DAVIS | FREIRE | SKELTON

Saturday 3 March | 7.30pm Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Nelson Freire piano Stuart Skelton tenor

Vine Symphony No.1 Microsymphony ∆ Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 Emperor Beethoven Fidelio: Gott! Welch Dunkel hier!Wagner Götterdämmerung: Morgendämmerung and Siegfrieds Rheinfahrt Wagner Die Walküre: Winterstürme wichen dem Wonnemond Verdi Otello: Ballabile Verdi Otello: Niun mi tema

Join us as we celebrate our season opening with two fantastic guest artists. Highlights include Beethoven’s stirring Emperor Concerto, the dungeon scene from Fidelio and Verdi’s amazing nale from Otello. It is extraordinary to have Wagner and Verdi, born in the same year, together on the program. Juxtaposed with these classical icons is Carl Vine’s Microsymphony, a work encompassing the dramatic features one expects from a symphony, compressed into just 12 minutes — intriguing!

The Masters Series

One of the tasks I relish most as MSO's Chief Conductor is planning a season in which all guest artists are matched with repertoire for which they have a special affinity. In this year's

Masters Series I believe I have achieved this goal with particular success.

1 THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS

Thursday 8 March | 7.30pm Saturday 10 March | 2pm

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Catherine Wyn-Rogers mezzo-soprano Stuart Skelton tenor Nathan Berg bass MSO Chorus

Elgar The Dream of Gerontius

I rst heard this work at the age of 14 and it made the deepest impression on me. Though it is a profoundly religious piece, tracing the soul’s progress through death and beyond, it carries a message of ecstatic hope that will move you whatever your beliefs. It’s with great joy that I bring it to the MSO.

2 DEBUSSY AND BRAHMS

Thursday 5 April | 7.30pm

Jun Märkl conductor Christopher Moore violaDavid Berlin celloLadies of the MSO Chorus

Debussy Nocturnes Finsterer Double Concerto ▯ Brahms Symphony No.4

If you ask me which Brahms symphony is my favourite, the answer would probably be the one I’m conducting right now. But I do believe that the Fourth is truly my favourite. It has a grandeur and a sweep to it like no other. Debussy can always be relied upon to paint the most vivid pictures — here clouds, festival celebrations and dangerously alluring sirens!

3 BEETHOVEN’S EROICA

Thursday 10 May | 7.30pm Saturday 12 May | 2pm

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Moye Chen piano

Vine Concerto for Orchestra ∆

Liszt Piano Concerto No.1Beethoven Symphony No.3 Eroica

Beethoven originally dedicated his Heroic Symphony (Eroica is Italian for heroic) to Napoleon but erased his name from the title page when the Corsican revealed his feet were of clay (clearly an Englishman’s perspective!). The symphony was of a scale never before attempted and remains one of the great triumphs in music.

4 THOMAS HAMPSON SINGS MAHLER

Thursday 7 June | 7.30pm

Andrea Molino conductor Thomas Hampson baritone

Mahler Totenfeier Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Messiaen Le Tombeau resplendissant R. Strauss Tod und Verklärung

My friend Thomas Hampson sings Mahler’s beautiful songs of a love-lorn wanderer, Messiaen evokes the glory of stained glass windows, and Strauss, like Elgar, takes us through death to nal transguration. An inspiring evening!

Thursday 15 November | 7.30pm Saturday 17 November | 2pm

Karina Canellakis conductor Mayu Kishima violin ○

Dvořák The Noon Witch Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1 Beethoven Symphony No.5

Beethoven’s Fifth needs no introduction but its originality always astonishes me no matter how many times I hear it. The Noon Witch is one of Dvořák’s too seldom performed tone poems — discovering new pieces by familiar composers is, I think, one of the joys of concert-going. Shostakovich was afraid his violin concerto would o¥end the Soviet authorities and hid it in a drawer for several years. Thank goodness he changed his mind!

7 STRAVINSKY’S FIREBIRD

Thursday 25 October | 7.30pm Saturday 27 October | 2pm

Jukka-Pekka Saraste conductor Dejan Lazić piano

Stravinsky Funeral Song Bartók Piano Concerto No.3 Stravinsky The Firebird

I’m delighted that my esteemed friend Jukka-Pekka Saraste will lead a performance of the complete Firebird ballet. I heard him conduct it a few years ago and my hair stood on end. Bartók's last Piano Concerto is his most tender, and as always, there’s plenty of excitement along the way!

