“I’m really happy I came upon that program,” Mr. Johnson smiled. “He’s quite a person. Yes, he’s real.”

Viewer Judy Soares also was moved by Dr. Kalauawa’s story. And she found former professional boxer Ralph Aviles “spell-binding” as he described his tough early childhood and his volunteer work today with at-risk youth.

Ms. Soares wrote: “I am a retired teacher who worked at a school where children came from difficult family circumstances. I used to spend many hours worrying about their futures. After seeing your interviews, I was so happy to see the resilience both men displayed.”

“...Both now have a dedication to helping less fortunate people. But they don’t do the helping in a condescending way – they respect the people they are helping. It’s inspirational.”

These Long Story Short guests are not celebrities, but they shine. Their dark times didn’t defeat them. These men quietly illuminate their lives and those of others.

CEO MESSAGE

Leslie Wilcox

PBS Hawai‘iPresident and CEO

It’s happened maybe a dozen times already.Within a min ute of running into someone I

know or meeting someone new, I’m asked about a guest whom I interviewed recently on our weekly Long Story Short program.

“You know, the man from Waikīkī,” said Blake Johnson of Honolulu, shortly after we met at a PBS Hawai‘i film screening. “What a guy! I can’t think of his name.”

Mr. Johnson went on: “You ask yourself, ‘Can he be real?’”

He was referring to Dr. Elliot Kalauawa, Chief Medical Officer at nonprofit Waikiki Health, who matter-of-factly told about growing up in Pālolo public housing. An only child, he didn’t know his father, and at a young age, his single mother left him on his own much of the time, going off to drink and gamble.

There was not the slightest trace of self-pity or bitterness as he related how he would eat dinner alone most evenings and put himself to bed. In the light of morning, he would find his mother sleeping soundly in her bed. Taking care not to awaken her, he would kiss her goodbye before making his way to school.

The future Dr. Kalauawa blamed no one for his circumstances. He knew that his mother loved bars and card games. He also knew that she loved him.

Dr. Elliot Kalauawa, Waikiki Health’s Chief Medical Officer Ralph Aviles, former professional boxer

new episodes, and edited a short online video tie-in for the series, “20 Questions with Ed.”

When reflecting on which family recipe stands out most for him personally, Nakoa points to the ‘awa (kava) his father grows, harvests and prepares. “I’ve watched my dad prepare ‘awa since I was a kid,” he says. “Now that I’m an adult, I realize the importance of learning this art and being able to pass it down to those after me.”

Nakoa says his studies have prepared him for many options after graduation. However, he hopes “to be a part of elevating Hawai‘i’s unique way of storytelling” and wants to help “shed light on the abundance of content that we have here within the communities that we live in.”

Giugni values exposing Hawai‘i’s youth to tools that will help them preserve and perpetuate their communities’ stories. “Internships are pathways to future jobs,” said Giugni.

“We’re thrilled to offer opportunities to students interested in this creative field,” added Family Ingredients Director Ty Sanga, a part-time lecturer at ACM UH Mānoa.

Appealing to both wanderlust and appetites, Family Ingredients returns for a second season. The nationally distributed lifestyle series, based in Hawai‘i and hosted by local restaurateur Ed Kenney, showcases the dishes that have shaped our Islands – and the places, cultures and stories behind them.

“This series is about celebrating our differences and our similarities,” said Heather Haunani Giugni, the Executive Producer behind Family Ingredients.

“It’s about learning, discovering and accepting,” adds Director of Photography Renea Veneri Stewart, who spearheads Rock Salt Media, the local production company that produces this series.

With such local values, Family Ingredients is indeed a Hawai‘i homegrown creation by a talented Hawai‘i crew, a collaboration between Rock Salt Media and nonprofit distributor Pacific Islanders in Communications.

