Challenge

• 5 years of data taken with AMANDA

• Up to now:– no extraterrestric signal found– most interesting hint:

from coincidence analysis with HEGRA

The Sky in TeV-Light 2003 This plot could have

been made by telescopes

of a sensitivity of 1 single

HEGRA telescope

AMANDA

From the analysis of 1ES1959+650 we have learned, that by coincident observations a singificant background (time) reduction (factor 10-100) becomes possible.

GRB-analysis-like situation

Proposal

• Build (1–5) Atmopheric Cherenkov Telescopes, each roughly of the sensitivity of one of the old HEGRA telescopes.

• Set them up at locations of existing ACTs (northern hemisphere preferred).

• Operate them together with ACT collaborations.

Page 10: Search for Neutrinos from Strong Variable Gamma Ray Sources

What about HESS, MAGIC, VERITAS ?

• Possible: – (I) ACT looks on hotspots of the AMANDA/IceCube skymap

– (II) IceCube adds confirmed ACT sources to its search catalogue

• However:– New ACTs are very sensitive

• CRAB visible within minutes

• Long term observation of intense AGN not interesting

– New ACTs are optimized for low (< 1TeV) energies

will be done

Telescope locations

• Ontime is ~ 10%,

• weather conditions -> different locations

• MAGIC, VERITAS, HESS?, India???, ????– Telescopes could be operated by existing crews

• Observations around the clock possible

Telescope properties

• Mirror: 14 – 15 m2 – 5000 € / m2 ~ 75000 €

• Mount:– 75000 €

• Camera: 127 pixel, lightguide• Electronic within a box outside, container• Sum: 0,5 – 1 M€ / telescope• 1 – 6 telescopes needed (1,1*2,2*3, stereoscopic)• Help from MAGIC offered• Independend interest from HESS

Cheap alternatives?

• Where are the old HEGRA telescopes?

• 1 mount is still at La Palma, electronics might be found, camera might still be in Heidelberg, could work again within 4 months.

• 3 (?) Telescopes were handed over to US (BD), for high altitude tests.– Convince her to set them up at the VERITAS site?

Conclusion

• With comparably moderate expenses in terms of money and manpower, a significant improvement of the sensitvity can be reached.