5 SIMONE YOUNG KOLJA BLACHER

Thursday 5 July | 7.30pm Saturday 7 July | 2pm

Simone Young conductor Kolja Blacher violin

Britten Violin Concerto Bruckner Symphony No.6

After her recent triumph with Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony, Simone Young, one of Australia’s most distinguished artists who enjoys the greatest international renown, brings her extraordinary insights to his glorious Sixth. Benjamin Britten’s early Violin Concerto, a piece demanding great virtuosity and expressiveness, is in the best of hands with the ever-popular Kolja Blacher.

1 MAHLER 9

Friday 16 March | 7.30pmSaturday 17 March | 7.30pmMonday 19 March | 6.30pm

Sir Andrew Davis conductor

Mahler Symphony No.9

‘A symphony must be like a world — it must contain everything.’ The Ninth, Mahler’s last complete and most ambiguous symphony, is as much about our fragmenting world, as volatile Europe at the end of Mahler’s life. It can be conducted as a love-song to life, a hymn to death, or both. Whatever path Sir Andrew Davis takes, it will leave you changed, with more questions than answers.

2 TCHAIKOVSKY 5

Friday 13 April | 7.30pm Saturday 14 April | 7.30pm Monday 16 April | 6.30pm

Muhai Tang conductor James Ehnes violin

Brahms Tragic Overture Kernis Violin Concerto ** Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5

Meet Muhai Tang, the charismatic Chinese-born conductor renowned for delivering edge-of-your-seat performances. He is also a fearless new music champion so I predict this Australian premiere by Pulitzer Prize-winning Aaron Jay Kernis will be a white heat experience. Kernis wrote it for James Ehnes’ beautiful, lyrical tone and jaw-dropping virtuoso technique, promising poetry and reworks before you even get to the Tchaikovsky.

3 L’ENFANCE DU CHRIST

Friday 15 June | 7.30pm Saturday 16 June | 7.30pm Monday 18 June | 6.30pm

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Sasha Cooke mezzo-soprano (Marie) Andrew Staples tenor (Le Récitant) Roderick Williams baritone (Joseph) Andrew Goodwin tenor (Centurion) Shane Lowrencev bass (Polydore) Matthew Brook bass (Hérode, Père de famille) MSO Chorus

Berlioz L’Enfance du Christ

Think Berlioz, and badly-behaved witches come to mind (his Symphonie fantastique). So this almost operatic oratorio telling the tale of Christ’s childhood is a bit of a surprise. Tender, luminous, at times intimate, with a touch of the occult in the Soothsayers' inventive dance, the overall atmosphere is one of child-like purity that will move you to the core. And a warning, the nal mystic chorus may bring you to tears.

4 BEETHOVEN AND BRAHMS Friday 20 July | 7.30pm Saturday 21 July | 7.30pm Monday 23 July | 6.30pm

Joshua Weilerstein conductor Jayson Gillham piano

Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3       Brahms/Klengel Intermezzo Op.117 No.1 Brahms Piano Quartet (orchestral version)

What a pairing! Epic Beethoven in the hands of Jayson Gillham, the child prodigy from the Queensland bush, and Joshua Weilerstein who hails from a notable musical dynasty. This noble work with its kaleidoscope of colours and emotions transcends its Mozartian model (the romantic, slow movement is to die for). The magnicent orchestration of Brahms' Piano Quartet with its toe-tapping Hungarian dance nale completes a rich musical menu.

Friday 21 September | 7.30pm Saturday 22 September | 7.30pm Monday 24 September | 6.30pm

Xian Zhang conductor Tianyi Lu conductor ⁰ Benjamin Grosvenor piano

Mills Island Signal Island Song ▯ Schumann Piano Concerto Dvořák Symphony No.9 From the New World

Beijing-born maestro Xian Zhang makes her MSO debut with two romantic masterpieces. Schumann’s only piano concerto explores the extremes of his personality as soloist and orchestra intertwine like the love a¥air between Schumann and Clara Wieck, the concerto’s dedicatee. Dvořák’s nostalgic symphony, with its soulful lament, ends in a blaze of chords with lingering echoes of darker memories.

