Seasides Past and Present This term our topic is ‘Beside the seaside’. Lesson 3 focuses on ‘Seasides past and present’

Task 1: This task will need to be done with an adults help. Can you research some of our seaside resorts in our country, the United Kingdom. How many countries are there in the UK? What are they called? What are the capital cities? Has you visited any seaside towns/resorts in these countries?

Have a look at the map of the UK seaside resorts on the image below:

Which is the nearest seaside resort to you? Discuss which direction you would travel to reach the coast. Discuss each country in turn with the children, naming the main seaside towns in each country and looking at the location on the coast. Ask: Which seaside towns can be found in Wales? England? Scotland? Northern Ireland?

Task 2: Seasides past and present: Holidays have been taken for a long time in the UK and all over the world. What are seaside resorts like today? What activities can people do at these places? Modern seaside towns:

Past seaside towns:

Seaside holidays back then were very different. Most Victorians would go to a British seaside, such as Blackpool because flying to another country wasn’t an option. They believed that the seaside air was good for you. Some beaches were divided for men and women. Sunbathing wasn’t in fashion back then, so the Victorians would go to the beach fully clothed. ‘Sea bathing’ was done instead. Beaches were a lot cleaner back then as there weren’t as many packaged foods and snacks.