Among the youngest of the local talent who worked on the series is Nakoa Camvel, a University of Hawai‘i at West O‘ahu student in his final year at the Academy for Creative Media (ACM). A former PBS Hawai‘i HIKI NŌ intern, Nakoa most recently interned with the Family Ingredients team. He assisted with paper edits for the

But should we be pointing fingers? As individuals, do we prefer our own version of the truth? And for that matter – is the truth overrated? For those who think there can only be one truth, it’s an outrageous question. A Buffalo Springfield song from the ‘60s could have been ahead of its time by declaring, “Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong.”

In Hawai‘i, more than 90 percent of adults spend time on social media. Most have a selected mix of preferred media outlets and “friends” with whom they enjoy sharing almost everything. This makes for a very comfortable community of engagement. It’s a customized community that we can hold in the palms of our hands.

Is it time for us to come together, face-to-face, and actually listen to each other? Reach out beyond our “friends” and “likes” to try and understand someone else’s truth? Or, at least, can we agree to disagree without completely disrespecting another person’s opinion?

KĀKOU – Hawai‘i’s Town Hall will take on this subject of “truth” by hosting a diverse community of people for some old-school engagement. Face-to-face, civil conversations in real time.

“Kākou” – we’re all in this together.

“Fake News.” “Trolling.” “Social media bubbles.” These are new additions to our society’s vocabulary and are often blamed for the increasing division among us today.

A new season of HIKI NŌ premieres on Thursday, October 12 at 7:30 pm, as the nation’s first statewide student news network enters its seventh consecutive school year on the air.

Teachers began preparations for the new season on August 19 at a statewide HIKI NŌ teachers conference at PBS Hawai‘i. Over 60 educators, many of them new to HIKI NŌ, gathered to learn best practices for mentoring their students through the digital storytelling process.

The conference was akin to the first stop in a year-long concert tour, with the HIKI NŌ teachers as the rock stars. Each of them received an exclusive “HIKI NŌ CAN DO! World Tour” t-shirt and a “backstage pass” laminate, with seven HIKI NŌ story criteria on the flip side. They also received energy shots to keep them going through those 11th-hour editing and uploading sessions with their students. All of this was designed to empower teachers to

take ownership of the HIKI NŌ process and help their students go from “good to great” – the HIKI NŌ mantra.

Speaking of great, the top story in the season premiere episode is a real mind-blower. Created by students at Kaua‘i High School, “The Bigger Picture” shatters the paradigm that all students are slaves to their hand-held devices and experience the world only through their screens. “Put down your phones,” the narrator admonishes, “and cherish what is around you. We are surrounded by some of the most beautiful creations.”

If you think you know all there is to know about Hawai‘i’s young people, HIKI NŌ is bound to challenge your preconceptions. Watch. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

HIKI NŌ ENTERS ITS SEVENTH SCHOOL YEARBy Robert PennybackerExecutive Director, Learning Initiatives

A scene from “The Bigger Picture,” a story from Kaua‘i High School students that encourages us to pull away from our screens and appreciate the world around us.

PARTNER PROFILE

Le Jardin Academy is proud to partner with PBS Hawai‘i, as a fellow nonprofit organization that shares a common mission – to advance learning and discovery. “PBS Hawai‘i is a great example of how it takes connection and

engagement from an entire community to sustain an organization that shapes Hawai‘i’s future,” says D.J. Condon, whose 34-year career in education includes teaching and leadership experience in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Myanmar, the Netherlands and the continental U.S.

Le Jardin Academy is home to more than 800 students who are encouraged to explore, appreciate the arts, and care for the environment and each other. Le Jardin Academy’s approach to learning and living is cultivated from the school’s International Baccalaureate accreditation. The program encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world.“We want everyone in our community, from our youngest pre-school

learners to our high school leaders, to constantly learn and be empowered to pursue his or her own talents, interests, dreams and aspirations,” adds Condon. “It gives me a profound sense of purpose to participate in that journey.”

Mahalo a nui loa to Le Jardin Academy for its support of PBS Hawai‘i. If you or someone you know would like to be a program sponsor, please contact PBS Hawai‘i’s Director of Business Support, Patty Doo, at [email protected] or call 808.462.5048.