6 FRENCH CLASSICS

Friday 23 November | 7.30pm Saturday 24 November | 7.30pm Monday 26 November | 6.30pm

Fabien Gabel conductor Beatrice Rana piano Fiona Campbell mezzo-soprano MSO Chorus

Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune Proko§ev Piano Concerto No.3 Debussy/Dean Ariettes Oubliées Ravel Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No.2

All the perfumes of Arabia would fade alongside this fragrant program of exquisite French o¥erings. Fiona Campbell will spin the long, languid lines of Debussy’s Forgotten Songs — the perfect complement to Ravel’s spectacular ballet suite, framing Prokoev’s tempestuous Third Concerto. Expect sparks and sparkle from young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana.

3 BERNSTEIN ON BROADWAY

Saturday 18 August | 7.30pm

Bramwell Tovey conductor, piano Sarah Fox soprano Liane Keegan contralto Michael Petruccelli tenor Brett Polegato baritone

Songs and instrumental excerpts from Wonderful Town, On the Town, Candide, Peter Pan, Fancy Free and West Side Story.

All his life Leonard Bernstein had a love affair with New York and in his many music theatre works he painted the most vivid picture of life in the ‘City that Never Sleeps’.

This season, we celebrate Bernstein’s 100th birthday by looking at different aspects of this great man.

There is Bernstein the composer of symphonic works of vast intellectual and emotional dimensions. The maestro, the powerful advocate of the music of Gustav Mahler, and the continuation of the symphonic tradition.

The man of the theatre who, in his pursuit to write the great American opera, changed Broadway forever. And behind everything there is the educator, who made whole families stay at home to watch the Young People’s Concerts on TV.

The MSO is thrilled to welcome Bramwell Tovey to Melbourne for this celebration. As a young conductor in 1986, he was asked to step in to conduct the opening night of a Bernstein Festival with the London Symphony Orchestra. By doing this, he followed in the footsteps of Leonard Bernstein himself, whose career was launched in the same way. The only difference was that, in Tovey's case, Bernstein himself was present. Subsequently Bernstein invited Tovey to attend classes and rehearsals. The rest is history.

We will tell you Leonard Bernstein’s story and infuse it with his inner passion for music, for people and for a life worth living.

1 DAVIS AND FREIRE EMPEROR CONCERTO

Friday 2 March | 11am

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Nelson Freire piano

Wagner Götterdämmerung: Morgendämmerung and Siegfried’s Rheinfahrt Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 Emperor

I love a good musical sunrise and this one from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung is one of the most magical. I love entering Wagner’s realm of legend, and being carried away by his incredible yearning to the other-worldly. Following this is sure to be a highlight of 2018 — a mature master of the piano interpreting Beethoven’s crowning achievement of concerto writing.

2 ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER TCHAIKOVSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO

Friday 22 June | 11am

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Anne-Sophie Mutter violin

Soloist in Residence

Stravinsky Le baiser de la fée: Divertimento Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

Within the enormous versatility of the MSO, the Russian repertoire feels like a spiritual home to me. It’s such a thrill to be part of the colour and drama of this music, luxuriating in the warmth, the power and the drive of the sound we make. The perfect match of a legendary soloist, with what is probably the most exciting violin concerto ever written, will be thrilling.

Anne-Sophie Mutter supported by Mr Marc Besen AC and Mrs Eva Besen AO

3 STRAVINSKY’S FIREBIRD

Friday 26 October | 11am

Jukka-Pekka Saraste conductor

Stravinsky The Firebird

Playing Stravinsky’s Firebird in a youth orchestra opened my eyes to how fun and truly satisfying playing in an orchestra can be and helped set me on the path to where I am today. Although I have played and heard it many times since, I am each time astonished afresh at the originality of the sounds, and at the extraordinary range of expression Stravinsky draws from the orchestra.

World-class artists, wonderful orchestral repertoire, concerts with commentary from the stage, without interval. Short and sweet indeed.

F. Couperin Concerts Royaux Nos.1-4

Imagine walking through the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles with the scent of spring blossom from the Orangerie wafting in the air… and suddenly the elegant and sophisticated strains of Couperin’s music entertaining the court of Louis XIV fill the room… the stylish sounds of the French Baroque at their very finest.

Proko§ev Overture on Hebrew Themes Hindemith Quartet Dohnányi Sextet

As chamber musicians we are part of a conversation, contributing our individual voice in a sympathetic yet dynamic way. This concert exemplifies this art of dialogue, with unusual combinations of instruments giving voice to three distinct nationalistic styles.

