EUROPE IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON SOYA IMPORTS

• High dependency on imports

• Negative impact on sustainability

• Economic disadvantages

EUFRAS Annual Conference, Lisbon 2019

3

IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT

Imported Soya -> Regional Soya

reduce 50% of CO2 emission

(~1.1 mio. tons CO2 / year) by avoiding Land-

use change (LULUC)

EUFRAS Annual Conference, Lisbon 2019

4

IMBALANCED SYSTEM

Crop sector dominated by grains /

lacks high-protein legumes

Livestock sector low protein self-sufficiency

rate /

dependence on soya import

BENEFITS OF MORE SOY/LEGUMES IN EUROPE

• More soya means better crop rotation, rebalancing share of grain legumes on arable land

• In Europe: << 5%

• In South-America: 40-70%

• Less/no use of fertilizer

• Nitrogen fertilisers are not needed since most of our farmers use inoculant products

• P/K fertilisers are usually not used, if not indicated by soil tests

• Increase of soil organic matter by production of legumes and pulses / improving soilquality

OPPORTUNITIES

1. Soybean cultivation

• Soybean suits very well into SEE cropping systems, possibilities to increase areas

• >10 adapted breeding programmes in Europe and international varieties for Europe

• Production technology is available

• Suitable for low-input production system, technology available (low pressure from pest and diseases)

2. Market

• Growing market segments (regional, organic, non gmo, veggie..)

• Non-GM premia (80-120 Euro/t)

• Strategically important for a protein self-sufficiency of the European food sector

EUFRAS Annual Conference, Lisbon 2019

CHALLENGES

1. Soybean cultivation

• New crop for many producers in Europe –low level of knowledge

• Crop management: Inoculation, fertilisation, weed managment-resistant weeds

• Availability of seeds in quality and quantity

• GMO contamination (Ukraine, Moldova, Romania)

• Lack of R&D for non gmo soya (10% Non GMO soya in total worlds soybean production)

• Variable quality/proteins (eg. Serbia 38% , Russia 30%...) and yields

2. Market

• 85% of animal origin food in Europe originated from gm feeding-not labelled!!!

• Voluntary non-GM standards and labels boosts non gmo livestock feeding but still not in all EU countries

• Often non gmo local soya mixed with imported gm= same price, same quality

• SEE almost self-sufficient in local non gm soya but main non gm market in WE (transport challenges)

• insufficient processing facilities hinders local use in some countries

• Kick-off meeting, MoU signed in Vienna, Sept 2018

• Regional Conference, Ilok, Dec 2018

• Main goal: increase productivity and sustainability of NON GMO soybeans in SEE

• Key measure: Development and implementation of efficient and innovative knowledge transfer from science to practice/farmers

• Specific goals:

• Increase availability of best practices of soybean/legumes production in Europe

• Develop best practices in different production conditions through network of demo fields accross Europe

• Ensure skilled and competent advisory service for sustainble non gmo soybean/legumes production

• Build knowledge advisory platform for sustainable, non GMO soybean production

• Improve knowledge in soybean production among farmers throughout Europe

• Develop value-added chains and increased of competitiveness of soybeans from SEE.

SEASN/DS COOPERATION

Page 22: SEASN-DONAU SOJA PARTNERSHIP - EUFRAS
