85 seasons ago, a visionary group of citizens planted the seed of a great idea in Montreal. Shortly thereafter, the Société des concerts symphoniques de Montréal gave one of its first concerts under the baton of founding Artistic Director Wilfrid Pelletier, initiating a musical tradition that thrives to this day.
85 years represents a lifetime: a full generation in the human scope of things. For the OSM, this anniversary is our chance to reflect on the history of concert life in Montreal – how past generations have defined us, and how we wish to shape the next.
Since our beginnings, concert repertoire has been the bedrock of our tradition. We return to great works again and again because they offer something new with each hearing, while reinforcing who we are through practice,
of the great French composer’s death. Works by Ravel, Dukas and Debussy appear throughout the year in recognition of their significance to the OSM and their special place in the concert life of our city.
As a second line, the OSM explores several sacred choral masterworks attesting to the importance of ritual in our lives, especially that of a spiritual nature. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor stands as a monument to the combined power of music and faith, while Mozart’s great Requiem expresses the beauty, fear and anger in the human confrontation with death and the afterlife. Handel’s Messiah returns to the OSM in December, reviving a holiday tradition of celebrating rebirth and salvation through music.
Over the years, the family of great artists who regularly join us on stage continues to grow. This season we welcome many new guest conductors to our podium, including David Afkham, Alain Altinoglu, Karina Canellakis, Christoph Eschenbach, Pablo Heras-Casado, Paul McCreesh, Hervé Niquet, Rafael Payare, François-Xavier Roth and Michael Tilson Thomas, while we have the pleasure to welcome back conductors James Feddeck, Bernard Labadie, David Robertson, Juraj Valčuha and Nikolaj Znaider. Our list of guest soloists is no less illustrious, featuring pianists Rudolf Buchbinder, Bertrand Chamayou, Jean-Philippe Collard, Till Fellner, André Laplante, Charles Richard-Hamelin, Alexandre Tharaud and Daniil Trifonov; violinists Veronika Eberle and Julian Rachlin; cellists Truls Mørk and Edgar Moreau, and singers Karina Gauvin, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Julian Prégardien. Our recital series features some of the world’s most sought-after soloists: Jean-Philippe Collard, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Evgeny Kissin and Leif Ove Andsnes.
Over our history of more than 40 major tours, the OSM has served as cultural ambassador for Montreal and Quebec to the world. This year we embark on two major touring projects. In the spring, we return to the great capitals of Europe, including Vienna, Paris, Berlin and Brussels, with pianists Rafał Blechacz and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, in programmes that can be heard at the Maison symphonique before the Orchestra departs overseas. Meanwhile, we will undertake another tour, this time of northern Quebec and Nunavik in collaboration with six communities, including Kuujjuarapik, Uashat mak Mani-Utenam, Mashteuiatsh and Oujé-Bougoumou, performing a programme featuring local artists.
This season we continue our young tradition of delving into the musical worlds of single composers over the period of a week. Our Brahms and the Art of Film week in February matches Brahms’ four great symphonies over four concerts with silent films, each one associated with a different season, and presented alongside newly commissioned works by Canadian and international composers. In March we pursue our immersion in the music of Brahms with a performance of the German Requiem under the leadership of OSM chorus master Andrew Megill. Over another four concerts in April, Encounters with Mozart offers a window into the work of this most cosmopolitan of composers, who through his constant travels was one of the first to assimilate a truly pan-European style. Mozart’s kaleidoscopic examination of the many facets of the human spirit often ultimately presents us with a window into ourselves.
The Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique, already a fixture in Montreal, celebrates its fifth anniversary with appearances by artists including Isabelle Demers, Thierry Escaich, Jean-Willy Kunz and Olivier Latry, in a variety of concerts ranging from grand solo recitals to an evening of improv games in collaboration with professional actors, as well as a special concert in May marking this early milestone anniversary. We continue our exploration of the silent film through live musical screenings of Nosferatu (1922) with organ, City Lights (1931) and The Artist (2011) with orchestra and conductors Timothy Brock and Dina Gilbert, respectively. And, back by popular demand, Fred Pellerin returns to the OSM during the holiday period to present a new and highly anticipated conte de noël staged by director René Richard Cyr.
Throughout our programming, we strive to honour a unique sense of place and culture through the depth of the repertoire. Tradition is the foundation and the basis of a common language that the OSM has shared with all Montrealers over a lifetime. It is our great privilege to continue this tradition with you, may it nourish us for many years to come.
repetition and ritual. As in literature, architecture and the visual arts, our grounding in what we know allows us to venture forth and innovate within a world that can often seem incomprehensible, volatile and capricious.
Framing our season this year are a number of works expressing the roots of our musical culture in Montreal. We open with Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Ravel’s Boléro, paired with the world premiere of a new chamber opera co-created by Canadian composer Matthew Ricketts and Cree-Canadian author Tomson Highway, to be performed in Cree, Innu and Inuktitut languages in recognition of the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of our shared home territory. Our season closes with Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique coupled with the rarely heard musical drama Lélio, with actor Lambert Wilson, in honour of the 150th anniversary

