, no longer just to

the descendants of Abraham.

Jesus is the new Adam and Mary

is the new Eve. Through Baptism,

we become the new chosen peo-

ple; the elect of the Father.

Through the redemptive merits of

Our Lord Jesus Christ, God ex-

tends His love to the whole hu-

man race. Like the Jews of old, we

are a new chosen people. Jesus'

love for each of us is a particular

and total love.

Chapter six: Some Pastoral Perspectives Preparing engaged couples for marriage

205.The Synod Fathers stated in a number of ways that we need to help young people discover the dignity and beauty of marriage. They should be helped to perceive the attraction of a complete

union that elevates and perfects the social dimension of existence, gives sexuality its deep-est meaning, and benefits children by offering them the best context for their growth and development. 206. “The complexi-ty of today’s society and the challenges

faced by the family require a greater effort on the part of the whole Christian community in prepar-ing those who are about to be married. The im-portance of the virtues needs to be included. Among these, chastity proves invaluable for the genuine growth of love between persons. In this regard, the Synod Fathers agreed on the need to involve the entire community more extensively by stressing the witness of families themselves and by grounding marriage preparation in the process of Christian initiation by bringing out the connection between marriage, baptism and the other sacra-ments. The Fathers also spoke of the need for spe-cific programmes of marriage preparation aimed at giving couples a genuine experience of partici-pation in ecclesial life and a complete introduction to various aspects of family life”.

He gave us not a God to know of, but a God to live with. In Him, God's truth, wisdom, love, work and presence was revealed: "He who saw me saw the Father. “The Father gave His only Son to

the world, and this Son gave His blood and His life to all people, so that they might be justified and saved. He completed the secrets of salvation for every man and became a teacher for everyone and performed the miracles. He preached the poor, forgave sins, revoked the law of the Sabbath, and showed man how he should love God. These are works of salvation because they are divine. "My father works and I work."