Boccherini Stabat Mater (selection) Vine The Tree of Man ∆ Brahms Sextet No.2

The text of The Tree of Man Cantata seeks to convert the inexpressibility of life into words. Is it possible though that music can express the inexpressible? I truly believe it is! The beautiful repose of Boccherini, the yearning nature of the Vine and the glorious sweep of Brahms encapsulate just how miraculous our world of music is.

Freya Franzen violin Christopher Cartlidge viola Rachael Tobin cello Stephen Newton bass Jack Schiller bassoon Philip Arkinstall clarinet Saul Lewis horn

R. Strauss/Hasenöhrl Till Eulenspiegel (einmal anders) Ravel Duo for violin and cello Beethoven Septet

Beethoven’s Septet is a gleaming diamond of the chamber repertory. Melodious, harmonious and majestic in structure it showcases how masterful Beethoven was at reaching new horizons both in writing for each instrument and for the art of chamber music. Till Eulenspiegel’s jocular nature springs off the pages of this chamber arrangement abounding in sparkling wit and humour, just like a twinkle in the eye.

Wagner Siegfried Idyll Wagner Die Walküre, Act 1

We begin gently with Wagner’s blissful love song to his wife. And then, the evening turns to a erce tale of drama, passion and power. The MSO teams up with acclaimed soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek to bring you Act 1 from the second opera of Wagner’s famous Ring Cycle. A hunted man shelters from the storm, not knowing he has entered the house of his enemy. Ancient custom keeps him safe for the night, but the morning will bring death — until forbidden love turns winter to spring. Powerful and impassioned, Die Walküre grips at every turn.

Beethoven’s Fifth needs no introduction but its originality always astonishes me no matter how many times I hear it. JAMS FOR JUNIORS

Iwaki Auditorium, ABC Southbank Centre

CLASSIC KIDS 1 DAHLESQUE

Saturday 28 April | 10am | 11.30am Malthouse Theatre

Songs and stories from Roald Dahl with Elise McCann

The MSO invites you to explore the fantastical imagination and sardonic world of the irrepressible Roald Dahl, in this gloriumptiously irreverent and magical concert. Starring Elise McCann (2016 Helpmann Award-winner as the Miss Honey in Matilda the Musical) and an astonishingly playful orchestra, you’ll hear music from Dahl's favourite stories including Matilda, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, as well as original compositions of Revolting Rhymes.

CLASSIC KIDS 2 TRIPOD

Saturday 2 June | 2pm Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall

Musical comedy trio

Three men who perform songs and make funnies (sometimes at the same time) and one, charismatic orchestra. Join the MSO and hilarious musical comedy trio Tripod — Scod, Gatesy and Yon — for a seriously silly exploration of all things orchestral, some things symphonic, original songs and divine harmonies.

Guest artists Education Week 2018

CLASSIC KIDS 3 MSO MEETS CIRCUS OZ

Saturday 8 September | 11.30am Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall

Join the MSO as they entwine their music around the acrobatic limbs of Circus Oz in a spectacular fusion of two extraordinary and dramatically different art forms. Be swept up by the power of the live orchestra as Australia’s daredevil stunt masters defy the laws of physics, tickle your funny-bone and push the boundaries of impossibility.

M S O S U P P O R T E R S

For the love of music

Established in 1906 when arts and culture were flourishing in our great city, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra provided the very best in orchestral music.

Since that time, we have brought inspiration and delight to thousands of Melburnians and visitors for over 100 years. This has only been possible through your generous support, year after year. Thank you.

Philanthropic donations are essential to our aim of reaching the apex of the performing arts in our city, our state, and around the world.

Presently, we engage with over 3.4 million people each year through live performances, recordings, television and radio broadcasts, as well as live streaming.

Your ongoing support will bring musical experiences to all — experiences that are relevant and meaningful in our contemporary society — whether it's school children hearing a symphony orchestra for the very first time, or a dazzling performance in a concert hall.

Please consider making a gift on your subscription form in support of the MSO. Each and every gift makes a difference and the collective impact can leverage additional funds for unique projects, or strengthen our reserves to ensure the MSO remains a part of the cultural fabric of this great city for the next 100 years.

Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your generosity.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION Call our Philanthropy Department on (03) 8646 1551.