Kent Nagano sets the Maison symphonique ablaze with The Rite of Spring, which has become one of the OSM’s signature classics. This program, soon to be taken on tour internationally, also includes Debussy’s Jeux and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, which the composer counted among his greatest accomplishments.
This concert, directed by Kent Nagano, covers a rich and eclectic assortment of times and places. After dance suites by Ravel and Bach (including Bach’s Suite in D major, one of the best-known works in the repertoire), the Orchestra turns to South America, with Ginastera’s notoriously virtuosic Violin Concerto and Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5.

Rafał Blechacz returns to the OSM with Mozart's Concerto no. 23, one of his most famous piano concertos. Alongside works by the master of Viennese classicism, this concert features Claude Vivier’s Siddhartha, inspired by Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same name, in which a young man embarks on a spiritual journey in search of enlightenment.
The OSM once again brings French and Russian music into the limelight. The French music, however, looks abroad – Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso paints a suave and colourful portrait of Spain, while Saint-Saëns’ Fifth Piano Concerto is tinged with inflections of Arabic music. The unstoppable energy of Petrushka provides the finale for this electrifying program.
Brahms’ great German Requiem – profound, majestic, and moving – has touched countless hearts over the years. Here presented with organ accompaniment, the German Requiem was a long labour of love for Brahms, undertaken in honour of his mother, his mentor Robert Schumann, and all that is sacred in humanity.

Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov returns to Montreal to perform Rachmaninoff’s famous Third Piano Concerto – a captivating introduction to Romantic piano music, or an invitation to fall in love with it all over again. This concert marks the debut of conductor Karina Canellakis with the OSM.
Louis Lortie appears at the Maison symphonique once again, this time with Franck’s Symphonic Variations, one of the composer’s most enduring classics. Next comes Mahler’s fascinating Seventh Symphony, which heralded the end of German Romanticism.
The OSM offers a rare opportunity to hear Henri Dutilleux’s virtuosic Cello Concerto, with outstanding French cellist Edgar Moreau as soloist. The Concerto was originally composed for the great Rostropovich in the late 1960s – nearly a century after Tchaikovsky composed the exquisite melodies of his First Symphony, “Winter Daydreams.”

Berlioz, Lélio ou Le retour à la vie, op. 14b Berlioz, Symphonie fantastique, op. 14
The OSM devotes its final concert of the season to French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), pairing the Symphonie fantastique – one of the major classics of the orchestral
repertoire – with the lyric monodrama Lélio. Together, these autobiographical works form the two-part “Épisode dans la vie d’un artiste” (Episode in the Life of an Artist): Lélio
was originally composed as a sequel to the Symphonie fantastique, although joint performances of the two are now rare. This vibrant homage to Berlioz marks the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death, and features French actor Lambert Wilson in the
role of Lélio.

Les Cowboys Fringants Michel Pagliaro Long Live La Môme: The Symphonic Piaf After nine albums, twelve Félix Awards and an
extraordinary two-decade career, Quebec folk rock group Les Cowboys Fringants steps into the spotlight at the Maison symphonique. Known for their incisive lyrics and irresistible groove, the band will perform a number of their greatest hits in concert with the OSM.
Legendary Quebec singer-songwriter-guitarist Michel Pagliaro boasts an exceptional career of 45 years and counting. This year, in his first collaboration with the OSM, he will perform his classic songs in never-before-heard orchestral versions. Experience the music of the famous Pag with an all-new OSM twist!
Edith Piaf’s songs never go out of style. The OSM and several outstanding voices from Quebec pay tribute to “La Môme” by putting a symphonic spin on several of her most beloved classics.
